As for those who come to me and hear my words and put them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

LEADERS TEACHING GUIDE

Dont you hate it when someone doesnt listen to you? Dont you hate it when someone knows what to do and doesnt do it? So what do you think is more important: Hearing or doing? Lets take a look at both.

The Benefits of Being a Hearer

Fourteen times in the New Testament, Jesus said these simple words: Whoever has ears, let them hear. It was his way of saying that God in the flesh was speaking, and it would be a good thing for them to listen. Being a hearer of Gods Word pleases God and is a good thing. Here are three benefits of being a hearer:

1. It brings Fruit.
But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
(Luke 8:15)

Jesus was telling the parable of the seeds here. He was talking about a true hearer, someone who hears and retains whats heard. Jesus said that if you really hearand seek to remember what you hearyoull produce fruit in your life. According to Galatians chapter 5, that fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Who couldnt use more of those in their lives?

2. It brings Faith.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
(Romans 10:17)

Have you ever thought about that? You cant have faith if you dont hear what God has to say. Do you find yourself doubting the things of God? Do you wish you had more faith? Become a better hearer of what God has to say. The simple truth is the more you hear from God, the more faith you have, and the more faith you have, the more you want to hear from God. So listen up!

3. It brings Blessings.
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.
(Revelation 1:3)

Now this is sweet indeed. Who doesnt want more blessings? No matter how were doing or how much God has already blessed us, we always want more. Revelation tells us that hearing from God brings the blessings we want. So to recap: The more youre a hearer, the more fruit youll produce, the more faith youll have, and the more blessings youll receive. So what about being a doer? How does it stack up to being a hearer?

The Benefits of Being a Doer

Now we must keep in mind that we dont earn our way into heaven by what we do. Doing is, however, an appropriate response to what God is already doing in us. Keeping that in mind, lets look at the benefits of being a doer:

1. It shows Faith.
But someone will say, You have faith; I have deeds. Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
(James 2:18)

James says one benefit of being a doer is that it shows your faith. Doers dont have to go around telling people theyre following Jesus; its obvious. Doing can also help produce faith by causing us to step out of our comfort zones and try different things. Essentially, doing is putting faith into action.

2. It shows Love.
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
(1 John 3:18)

YOU TEACH VOL. 4 OUTLINE The Workplace

Some people say, If you love me, youll do Thats ridiculous! However, if we love God and others, our actions will reflect that love. Just as a young man in love is motivated to paint his girlfriends name on the town water tower, doers express their love for God and others by what they do.

3. It shows Harvest.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
(Galatians 6:9)

Although the motivation for being a doer isnt about what we receive because of doing, the truth is that being a doer really does produce. In Galatians we read that if we hang in there and keep on doing good, well reap a great harvest. This is incentive to keep on doing even when its tough. So which seems better to you? In the battle of hearing versus doing, which one should you choose? May I suggest

Not Hearing or Doingbut Hearing and Doing

As for those who come to me and hear my words and put them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
(Luke 6:47-48)

The combination of hearing and doing allows us to build the foundation of life on the solid rock of Jesus Christ. Continuing to hear well leads to making good choices. In short, a solid person is one whos both a hearer and a doer. Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
(Deuteronomy 6:3)

YOU TEACH VOL. 4 OUTLINE The Workplace

Again, God says hearing and doing is the key to helping things go well in life. That doesnt mean everything will be a cakewalk, but if were hearing, were gaining wisdom, and if were doing, we are acting it out. That is a formula for success in Gods eyes. He replied, Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.
(Luke 11:28)

We just noted that hearing brings blessings and that doing yields harvest. Working together, these are a onetwo punch. In this passage, Jesus says that we will be blessed if we are hearers and doers. One last thought: Our world is filled with people who need to hear the gospel. However, the Bible says we need to be doers in order to help them be hearers to begin with. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!
(Romans 10:14-15)

As Christians one of the best doer things we can do is share the love of Jesus with those who need to hear. Maybe you can find a time this week to be a real doer in that respect. Because in helping someone become a hearer, you could eventually help that person become a doer as well.
