SYMBOLS GRAIN LINE Place on straight grain of fabric parallel to selvage ADJUST IF NEEDED Make adjustments before placing pattern on fabric. TO LENGTHEN: Cut pattern between lengthen or shorten lines. Spread pattern evenly, the amount needed and tape to paper. TO SHORTEN: At lengthen or shorten lines, make an even pleat taking up amount needed. Tape in place. When lengthen or shorten lines are not given, make adjustments at lower edge of pattern.

BEFORE CUTTING: PRESS pattern pieces with a warm dry iron. PRE-SHRINK fabric by pre-washing washables or steam-pressing nonwashables. CIRCLE your cutting layout. 4. Stay-stitch upper edges and stitch seams of overlay same as skirt see steps 1 and 3, nishing the side seams by using one of the seam nishes for sheer fabrics. Clip center back seam of overlay to notch, being careful not to clip through stitching.

SIMPLY THE BEST SEAM FINISHES FOR SHEER FABRICS

Seams can be finished with one of the three methods mentioned below, choose which one you would like to use. OVERLOCK/SERGE - Overlock over raw edges of seam, using an overlock/serger machine.
TWO THREAD OVERLOCK THREE THREAD OVERLOCK

5. Pin WRONG side of overlay to RIGHT side of skirt, matching centers back and side seams, placing scalloped edge of front overlay at large dot and having raw edges even. Bring center back seam of overlay to INSIDE above clip. Baste raw edges together. 6

OR

DOUBLE STITCHED SEAM- stitch seam again 1/8"(3mm) from first stitching. Trim close to stitching. Press seam to one side. OR FRENCH SEAM- To make French seam, stitch first seam on OUTSIDE, a scant 1/4" (6mm) from seam line; trim close to stitching. Turn to INSIDE and stitch through seam allowance, encasing first seam.

6. Cut ribbon in half. Turn under one end of ribbon and center ribbon over small dot on front overlay. Pin ribbon to skirt front placing upper edge of ribbon 1/2" (1.3cm) below seam line, having ends extending evenly. Stitch close to both long edges of ribbon ending at scalloped edge of front overlay, as shown. Back-stitch to reinforce stitching. Trim ends diagonally and tie in a bow when garment is nished.

CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS FOR ALL VIEWS

7 8 7. Press under 5/8" (1.5cm) on LEFT back opening edge and 1/2" (1.3cm) on RIGHT back opening edge. Pin RIGHT back edge to zipper tape, placing pressed edge close to zipper teeth and tab end of zipper 1" (2.5cm) below upper edge of opening. Baste. Pin and baste LEFT back edge to zipper tape, lapping LEFT back 1/8" (3mm) over RIGHT back. Stitch as basted, using an adjustable zipper foot. 8. Apply fusible interfacing to WRONG side of facing sections following manufacturers directions. Stitch side seams of facing sections. To EDGE FINISH unnotched edge...stitch 1/4" (6mm) from edge, turn under along stitching and stitch OR zig-zag over the edge OR overlock/serge over the edge. 9. With RIGHT sides together, pin facing to garment, matching centers and side seams. (Facing extends 5/8" (1.5cm) beyond LEFT back opening edge and 1/2" (1.3cm) beyond RIGHT back opening edge.) Baste. To prevent stretching, baste center of twill tape along seam line. Stitch along seam line. Trim seam; clip curves. (Do not clip tape.)

STAY-STITCHING

NOTE: Skirt is worn 1" (2.5cm) below waistline. Determine nished length before sewing. 1. Stay-stitch upper edge of skirt front and back 1/2" (1.3cm) from cut edges in direction of arrows. This stitching stays in permanently and helps prevent stretching on curved edges. Stay-stitching will not be shown in the following illustrations.

2. RIBBON TRIM VIEW D- On OUTSIDE, center ribbon over skirt center front having raw ends even. Stitch close to both long edges. Baste raw edges. Tie remaining ribbon in a bow and tack to upper edge of skirt front when garment is nished.

10. To understitch press facing away from garment; press seam toward facing. Facing side up, stitch close to seam through facing and seam allowances. 11. Turn facing to INSIDE, turning under and slip-stitching center back edges; press. To keep the facing from rolling to OUTSIDE, secure it at the seam allowances by tacking it by hand, stitching in the ditch or using a small piece of fusible web. Sew hook and eye at upper edge when garment is nished

CONTINUE AS FOLLOWS FOR ALL VIEWS

3 3. To make darts in back, with RIGHT sides together, fold the fabric through the center of the dart, bringing broken lines and small dots together. On INSIDE, place pins at RIGHT angles to the broken lines. Stitch the dart from wide end to point. TIP- To prevent a bubble at the point, make the last few stitches right on the fold and leave the thread ends long enough to tie a knot. DO NOT back-stitch at the point. Press the dart at along the stitching to blend the stitches, then press dart toward center. Stitch center back seam from lower edge to notch. Back-stitch at notch to reinforce seam. Stitch front to back at side seams. 12

12. Press up hem. To EDGE FINISH the raw edge...stitch under 1/4" (6mm), zigzag, OR overlock/serge. Slip-stitch hem in place.

13. OVERLAY HEM VIEW C- Press under hem allowance on lower edge of overlay so that it is even with skirt. To form narrow hem, tuck under raw edge to meet crease. Press. Stitch hem in place.

Fold trim in half and mark fold with a pin. This is your center front. Bring centers together and mark folds with pins. These are your side markings. 20. On OUTSIDE, pin lace trim over skirt matching centers and side seams, placing lower edge of gathering stitches along placement line for trim. Pull up gathering stitches to t. To distribute fullness evenly, slide fabric along bobbin threads. Baste trim over placement line. 21. Pin lower edge of ribbon just over placement line for trim, turning under ends at center back seam. Stitch close to both long edges of ribbon. Slip-stitch ends of trim together invisibly. Tie remaining ribbon in a bow and tack to ribbon at skirt front as shown on front of envelope. 22
