I chose a bold, iconic photo approach to illustrate a
complex subject about excesses in the environmen-
tal NFP world. The book was featured on the NY-
Times web site. I added to the package by designing
custom endpapers in Illustrator that were made up
of a subtle pattern of dollar signs.
In spring 2006, Christine MacDonald left journal-
ism for a dream job at Conservation International,
one of the worlds largest environmental organi-
zations. Soon after she reported to the groups
Washington ofces, it became all too apparent
to her that something is rotten in todays clubby,
well-upholstered world of conservationists.
Green, Inc. is a riveting rst-person account
of an eco-warriors travails at the crossroads of

color-corrected them and gave them treatments in Photoshop. I found the
Georgia (top right) lighthouse image on Flickr and did heavy cloning work in
Photoshop to extend the left side of the picture three inches.

Teyre out there every day, fashing through your yard on the wing or perch-
ing, inquisitive, in a tree above you while you putter in your garden or enjoy
a cool drink on your patio. Tey collect on the utility wires above your apart-
ment or suddenly congregate around puddles on your front walk.
Winter locks your yard in an icy stasis, but still the birds arrivegathering
to huddle in a shrub, taking refuge just inside a hole in your shed, or poking
through tree litter scattered on the snows frosty surface. One morning, as the
days grow longer before the cold relents, youre awakened by the clear glissando
of a northern cardinal, the frst herald of approaching spring.
Birds telegraph the change of seasons, they clear last years berries of of your
bushes and reduce the number of grubs in your lawn, and they brighten your
mornings with their song. Tey already share your backyard and your neighbor-
hood with you, but you havent formally invited themover for dinner.
Luckily, its never too late to do so.
Why do more than sixty-eight million people in America watch birds? Per-
haps its the birds seemingly infnite diversity in limitless combinationsthe
remarkable variety of sizes, colors, songs, and behavior patterns we can observe.
Once we look beyond the sooty pigeons at the bus station or the starlings soaring
in synchronized focks over congested highways, the diversity of this family of
the animal kingdom is staggering. In North America alone, we can count more
than 950 bird species that either breed in the United States (sans Hawaii) and
Canada, or put in regular appearances around the continents fringes as they drift
over fromfaraway shores.
Dedicated backyard birders in nearly every state and province can tell you
that over the course of a year, you might see more than seventy diferent species
in your own yardfromhawks, geese, and gulls passing overhead to many vari-
eties of sparrows, fnches, and other small birds at your feeders and in your shrubs
and trees. If youre fortunate enough to live on the edge of a pond or lake, in a
farming community, or near a desertor if you have a large property with many
treesyour backyard visitors may expand to number more than one hundred
diferent species.

If youre feeding more seed and suet to squirrels than to your birds, youre not
alonevirtually every backyard birder faces the squirrel dilemma.
Squirrels remarkable fexibility, their ability to hang upside down by their
back feet while feeding, and their amazing prowess in leaping from trees to
feedersand not getting hurt if they miss and hit the groundall contribute
to their success. All of these skills also prevent us from foiling them for long.
To compound the problem, squirrels can climb smooth objects like poles,
balance on a wire or other slim avenue, and keep their footing on slick surfaces.
If they were not such nuisances at our bird feeding stations, we might be forced
to admire and revere these talented animals.
Tats why many manufacturers have invested large amounts of time and
money in research and development, just to help backyard birders keep the squir-
rels out of their birds food.
Te result is a parade of products that can turn your squirrel probleminto a
source of endless amusement.
FEEdERs THAT WORk
Spend an afternoon watching how your squirrels gain access to your feeders.
Do they jump up froma spot below the feeder? Do they walk the edge of your
neighbors fence and hop over to a feeder nearby? Or do they climb up through
a shrub thats close to the feeder? Te more you know about the access path,
the more likely it is you can solve the problem, often without any outlay of
funds. Here are feeder options that will work if you are looking to foil your
neighborhood squirrels. Weve tried many of these solutions, and some of them
do indeed do the job.
Trick Feeders
Trick feeders come in all shapes and sizes and in all price ranges. A popular
option is a feeder with a spinning bottomthat sends the squirrel fying when he
applies his weight to the perch. Most birding specialty stores carry this feeder,
which has a built-in rechargeable battery. No outdoor cord is required, but

Dont use wooden bird feeders! Squirrels chew through these
in a matter of hours, emptying them of their seed. Instead,
choose feeders made of hard plastic and/or metal, durable
materials that resist squirrels industrious teeth.

every so often. Once the squir-
rels learn that they cant get to the
food, they will back of.
Another option is a feeder
with spring-loaded perches. Tis
trick feeder (shown here) can hold
the weight of small birds. When
a squirrel puts its weight on the
perch, however, it gives way and the
squirrel slips to the ground. Squir-
rels lean quickly, so once theyve
determined the seed is out of reach,
they will lose interest.
Weight-activated feeders
A weight-activated feeder holds nearly ten pounds of seeds, but its perch bal-
ances delicately as if it were part of an old-fashioned scale. When more than
two small birds land on the perch, it rocks down and closes of the seed dis-

construction and sensitive perch mechanism keep them from accessing any of
the seed. Be sure to place this feeder a good distance from branches or other
feeders, so the squirrel cant keep its weight on another perch while trying to
get past this one.
A second option is a little mesh feeder, a perfect addition to a small garden,
which has a built-in spring that
responds to weight. Two or three
birds can use the perches and feast
on the seed inside, but squirrels
are too heavy. When they try to
climb on, the mesh lowers and
shuts of the feeders holes. Squir-
rels cant even climb on top and
reach down the feeder, as this will
close the feeder holes.

Create your own baffes and deterrents out of
materials you may have around the house:
Wrap the feeder pole with metal fashing, which prevents squir-
rels from gaining a foothold as they climb.
If your feeder hangs from a clothesline or other line across your
yard, thread the chain or line through a series of plastic tubes,
cans, or other cylinders from one end to the other. When the
squirrel walks across on the way to the feeder, the tubes will
spin, dumping the squirrel on the ground.
Make your feeder pole out of PVC pipe. Squirrels cant get solid
footing on PVC material.

Defeating the wily squirrel has become a hobby of its own, a high-spirited
struggle between humans and nature. Te wide-ranging list of solutions
involves various kinds of nontoxic chemicals, odor agents, alternate seed com-
binations, and even the old-fashioned catch-and-releaseall of which provide
the fun of watching squirrel behavior as they experience one product or process
after another.
Manufacturers now ofer many products at outdoor recreation, farm and
feed, and garden stores, with an even more inspired selection online (search
squirrel deterrents). Most backyard birders try these products sequentially, see-
ing what works and using another solution to augment whatever success the frst
one ofers.
How efective are all of these products? As in all felds of endeavor, some
solutions may prove very efective in one region of the country or against a par-
ticular squirrel species, while others may have no discernable efect at all.
Red pepper is a natural chemical in chile peppers called capsaicin, which
gives peppers their spicy heat. Squirrels appear to hate seed or suet coated with
capsaicinat least until they get used to it. Treated seed and suet are generally
a little more expensive than food that does not contain the hot chemical. Birds
in South America eat so many chile peppers that some species are called bird
peppers. It stands to reason that the birds will not be put of by capsaicin-treated
food, although these products receive mixed reviews frombackyard birders.
Other possible deterrents include a cloth bag or sock flled with mothballs,
placed in the path to feeders, rags soaked with ammonia, placed near feeders,
coyote urine (available in bottles), organic squirrel repellents, available at garden

an equation for y, it is in slope-intercept form. Using this form can help
you graph an equation. It gives you a good deal of information.

Guides is one of the leading outdoor recreation publishers in the country.
For the campaign on the left I turned the web site into a rock-like structure
in Photoshop. For the more recent campaign on the right I went with a more
stylized approach to draw in readers.

The ad above was a black and white ad I created that ran in the 2007
Country Music Awards program which was distributed at the televised
event. The ad promoted the coffee table book, Nashville Portraits. I de-
signed it in an understated manner to complement the book and appeal
to the target audience of country music fans looking for holiday gifts.
The poster on the right was a template I designed that could be modi-
fed for the Off the Beaten Path series and customized for each state. I
conducted photo research and then I conceived of the photo treatment
to complement the subject matter and draw in the book-buying con-

Using only the in-ight barfbag and this invaluable
manual, you can create any number of paper ying
machines. Dont worry about running out of raw
material, either your neighbors, impressed by your
skills, are certain to rush to get their own barfbags

Shaping Your Barfbag
Airlines have been slow to see the alternative
possibilities in the standard barfbag format, so you
will have to tailor your material to create the perfect
origami square or rectangle. You wont be able to
use scissors to cut the paper, so practice folding and
tearing cleanly along the folds. To ensure your paper
shape is even, fold it corner to corner as shown in
illustration one, then tear off the surplus, as in 2 & 3.

I designed this high-visibility course catalog for Pearson to use in
California, their largest adoption market. Taking a visual cue from the stylized
green waves that were in place in some of the programs existing PowerPoint
materials, I expanded on the look and designed complementary artwork and
page layouts to give the program a cohesive look. I limited the color scheme to
add impact to the message.

a classic, understated system that would not compete with the book,
which I also designed.
For How to Live in the Woods (right) I went with a more stylized
approach to complement the books cover and appeal to corporate
book buyers from Barnes & Noble and Borders.

I created a series of Lambda back-lit trade show displays for Falcon
Guides to use during the 2007 Outdoor World conference held in Salt
Lake City, Utah. On the left is one of the displays. I chose a bold, simple,
grid set-up for maximum impact at the crowded trade show. I used Fal-
cons branded Pantone 123 C and various photos from their books to
convey the brand. Above is Falcon author Kathleen Brown signing books
in front of the display.

Assistant Professor of History at The Johns Hopkins University
Professor Paquette will discuss the
rebellions, revolts, and political
conspiracies that nearly tore Brazil
apart after it gained independence in
1822particularly the Confederation
of the Equator (1824), the Mal Revolt
(1835), the Cabanagem (183536), and
the Praieira Revolt (184849). Among
the questions he will ask, and answer,
are: What did the rebels want? Why
did they fail? What were the long-term
consequences for Brazil, for South
America, and for the Atlantic World?
Professor Paquette graduated from
Wesleyan as a history major in 1999.
While fnishing his PhD at the University
of Cambridge, he returned to Wesleyan
as a visiting instructor in history and
a tutor in the CSS.

Trained as a linguistic anthropologist, Professor Millers research
focuses on cultures of contemporary Muslim reform in the Middle
East and especially in Yemen. His frst book, The Moral Resonance of
Arab Media: Audiocassette Poetry and Culture in Yemen, explores how
Yemenis have used traditional poetry and new media technologies to
envision a productive relationship between tribalism and progressive
Muslim reform. His current book focuses on the trajectory of Bin
Ladens leadership and al-Qaida as fgured through an archive of
more than 1,500 audiocassettes formerly deposited in his house in
Qandahar, Afghanistan.

3. Save the document as 37DEMO_xx.
4. In the memo heading, replace the sample text Your Name and Todays Date with the appropriate informa- tion.

This is an interview I conducted
with MIT Media Lab Professor
Michael Hawley upon his publication
of the worlds largest book, Growing
Up Bhutan.

In 2001, Hawley founded Friendly Planet, a nonprofit com-
pany dedicated to children's education in developing coun-
tries. Friendly Planet is now producing a series of photo
books about what it's like to grow up in some of the world's
most extraordinary cultures. Recently, the company pub-
lished its first book, entitled Growing Up Bhutan. This is
how the book is described on the Friendly Planet website:
At over 130 pounds and 5 x 7 feet, Guinness World
Records acknowledges Friendly Planet's Bhutan as
the world's largest published book. But it's less like a
book and more like an entire gallery show of enor-
mous prints, packaged in an immense yet browseable
volume. The subject is the remarkable kingdom of
Bhutanthe grandeur of its gorgeous scenery, the
wonderfully warmhearted people there, and the
serenity and specialness that make Bhutan so unique.
Copies of the books are being sold for $10,000 with prof-
its going to aid the Friendly Planet charities. The book is
being produced and bound locally by Acme Bookbinding of
Charlestown, MAthe oldest bookbinder in the world.
"The book is a masterpiece," says Paul Parisi, president of
Acme. "It's a little like having an incredible larger-than-life
art gallery in one volume. So crafting the binding to match
that level of beauty became a labor of love for us."
Dr. Hawley chatted with Pages recently while he was in
Tokyo on a promotional tour for Growing Up Bhutan.

Pages: With all the forms of media at your disposal, how did you
settle on the traditional, albeit on a revolutionary large-
scale, form of the book?
Dr. Hawley: I love books, personally, and we always had in mind the
idea of creating a series of books that both helped to show
what it is like to grow up in one of the world's extraordi-
nary cultures, and helped to raise funds to support schools
and scholars in those places. Little books can't do both very
effectively. The big book, as fanciful and impractical-seem-
ing as it is, actually is both sensible and effective.
First, we can charge a lot for it, but it doesn't cost that much
to make, so it really can raise good money. Second, it cap-
tures real attentionthere's an undeniable "wow" when a
new person first encounters it; everyone smiles (the thing is
so absurdly big that it makes you feel like a two-year-old
again) and then enjoys browsing it more deeply.
And third, it's actually quite practical. There is hardly an art
gallery anywhere here in Tokyo (where I currently am) that
can display imagery that totals about 5 x 400 feet of surface
area. But the whole gallery of giant-sized images fits neatly
on one 5 x 7 easel. The cost of framing or mounting even
one 5 x 7 print might be $2500. But in our package, the
images average out to less than $100 each, a bargain, actu-
ally, although the whole thing adds up to an epic.
