SAP Overview:

Sap is generally termed as SAP R/3. This R/3 means Release 3rd SAP has various versions and current version is 6.0 From the version 4.7 it is also called as mySAP. The main advantage of this was connectivity with internet to logon on SAP From Version 4.7 it is also called as ECC which means Enterprise Central Components ECC is a set of basic modules like Finance (FI), Materials Management (MM), Production Planning (PP), Sales & Distribution (SD), Quality Management (QM) etc. SAP is written on ABAP programming language SAP Version can be checked from any system by following menu path system Status SAP has two functions, Functional and Technical Technical includes the ABAP Programmers and Basis consultants. Basis takes care of Server administration Functional are the consultant who study the business process and configure the system accordingly. Ex. FI, MM, PP, SD, QM etc. ECC is a basic set of SAP We can have some add-ons on this system and group of these add-ons is called as Business Suite. For ex. These include Business Intelligence (BI) for detailed reporting, Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) for vendors and employees for web based procurements etc. SAP has also Industry specific solutions and these are termed as IS. Examples are IS Oil, IS Retail, IS Pharma etc

SAP Architecture

Sap Has 3 layer architecture, Presentation, Application and Database Presentation layer is the one, which sends request and received the data from server and presents it in frontend Application layer process the request and here the ABAP code gets executed Database layer has all the database tables and data for the requests is retrieved from here

System Landscape
There are various Servers in a single SAP system Servers in SAP system are called as Instance and the overall structure how these are placed is called as system landscape. Sandbox is a server which is not connected to any other server and is used freely to do trials in SAP. Any change in this system does not affect any other system. Then for the regular development work, there are Development and Quality systems. Any customizing or programming changes in SAP are recorded and these set is called as Transport Request These request are transported from one system to another and these changes automatically get copied to new system First the changes are done in development, tested and then these are transported to Quality and then finally transported to production server Production is a live system and all the day to day transactions are processed in this system

Sandbox Server An independent server

Development Server

Quality Server

Production Server

Transport Request

Concept of Client: For simplicity client can be considered as partitions in server

Client is mentioned at the time of logon to SAP Every client has set of independent data tables and we can see the data only in the client in which we are and can not see the data in other client Client is mentioned at the time of logon to SAP system

Projects in SAP
In SAP there are various kinds of projects as Implementation Support Roll Outs Upgrade Implementation Project In implementation, old system which is replaced by SAP is called as Legacy system. Phases in SAP Implementation Project are As Is Preparation In this phase, business processes are identified and documented To Be Preparation In this phase, how the business processes will be mapped in SAP are documented and signed by client. Realization In this phase, SAP system is configured as per the agreed design Testing There are two stages in this. Unit testing in which only individual transactions are tested like PO create only. Then after this there will be Integration testing in which the entire process is tested by all modules. Like same document no. processed and transferred to other modules for further processing. Once the testing is over, then cutover activities will start. This activity is to decide what data to be transferred to SAP and data collection and loading to SAP. Ex. All material master data, open purchase orders etc. Go Live Once the testing and cutover is over then the system will go live and the consultants will have transitional support till the system stabilizes. Support Project This is the project to resolve day to day issues in SAP. This is an on going activity. Roll Outs This is the project where SAP is implemented and some other area is to be included in SAP. Template is ready and the same can be copied to the new locations. Upgrade This is a project client decides to upgrade the SAP version. Ex. From version 4.7 to 6.0 In this all the customization is ready and in the old version and transferred to the new system.
