Photo - Helen Tatchell By Kate Taylor Construction has begun on Australias first co-located fire station and community fire refuge, in Blackwood. The $1.5 million building will be fire resistant. Blackwood is surrounded by native bush and mountain ranges - surroundings which also put Blackwood high on the CFAs list of 52 high bushfire risk locations. The State government was unable to find a location for a Neighbourhood Safer Place in Blackwood and with only one road in and one road out; the new facility is much needed, said Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Pat Toohey. An event marking the start of construction was attended by Minister for Bushfire Response Kim Wells, Victorian Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley, CFA Grampians Area Regional Director Don Kelly, Blackwood Brigade Captain Ian Stewart, Mayor Toohey and Council CEO Rob Croxford, former councillor and current Bacchus Marsh fire brigade and CFA board member Michael Tudball and Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell. The existing Blackwood Fire Station was opened in 1987, and the upgrade were commencing today aims to not only provide last-resort protection, but improve the operational capability of the Blackwood Fire Brigade to respond to, and manage, major fire and other emergencies in the area, Minister Wells said last Wednesday. He said it is the first time a CFA fire station will be built incorporating the latest designs and specifications to qualify it as a Community Fire Refuge, with funding of $1.5 million. A Community Fire Refuge is designed to be a last-resort option for communities and individuals who find they have no other survival options in a significant bushfire. However, construction works must be complete and the operating procedures tested before the upgraded station is ever designated for use as a refuge. Mayor Pat Toohey said he was extremely pleased Council has worked closely with the State Government, CFA and the Blackwood community. We thank the government for their initiative for making sure this is a state-of the-art facility to protect our community going forward. Brigade Captain Ian Stewart welcomed the new station and refuge. Its a good thing for the future and for the people of Blackwood. Its a thing thats never been built in the world, so weve got to try it all out. The site is anticipated to be completed later this year, however stringent testing will be conducted before it is opened for use.

Historical remembrance

Its nearly 100 years since young Moorabool soldiers were farewelled from the Mechanics institute, boarded a train and left among cheers and a rousing community rendition of the national anthem. They were off to serve their country in World War I and while next year 2014, will see the start of commemorations, next week will see an awareness day held in Bacchus Marsh planned by a local group called the Great War Centenary Committee. The Great War Centenary Committee are like minded volunteers who are working towards the centenary of Australias - in particular Bacchus Marshs - involvement in WWI, said Bacchus Marsh Historical Society and Great War Centenary Committee member Chris Bronchinetti. The Awareness Day is to increase community awareness that the Great War Centenary Committee plan to celebrate commemorations 2014- 2018 with particular attention on the centenary of the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour in August 2018. She explained that the local community helped with the war effort - several horses were donated to the government by locals, as well as a supply of flannel to make uniforms for the soldiers. The Patriotic Guild also asked for donations for sheets for the Field Hospitals, as noted in the Bacchus Marsh Express Newspaper, November 28 1914. On Awareness Day Saturday 10 August - 2013 we will have people in uniform, memorabilia, school art displays, and key note speakers. The event is one of three awareness days taking place in Victorian towns, and involves Moorabool Shire Council, the National Trust, the local RSL and many local schools. It will be held at the Bacchus Marsh RSL Hall from 10am.

Another road death

A man died in a collision between two vehicles in Bacchus Marsh last week. The incident occurred at approximately 7am last Thursday 1 August on the Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road within the town. Although investigations are still continuing, Police believe that one vehicle veered onto the wrong side of the road and into the path of the other. The male driver of one vehicle was declared deceased at the scene, while the male driver of the other vehicle was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. There were no passengers in either vehicle. Bacchus Marsh CFA attended the scene and provided fire suppressant to ensure neither vehicle caught fire.

Candidate fined $1000

A MOORABOOL COUNCIL candidate has been fined $1000 for not handing in a form. Lawry Borgelt failed to declare he had received zero campaign donations in the 2012 race for East Moorabool ward - in which he finished last. Im disenfranchised with the democratic process, the Bacchus Marsh father-offour said. Every lawyer I spoke to before I went to Court said they had never come across anything like this before. I get the feeling I was made an example of. Under the Local Government Act, candidates have 40 days after the election to lodge a form listing all campaign donations worth more than $500 each. Mr Borgelt said he did not fill out his form initially because with no donations at all, he believed it was unnecessary. I got a reminder notice at the end of January. I filled out that form, but made the fatal mistake of not delivering it. That was the week I got married and three of my kids started school. According to the Magistrate at Bacchus Marsh I had a good excuse and she reduced the fine to $1000. The maximum could have been $8500. She accepted there was no malice involved. I pleaded guilty. The former Mowbray College teacher said for a candidate with no campaign donations, the election had cost him dearly. $1000 is still a lot of money. Ive agreed to pay it off in installments. You know if you drive less than 10km over the speed limit on your mobile, the fine is only $250. The median fine for possession of heroin in 2007-08 was $300 and thats if they got fined at all. Often people caught with drugs get two cautions first. Mr Borgelt said what he did was not endangering lives and his punishment seemed disproportionate to the crime. This is not the way to encourage people to stand for Council. I had to take a day off work to go to court and I now have a summary offence against my name. The main thing is, I can still continue teaching. To add insult to injury, Mr Borgelt also received a notice from the VEC for allegedly not voting. How can they say I didnt vote when I was standing as a candidate and I was voting for myself!? Mr Borgelt was able to avoid the $72 fine after producing evidence he had posted his ballot material. Moorabool Council elections are entirely postal and do not use booths or polling stations. Of the six candidates in the East Moorabool ward last year, Mr Borgelt gained 12 per cent of the vote or 1179 first preferences.

MYRNIONG HAS KICKED up its heels and painted the town green. Local landowners, students and gourmet chefs have hosted a five-hour tour of the hilltop hamlet for a Sustainability Victoria judge involved in the Keep Australia Beautiful awards. Pentland Hills Landcare Group president Anthony Dufty said he was contacted in April about entering events such as the local community tree planting day. I believe the township of Myrniong was equally deserving of recognition and after reading the award description, many aspects of the town seemed to match up with the categories, he said. So we nominated seven entries for the landcare group and three for the
town. As a result of the broad entries, Myrniong became eligible for the Victorian Tidy Town Award section. Mr Dufty said locals spent many hours preparing including slashing and mowing roadsides, removing rubbish, gardening and more. Even the Anglican church path was concreted just in time. Moorabool Council organized to repair the culverts entering the CFA and mechanics hall carpark. Laying bitumen and spreading crushed rock to repair the surface. As a result, the tour was a breeze. Mr Dufty and Emma Muir hosted the judge, while 18 people from Council and the community gathered at The Plough Inn to describe
their activities. The judge was suitably impressed in the level of work the town has undertaken and the close relationship clearly evident between Council and the community, Mr Dufty said. If Marks cooking at The Plough Inn wasnt the trump card, then Myrniong PS was. Cam Crilley was great, talking about the sustainability features of the school and the kids involvement in the learning environment of the school and beyond. ** Regional winners will be announced during August and September, while the State winners will be named in Wycheproof mid-October.

Six community groups in Moorabool will share in more than $6000 funding. The Commonwealth Governments Volunteer Grants Program provided a total of $6,315, which is aimed at helping volunteers meet the costs of running a not-for-profit organisation. The Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre Community Consortium applied for and received $5,000 for a photocopier, the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club applied for $2,055 for an overhead projector and screen and a digital camera, while the Ballan Anglers Club received $1,500 for a generator and to pay for fuel used by volunteers in the course of their work. The Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club received $1,200 for a printer/ fax/scanner and an urn, the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Country Womens Association received $1,700 for a first aid kit, printer/fax/scanner, laptop, a microwave and other kitchen equipment, and St Johns Ambulance in Bacchus Marsh received $4,700 for a defibrillator unit, oxygen response unit, patient carry chair and first aid kit.

Friends of the Moorabool and Central Highlands Water have officially opened a new rotunda at the Moorabool Reservoir. To celebrate the opening, as well as National Schools Tree Day, students from St Marys Primary School at Clarkes Hill planted trees and plants at the Park, including around the rotunda. The new rotunda at the reservoir park is aimed at enhancing the gardens and providing a beautiful setting for weddings, picnics or just a walk in the Park. AFTER 40 years of hard yakka, Stuart Bowers (pictured) is hanging up his shovel and putting away the pen. He is retiring from a Local Government career that took him from an outdoor job at the Shire of Buninyong in 1972, to supervisor work at Bungaree in 1986 and then a position as a Contracts Officer at Moorabool after council mergers during the Kennett era. And it all happened without moving too far at all. Mr Bowers has spent his entire life in Yendon and still lives just 200m from where he was born. Ive got a lot of jobs to do around the house now. Id like to do some travel as well. Im sure my daughter will also have a long list of things for me to do, he said last Wednesday, his final day on the job. Its been a good job because I got to work outside a bit and on top of checking contracts, I also had to go and check sites and see that the contractors were doing things up to standard. There was quite a bit of variety. Mr Bowers said the biggest changes over his 40 years were in the mid-1990s when Compulsory Competitive Tendering was introduced.
I dont want to get political, but a lot of good people were lost in that process, he said. It shows that you get what you pay for when you put things out for tender. Mr Bowers said he had been fortunate to work in
Local Government. Its been varied but I look back and I think this was the best direction. I have also been fortunate to have a supportive family. With any job in life, you only get out what you put in.

Myki rollout, Moorabool ignored

GRAB A MYKI if - and where - you can. Moorabool appears to have been ripped off when it comes to retail outlets for the new card-based ticketing system. If you are one of the shires thousands of commuters and you cannot get to a railway station during staffed hours, youll only have two places to buy a green plastic card to top up your credit and theyre both within a kilometre of each other. Bacchus Marsh 7-Eleven and Bacchus Marsh Newsagency both in Main St are the only Moorabool sites listed on www.ptv. vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/ myki-retail-outlets The news is frustrating for users of the station in Ballan, which is only staffed part-time and has no alternative retail outlet. Ballarat on the other hand has 10 shops where you can pick up Myki and some are in suburbs such as Sebastopol, Buninyong and Alfredton, which have no train service. Metropolitan Melbourne has almost 800 outlets. The story is worse on the Bendigo line, with

An election date of Saturday 14 September was originally set by former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and the new election date of one week earlier was announced by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd last Sunday afternoon. The new date means that technically the referendum to be held on including local government within the constitution can no longer take place. Member for Ballarat Catherine King voted earlier this year in favour of holding the

ONE OF BALLANs oldest commercial landmarks could soon look a little different. The owner of the 153-yearold Ballan Hotel on the corner of Inglis and Fisken streets has applied for a permit to carry out building works associated with accommodation. Joseph McFall has lodged plans with Moorabool Council to add an extra 28 sq m room with an ensuite with its own timber balcony facing Fisken Street. The documents state the plans are for overnight selfcontained accommodation. If approved, it would give the hotel a total of eleven bedrooms all of them on the second storey. The landmark pub was built in 1860 by George Flack and was a Cobb and Co changing station for many years. In recent years the premises has been known as Mamas Bistro.

The revelation comes after Myki was formally launched along the Ballarat line on July 24. One-way and return paper tickets can still be used until further notice, but periodical paper tickets such as monthlies will be discontinued from September 23. Once purchased, Myki
cards must be topped up at machines placed at railway stations, some tram stops or retail outlets. They can also be topped up online or via telephone. Infrequent train users should still purchase a card, but top it up shortly before travelling. People need to touch on and touch off when they use public transport. Travelers forgetting to use Myki readers will have a default amount deducted from their card.

Forum presents rural message

Moorabool farmers have formed a Rural Advisory Committee, dedicated to steering the future of farming in the shire. Close to 40 people attended the Future of Farming in Moorabool forum, held in Ballan, including farmers from nearly every corner of the shire. Guest speakers included Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell, East Ward Councillor Dave Edwards and Victorian Farmers Federation CEO Graeme Ford. Liberal candidate for the seat of Ballarat John Fitzgibbon and Council CEO Rob Croxford attended but did not speak. Third generation Balliang East farmer Eric Sharkey outlined his familys history in farming, and said
there have been many groups set up across the state which are concerned about the future of farming in their areas. He called for reform on rates because the cost has become crippling to farmers. Farming still has a future in Moorabool - it is profitable, it is dynamic. We need to come to an agreeable end. Mr Ford said that for 30 years the VFF has been carrying the voices of farmers to government and agreed that the rating system impacts on agriculture, and that reform is needed. Farmers want a fairer system. Every shire should have a differential rate costing, and there needs to be more funding from the federal govern-
ment for infrastructure like roads, bridges etc, he said. Ballark farmer John Molesworth said in 1975 there were four people in the council office and 30 working on the roads. In 2013 there are about 130 in the office and still 30 working on the roads! Event organiser Kate Sharkey, speaking as a farmers wife, said that all she wants is fairness and equality. We need to take a step back, take a simple approach. We need to work out what we want and work toward it. We just want to be heard, we want to be respected. We want to stay. We have to get results if not, we do have to pack up and go. The only group that doesnt have a union is
the farmer. We are always having to compromise. Its our livelihood theyre playing with - its about time we stood up and got a fair go, she said. She explained that the advisory committee is all about gathering information, better understanding the needs of local farmers, and presenting the rural point of view to council as well as lobbying hard for councils support to have the state government reform the rates system. Broadacre cropping, dairy, horticulture, all of the different facets that make up the agriculture sector in the shire, were going to get a feel from them about their concerns and ideas and give feedback to the council. If we can better inform the council, then when it
comes to decision making and policy making then the council might take into account the agriculture sector. In some ways; there are obviously some parts of our sector that are beyond council. We need results - we cant just keep having meetings and forums and whinge sessions. Other issues explored on the night included the high cost of the fire levy for farmers, the lack of roadside weed control being provided, and calling for help from the Peri Urban lobby group of councils. Fifth generation Ballark farmer James Molesworth suggested locking up parcels of good farming land. Werribee had the best market gardens and land than Bacchus Marsh, now that is all housing.
Cr Tatchell said that a combination of ideas is needed. We need a common sense approach. In years gone by, smaller councils were run by people on the land. People made good decisions. But with the current political agenda, and bureaucracy, wants and needs become confused, he said. Cr a Tatchell unanimous then vote led to
form the Rural Advisory Committee. In closing, councillors and council work for you. We need to get the relationship back in order and get the balance right. Both Cr Tatchell and Ms Sharkey are members of the committee.
Its not a new fire levy, its a fairer fire levy.

On 1 July 2013, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the Victorian Government is replacing the old fire services levy with a fairer system. Rather than being added to insurance premiums, the levy will now be collected with council rates. This means all property owners contribute a fair share to the Country Fire Authority or the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The levy is a fixed charge of $100 for residential properties and $200 for non-residential properties, plus a variable charge based on the propertys capital improved value. All funds will go towards supporting Victorias fire services. GST and stamp duty charged on the old levy have been removed and, for the first time, eligible pensioners and veterans will receive a $50 concession. These reforms will save households and business around $100 million a year.

News Who owns Elaine church?

THE CATHOLIC Archdiocese of Melbourne has refused to comment on whether the sale of the St Patricks Church in Elaine has stalled. Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne communications director James OFarrell said the church did not comment on the progress of the execution of contracts. The church was sold to an unnamed person at auction in May. Controversy was caused when it was believed that the church had been bought by self-proclaimed Bishop Roderick Gow to run as a worship centre. The church stated then that, under the terms of the contract entered into with the purchaser of the property, the property could not be used for worship or other activities promoted or defined as Roman Catholic or Catholic without the express ecclesiastical approval of the Roman Catholic Church. On Sunday 18 August from 10am-4am, anyone interested is invited to visit the site and watch some very talented people at work. Its a textile exhibition; weve got ladies coming to do all sorts of things. Weve got ladies on the loom, weve got ladies quilting, ladies embroidering, crocheting, knitting, weaving, spinning - you name it and anything to do with textiles, well have it going, said one of the event organisers Marjorie Goodchild. Well just keep our fingers crossed that its not too cold. A focal point of the event will be an antique, white, hand-embroidered tablecloth which the group is desperately trying to identify. We dont know its history; the lady passed away and it was given to us with no providence with it at all. We have worked out that its definitely a commemorative piece for the First World War if anybody could help us identify it we dont even know the name of the lady that died, or if she is a local. Its a complete mystery and we are hoping that someone could come along and identify it. Its obviously been done by a group, and I really do think it was done by a group of ladies waiting for their men to come back. Attending the event is free, however donations are gratefully received.

Dear Editor, To the ladies commenting on the little girl being bitten by her grandparents dog. l went through a situation the same when my 2 year old daughter was attacked by our dog in our backyard. Luckily she is ok, but the animal was put down within an hour after the attack. A decision we had no hesitation in making. And if the grandparents of this child are upset; yes l can understand it is devastating, but the dog in question should be put down as it WILL do this again, or it should be in a restricted area that the children cannot get to. I do not think you are being fair on people that have to report the news. If the child in question had to have medical assistance for her injury, then the doctors have to report this to the police. And the grandparents with this dog should think of their granddaughter with the affects it has on her with nightmares, and being afraid of dogs in question, for later in her life. Personally the dog should be put down, end of story, and all up, when an animal attacks someone it is a reportable offence. An example of this may be: once the child is educated and leaves home, savings due to reduced running costs on the new car, the mortgage reaches its end, or you get an annual pay increase in line with expenditure. A family can work a deficit provided there is a sustainable plan to account for the deficit; either by a reduction in spending or an increase in revenue, sometimes both. If the family budget is compromised by either the revenue coming in, or the expenditure going out, it creates a balloon that runs the risk of owing more than you own, which will eventually lead to a dramatic reconciliation of the family balance sheet; or you will simply go broke! A balloon is a compounding debt that results from an accumulation of subsidiary costs associated with and including, initial deficit. The family balance sheet is believe, its simply a case of setting expenditure in line with revenue. We all live within budgets, and whilst Government budgets work with a lot more zeros the principles are the same. For example, say a family has an annual income of $100,000; if the family sets its budget to spend $110,000 it will show a deficit of $10,000 plus interest; whilst on the surface it may appear to be an irresponsible budgeting strategy there can be a number of factors that determine the decision. Educating a teenager, the car may need replacing, the house may need repairs or it could be as simple as a family holiday. These could be temporary factors that affect the family budget, where subsequent budgets will account for the deficit either through a projected increase in revenue, or a reduction in expenses to account for the liability. about what is owned by the family. If the family balance sheet is used to offset debt, the asset base needs to increase in value as at the same rate as the costs associated to the debt, combined with an increase in revenue. In simple terms there are items within the balance sheet that depreciate in value, and items that increase in value; the costs associated to the debt are subject to the perceived risk. The higher the risk, the higher the cost! In terms of Government debt, its the same basic principle, albeit without a balance sheet mentality; its simply about revenue. Governments dont make money. Their revenue is driven by the growth of business and the prosperity of the people. Government revenue relies on business making a profit, and people having a job. You dont pay tax un-

The returning to surplus pitch is misleading. Some people make the assumption that returning to surplus in a budget means returning an overall economy to surplus. In order to get a handle on what returning a budget to surplus means you need to take the premise to the lowest common denominator. Budgets are nowhere near as complicated as the politicians would lead us to
less you make money. If an economy slows, you either stimulate the economy to encourage growth, or reduce spending to take pressure off business so that it can be more profitable. Increasing costs to business reduces profitability, which inevitably leads to higher unemployment and a decrease in revenue to the Government. If the stimulation doesnt lead to sustainability in the economy, and the unemployment rate rises, not only does a Government have a reduction in revenue, but Government expenditure also rises. One swallow doesnt make a summer; you cant reduce a countrys deficit simply by bringing an annual surplus into surplus. You need to have a succession of surpluses at the same yearly rates as when you went into deficit plus the on-costs. The paradox in todays economy is that we have enjoyed a decade of unprec-
edented growth combined with low unemployment yet, despite the numbers, our debt increases at $100 million per day. Put simply, Governments are living beyond their means. You cant borrow your way out of debt; you either need to increase the Government revenue by taxes and charges, reduce the expenditure in line with the revenue, or sell off assets to reduce the debt; the peoples balance sheet! The next Government has two choices: Be unpopular, or be irresponsible; there is no third option! We dont, or at least our political trajectory on both sides shows little sign of understanding. The NSW State government has recently given another stark example of this. Leasing Newcastle as a coal port for 100 years is totally disconnected from climate change reality. And so it goes on. Writer C : So accountants and finance institutions are able to acknowledge climate science and its full implications but not governments! In Victoria we are about to embark on publicly funded road infrastructure costing $8 billion that will almost certainly entrench car dependence and therefore higher fossil fuel use further, instead of viable, possibly less expensive public mass transit options that will reduce it. We have a Federal Opposition that intends to refuse to fund any urban rail options by Infrastructure Australia at all if they are returned to government. We need our politicians to declare whether they stand with the financial sector or with the road lobby on this critical environmental issue. The comments above were in response to an article by Greg Foyster (freelance journalist who has written for The Age, The Big Issue, Crikey and New Matilda. He is an alumnus of Centre for Sustainability Leadership and the author of the forthcoming book Changing Gears (Affirm Press, released September 2013) who wrote, The term climate alarmist is usually reserved for high-profile activists, scientists or politicians think Bill McKibben, Tim Flannery or Al Gore who raise concerns about the catastrophic impacts of future global warming. But with the release of some frightening reports over the last 12 months, those who deny the scientific consensus on climate change will have to expand their list of alarmists to include some unlikely suspects the World Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the International Energy Agency. As climate change heats up, heat must be turned down

Some correspondence on climate change (with thanks to Eureka Street journal - July 30, Vol 23 No 15)) Writer A: I ask climate change deniers if they have read the reports from the World Bank, NASA, CSIRO, UN, IPCC, etc, and the response is always: why would I read those, theyre all part of the conspiracy! It just boggles the mind to think that these people are convinced every government on Earth and millions of people are part of this giant conspiracy. Writer B: Hopefully, the IEA, World Bank and PWC will be even harder to ignore. As an older scientist who sees what is happening all too clearly, I grieve for those who follow us. Denial of the seriousness of climate change is far worse foreword by Dr Jim Yong Kim, president of World Bank Group. Although the global community has agreed to keep temperature rise under two degrees, the report argues that present emission trends put the world plausibly on a path toward 4C warming within the century. The summary closes with these words: The projected 4C warming simply must not be allowed to occur the heat must be turned down. Only early, cooperative, international actions can make that happen. PricewaterhouseCoopers - November 2012 report titled Too Late for Two Degrees? Low Carbon Economy Index 2012. Its foreword is unequivocally alarming: Now one thing is clear: businesses, governments and communities across the world need to plan for a warming world not just 2C, but 4C, or even 6C. International Energy Agency - Successive editions of this report have shown that the climate goal of limiting warming to 2C is becoming more difficult and more costly with each year that passes, reads the summary of World Energy Outlook 2012. Under the IEAs scenario to reach this two-degree target, almost four-fifths of the CO2 emissions allowable by 2035 are already locked-in by existing power plants, factories, buildings, etc. We have five years to begin a massive transition towards low-emissions electricity generation. Why not tell your local politicians about these reports?

VOLUNTEERS planted 5500 indigenous plants when Grow West celebrated its 10th anniversary with a Community Planting Day hosted by Conservation Volunteers Australia at its property in Myers Road, Myrniong late last month. The 30-hectare property is an important habitat link to the W. James Whyte Island Reserve and Werribee Gorge State Park. It forms a buffer to the State Park, protecting Werribee River and Myrniong Creek. Port Phillip & Westernport Catchment Authority Management environmental projects coordinator Helena Lindorff said the total of seedlings planted at the Reserve was now 200,000 since works started in 2007. For the past 10 years, Grow West has been helping local landholders restore the landscape, achieving more than 1000 hectares and 1 million trees of landscape rejuvenation.

2013 Leading Goal Kicker - Madalyn Clarke (Bacchus Marsh) A BACCHUS MARSH woman has kicked her way into footballing history. Madalyn Clarke, 18, took out the Youth Girls Goalkicking Award at the Ballarat Football Leagues Youth Girls presentation night on August 1. With 40-goals to her credit, the teenager has kicked more footies between the big sticks this season than any other girl in BFL history. According to the league, Madalyn booted 3.25 goals per game and topped off the season kicking 12 goals in the final round earning her the top goal-scorer title that week. Madalyn has had an outstanding year of football, BFL Media Manager Shaun Kelly said. Madalyns ability enabled her selection in both interleague sides for the year. She is top-age this year (18) and wed hope she continues her footballing career. Her next nearest rival was Redans Amy McDonald with just 32 goals followed by Ballarats Abby Cummins on 23. Madalyn was named in the 2013 Team of the Year alongside fellow Bacchus
2013 Rising Star - Amy Walker (Bacchus Marsh) Even when she was injured, she turned up to watch her teammates train. She always listens to the coaching staff and will ask for advice on how to improve her game. At Darley, Abbi Bolt was also praised for her commitment and evolving skills. Mr Kelly said she played for four years with the boys in the RDFL before spending a year with Bacchus Marsh at age 11 in the BFL and then heading north of the freeway. Abbi tries her hardest and trains like she plays on game day: courageous and with plenty of skill. She is one of the most accountable players at Darley and is also the youngest. She is Darleys leading goalkicker and her dream in life is to turn her passion for football into a career. The Youth Girls Grand Final will be held on August 10 in Sebastopol between two Ballarat-based teams. Girls must be of secondary school age to play in the competition and rules are modified slightly from regular football.

Marsh footballer Alan Marshall, 18, and Darley players Danielle Menzies, 17, and Crystal Layton, 16. Almost 300 people attended the presentation at Ballarat Lodge, which also saw Madalyns father Robert named Administrator of the Year after his first season as combined girls coach and co-ordinator at Bacchus Marsh JFNC. Hes managed the roles with poise and assurance, never missing a single training session, even while suffering from the flu, Mr Kelly said. With the assistance of their support crew, Robert and his team have produced a fantastic group of footballers. The night also saw Rising Star Awards go to Amy Walker of Bacchus Marsh and Abbi Bolt for Darley. Mr Kelly said 16-year-old Amy was a first-year footballer who quickly embraced the club ethos. Her skills have allowed her to be moved around the ground and she has filled many roles within the team structure, he said. She attends most if not all the training sessions.
State Cross Country Championships

25 BMLAC athletes travelled to Lardner Park, Warragul, to participate in the LA Vic State Cross Country Championships. The first event of the meet, the Boys Under 13, saw BMLACs Andrew Amor produce a gutsy run over the 3km distance to cross the line in 2nd place and take the State Silver medal. Team mates Dominic Miesen, 7th, and Max Closter, 14th, ran extremely well and enabled the Boys Under 13 team to claim the Gold team medal. Lucas Shugg ran a strong race in the Under 14 3km event also claiming a State Silver medal. Hayden Thompson, 10th, and Matt Horan, 17th, supported Lucas well to win the Silver team medal on a countback from Doncaster. Bacchus Marsh Basketball

The club has competed in a recent tournament at the Sandringham Basketball Club, with success. The annual regional challenge championship consisted of the best teams in age groups from Under 12 to Under 18, boys and girls, playing for the David Hickmont trophy. The local Bacchus Marsh U14 team, in their first season together, were drawn to play Kilsyth 3, a team that boasted a 13 - 0 record so far this season. The girls were extremely nervous and started the game as the underdogs; they soon relaxed into the game and proved way too strong for Kilsyth winning 50 to 33. Coach Danny Foxwell said he couldnt have been more proud. The way this group of girls have come together this season is amazing. Caitlin Spence received the Most Valuable Player for the game.

Under 15s Open By Phil Yates Bacchus Marsh U15s had a bit of payback for last weeks 2 nil defeat at the hands of Buninyong Red, with an impressive 2-1 win at Masons lane in the return match. The Scorpions took the game to the visitors from the first whistle with Dane Birch making a sweeping run down the right, with Declan McDonald inching the crossed ball just wide. He made amends for this 5 minutes later, weaving past the defence to slot the ball sweetly into the bottom corner. Buninyong came back with a quick ball over the top to expose a hole in the defence making the scores all square
at half time. Second half, the Scorpions came out gunning for the win with a display of passing and movement that was a joy to watch as Jeremy Cinel slipped his marker and shot a goal that the keeper could only watch hit the back of the net. Man of the Match, Jonathan Forrest, was solid in his defence, with good ball control and calmness under pressure. Under 13s By Frank Catlin Bacchus Marsh Scorpions were back at Masons Lane to play the North United Blacks last Sunday. The Scorpions showed improved teamwork, positioning and passing, but were no match for the high-
ly skilled Norths. Jason McEgan in goals for the first half made a number of good saves but couldnt stem the tide of North attacks. One save rebounded into play and the Norths forward line made no mistake putting it into the net. Ketan Wilken made some important intercepts in defense and Atto Vivave was also providing excellent assistance in both defense and attack.
In the second half the Scorpions defended bravely against repeated attacks, and tried their best to press forward into the opposition half. Leon Shvartser made several good saves in the second half, and saw a number of shots whistle over the crossbar. Late in the game Atto Vivave chased back and stopped an almost certain goal.

13&Under B Ballan combined well as team, moving the ball through the court with strong attacking moves and direct passing. Accurate shooting saw the girls continue to build their lead while one on one defence saw the girls get plenty of intercepts. Ballan 14 defeated Springbank 1. Awards - Ellie Burquest, Emma-Jayne Golding. 13&Under Ballan almost caused a big upset, the girls just running out of time with the game ending in a 19 all draw. 15&Under Ballan were unable to stay with Springbank on the scoreboard despite having plenty of the ball. Springbank 30 defeated Ballan 11.

Two weeks ago the Blues experienced snow at Newlyn and last Saturday the conditions were even more challenging. Icy with a strong northerly wind. The Senior Blues went into the contest as clear underdogs and the Tigers needed this win to lock in a finals appearance. All the Blues players contributed. Kitchen managed to bag two goals and the relentless pressure from the Blues backline frustrated the Tigers offensive moves. In the last half only 1 goal was scored. Marcus Darley played in front and kept a steady hand in defence. Whilst the Blues caused an upset, they take on Skipton at home next week who had an impressive win over Daylesford. Final Score - Ballan 2 5 17 def Springbank 1 5 11 Best - R Watts , M Williams D Neilsen, R Aquilina, J Dorning, A Kitchen The Reserves took on one of the top teams in the competition at home and were under the pump from the start. Bernard Whelan tried his best to replicate his goal kicking spree of last week but the conditions made it difficult to repeat and he could only manage three goals. Brent Shaw relished the trying conditions and Jason Bongart had a sticky
pair of hands in the slippery conditions. The Blues were certainly not disgraced and gave their all till the final siren blew. The Blues now sit just outside the eight and need clear wins over these last two rounds. The Blues had as much of the action in the middle but the Tigers had several strong forwards who were able to convert at key times but the Blues were not so fortunate up forward. Michael Snaith continues to be a key contributor and was a relentless competitor in the middle. Tom McGregor put in an exceptional performance and made the most of his opportunities up forward. Dylan and Charlie were not disgraced in the backline and steady on their feet. at the goals. The Blues captain put in an outstanding effort all over the ground and he was ably assisted by Lachlan Conlan and Snaith, who managed to master the icy conditions. Harry Hauke relished the tough body on body contests. The Blues were trailing into the final quarter but came home strongly and were certainly in control of the game but the clock beat them. Two rounds remain and every game will be essential for a finals berth. The clubs Tinies section of 24 girls, seven coaches and supporters made the trip to Bonbeach for their first chance to perform on stage last Saturday. The girls each performed four items: Free Exercises, Rods, Character Dance and Action Song. The club has two Tinies teams this year - the Red Fairies and the Silver Stars and an age range of 3yrs - 7yrs. Principal coach Gayle Stewart said the girls all looked gorgeous in their costumes and had lots of fun getting ready and performing under the lights. For their efforts they were awarded the following places: 3rd-Character Dance, Honourable Mention - Free Exercises and Action Song, Highly Commended - Rods. The Seniors also travelled to Frankston to compete in their first competition for the 2013 season. In a large and very even division, the team placed well and received high praise for their comedic Calisthenics Revue. Coach Kate Bennett said she was pleased with the standard of the teams performance.

Pentlands team of Sub Juniors made the trip to Bonbeach to kick off their competition season. It was a mixed comp which meant the girls were competing against some clubs from a higher division. Coach Jodie Lightowler said the sub juniors performed solidly and were awarded places in every item.
