Suspect charged with attempted homicide

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR A 50-year-old West Bend man was charged in Washington County Circuit Court Aug. 7 with attempted first degree intentional homicide and four other charges. Craig Hron, 50, was also charged with first degree reckless injury, use of a dangerous weapon, stalking resulting in bodily harm, armed carjacking and first degree recklessly endangering public safety. A conviction for attempted homicide carries a possible sentence of 60 years in prison, a charge of first degree reckless injury carries a possible sentence of 25 years in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both; a charge of stalking and first degree recklessly endangering public safety each carry a possible sentence of 12 years six months in prison, a $25,000 fine, or both; and a charge of armed carjacking carries a possible sentence of 40 years in prison, a $100,000 fine or both. According to the criminal complaint, West Bend Police were called to the Walmart parking lot at 1515 W. Paradise Drive at 7:01 a.m. Aug. 4 after receiving a report of a fight involving a man with a knife. Officers arriving at the scene saw several individuals restraining Hron. During the investigation, a woman told police she had been attacked by Hron, who was her ex-boyfriend. The woman told police she had resided with Hron for approximately four and a half year but moved out of the residence on June 23. The woman filed a restraining order against Hron Aug. 2, which was granted by a Washington County Circuit Court commissioner but which had not yet been served to Hron. The woman said she texted Hron July 12 advising him not to call or text or come near her. Hron subsequently attempted to talk with the victim at her workplace and current residence.

The woman told police that on Aug. 4, she was entering her vehicle at Walmart when Hron came running at her and tried to open her car door while also taking her remote garage door opener. Hron then pulled out a knife and a BB gun. The victim started kicking at the subject while attempting to pull the door shut. Hron pulled the victim out of the vehicle and he tried to take her vehicle. The victim continued to struggle with Hron until two to three other individuals began to restrain Hron. After the incident, the victim had several lacerations to her upper body. A witness told police he observed Hron punching and then stabbing the victim, prompting the witness to begin

Hartford hammers Rubicon

Rubicon remained in third place in the Rock River baseball Northern Division standings with a 10-4 record following a 7-1 loss at Hartford Aug. 2. The Red Sox will finish the regular season at Oakfield at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Hartford was in fifth place with an 8-7 record. The Hawks finish the regular season at Juneau County at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Slinger was fourth in the division with 86 record following a 10-2 win over the Horicon Honkers Aug. 4. Slinger finishes the regular season at Hustisford at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11. Hustisford has a 7-7 record following a 7-1 win over Oakfield Aug. 4. Land O'Lakes results The West Bend Benders were sixth in the Land O'Lakes North Division with a 6-12 record after losing two games over three days. The Benders beat Plymouth 5-2 Aug. 3 but then lost to Howard's Grove (11-10) the next day and then lost to the Cedarburg Mercs (13-0) on Aug. 5. The Benders begin postseason play by playing at Grafton at 3 p.m. Aug. 10. In West Division play, the West Bend 7 Up beat the Oconomowoc 5-Os Aug. 2 and followed that with a 12-6 win at Lannon Aug. 4. West Bend finished third in the West Division with a 12-6 record. The 7 Up will begin postseason play by hosting the Menomonee Falls Lakers at Carl Kuss field at 1 p.m. Aug. 10.

hitting Hron in the arm. He said two other individuals arrived to help restrain Hron until police arrived. Police recovered video surveillance from Walmart which showed the attack taking place. When questioned by police, Hron said he believed he was being set up by the victim and another individual. When shown the surveillance video, Hron did not deny it showed that he had a knife during the attack. During a court appearance Aug. 7, bail was set at $500,000. The next court date is at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 22 . The charges are the most recent contact with law enforcement for Hron. According to a July 18, 2013 article at www.postcrescent.com, Hron was at one time a possible suspect in the death of Berit Beck, an 18year-old Sturtevant woman who disappeared July 17, 1990 while in Fond du Lac. Beck was found dead in the Fond du Lac area five weeks later. However, the story states that detectives at the time werent able to directly tie Hron to the case. According to Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, Hron was also convicted of a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-second offense in 2011 in Washington County and disorderly conduct in 2009 in Fond du Lac County.

Man arrested for use of dangerous weapon during tactical incident

A 22-year-old West Bend man is facing an endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon charge as a result of a tactical situation that occurred in the 400 block of S. 17th Avenue in West Bend Aug. 6. According to the police report: A citizen called the West Bend Police Department at 2:05 p.m. and reported that his male roommate made statements that he was seeing intruders in the residence. The caller/roommate stated there were no intruders in the residence. The roommate stated he and another roommate attempted to talk to the subject and calm him down, but the subject insisted that there were intruders. The suspect then armed himself with several firearms including a high powered rifle. The two roommates fled the residence and called police. Two other roommates were still in the house with the subject. When officers arrived they were able to help the other two room-

mates safely leave the residence. The suspect who had armed himself remained in the house. Officers established a perimeter and surrounding neighbors were either evacuated or instructed to shelter in place. Officers on scene attempted to contact the subject, however received no response. The West Bend Police Special Response Team responded and began negotiations with the man. The man exited the residence at 3:30 p.m. and was taken into custody without further incident. There were no injuries to the suspect, citizens, or any officers. Four rifles were recovered from the residence. The charge has been forwarded to the Washington County District Attorneys Office.

Easy ways to save energy at home

(StatePoint) Whether you are motivated to help the planet or simply want to slash home energy and water bills, there are easy steps to reduce your homes carbon footprint. "Today more than ever, we see the environmental impact we have on our communities by the choices we make daily -- from the food we eat to the way we run our homes. While its easy to pretend these choices dont matter, its even easier to take steps to live more sustainably and feel good about it," says Brett Beitzel, a brand manager at Amana, a household appliances manufacturer focused on encouraging consumers to reduce their carbon footprints. There are several places in your home where you can take small steps toward a smaller carbon footprint. Kitchen Become more aware of what you put in your shopping basket. Include more locallyand organically-grown and raised produce and meat in your diet. Avoid overly-packaged products and eat sustainably caught or farmed fish. These choices are often healthier, too. You can also make a substantial impact by replacing your old refrigerator with a newer energy-saving model. Compared to pre-2000 models, newer refrigerators can use up to 41 percent less energy. As one of the few appliances that run constantly, that means a lot of energy and cost savings. Luckily, environmentally conscious home appliance manufacturers, such as Amana, are going above the Department of Energys current usage guidelines by making energy efficiency a priority with newer models. You can also find efficient dishwashers that save water and energy. But even with a newer model, youll want to be sure youre only running the machine when full. For maximum savings, look for ENERGY STAR qualified models on all appliances. Garage Cars that don't have properly inflated tires account for a 10 percent increase on fuel costs. Check tire pressure regularly to ensure optimum performance. And tune up your bike so you can use it more often! Unfortunately, the garage is also where many send their old refrigerators to store extra soda. Research shows that 10 million "second" refrigerators cost consumers an average of $1.62 billion yearly in energy costs. For a cool move, make all your refrigerators energy efficient. Laundry Room The way you launder your clothes can impact local waterways. Look for eco-friendly detergents and opt for the concentrated form to reduce plastic consumption. Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible and dont leave them in the dryer longer than necessary. Consider replacing your washer and dryer with newer energy-saving models. Not only may this qualify you for rebates from state or local utility companies, your water savings and energy savings will add up. Front load washing machines are great choices, as conventional top-load washing machines built before 2004 use 81 percent more energy and 77 percent more water than some newer models. Its your planet and you have the power to treat it well, starting at home.
