1.Rice type : Mainly two types a. Need around six months to grow They are of best quality, sweet and slightly astringent, oily (means not dry), cold in nature, increases vigor, light, diuretic, good for health and does not increase any doshas. And due to rice stool get well formed and less in quantity. E.g. Red rice, Basmati, Kalimoong, Jeera, Aambemohar etc. This type also has some varieties of low quality. Those are hot in nature, heavy, sour and increases kapha and pitta. eg. Yavak, highmak. b. Need around 2-3 months to growThey are oily, heavy ,sweet and cold in nature. E.g. Mahabrihi, Krishnabrihi, Sharad, varak etc. 2. Wheat Is cold, heavy, oily, sweet, increases vigor and strength, life enhancing, helps to clear bowel, reduces vata, pitta and helps in joining bones. 3. Barley (Jav) Is cold, heavy, dry sweet, helps to clear bowel ,increases stool quantity means more fibrous), reduces kapha, pitta and increases vata and also reduces fats and urine. 4. Sorgum (Jwari Indian millet) Cold, light , dry and sweet.

Holistic Health Course 2012 5. Bajara (Indian millet) - Hot heavy, dry, sweet, increases vata and pitta and 4 increases digestive fire. 6. Ragi ( Nachni)- Cold, light, sweet.

A. Dicot seeds ( having two half together)


They are generally astringent and sweet, cold, dry, light, increases vata, constipative and good for kapha , pitta and fat problems. 1.Greengram (Moong) Best among pulses, less vata producing, strength giving, best for making soup (Dal) and purities (cleans) wounds. 2. Red gram (Masoor)- Strength giving, good for skin, increases vata, good for making bathing powder. 3.Pigeon peas (Toovar)- Increases vata, cold, reduces kapha and pitta. 4. Garden peas (Matar)- Increases vata too much, little bitter also. 5. Chinese peas( Chuli)- Increases vata too much, dry, heavy and increases bowel quantity.

5 6.Chick peas (chana) - Increases vata, constipating. 7. Flat beans (Pavata)- Hot, increases pitta and vata, reduces kapha heavy, not good for eyes and genesis, helps in getting motions. 8. Kidney beans (Mataki) - Cold, light, increases vata. 9.Black gram (Urad)- Hot, heavy, oily, sweet, helps in getting motions, reduces vata increases kapha, pitta and fats, increases stool quantity, increases shukra dhatu (responsible for genesis) and nourishing. 10. Horse gram (kulith) Hot, sour, dry, light, increases pitta, causes acidity, reduces kapha and vata.

B. Monocot seeds (can not be divided into two)


1. Sesame- Hot, heavy, oily, sweet and astringent, increases kapha and pitta, reduces vata, increases digestive fire, strength giving, giving complexion to skin, good for health of hairs and increases intelligence, not good when having skin disease and bad for health of eyes if used in excess. 2. Flax seeds- Hot, heavy, oily, sweet and bitter, increases kapha and pitta, bad for eyes and shukra dhatu. 3. Safflower- same as above. 4. Mustard- Hot, light, oily, pungent and bitter, increases digestive fire, increases pitta.

A. Fruit vegetables
1. Ash gourd (Kohala)- Cold, heavy, sweet, give strength, reduces vata and pitta, increases vigor, good for health of hairs, good for diseases due to hotness. Tonic. 2. White/ Bottle gourd(Dudhi, Lauki)- Cold, heavy, dry, sweet, increases taste of tongue, reduces pitta and kapha, good against heat and tiredness. 3. Cucumber (Kakadi)- Cold, heavy, diuretic, sweet, reduces pitta and increases kapha and vata. 4. Red pumpkin (Tambada bhopala)- Cold, heavy, dry, sweet, increases kapha and vata. 5. Bitter gourd (Karale) - Cold, light, dry, bitter and little pungent , reduces pitta and kafa, increases vata, very good in reducing kapha. 6. Sponge gourd (Ghosale)- Light, dry 7. Ridge gourd (Dodaka)- Cold, sweet and bitter, reduces pitta and increases kapha and vata. 8. Snake gourd (Padaval) - Cold, sweet and bitter, increases vata and reduces kapha and pitta, good against worms, gives taste to mouth.

9. Ivy gourd (Tondali)- Cold, heavy, sweet, reduces pitta and vata, increases 7 kapha, gives taste to mouth. 10. Drum sticks (Shevaga)- Hot, light, dry, sweet, pungent and bitter, reduces kapha and vata, increases pitta, reduces fats. 11. Egg plant (Vange)- Hot, light, pungent, bitter and sweet, increases digestive fire, gives taste to mouth, reduces kapha. 12. Yma/ felegu potato (Suran) - Light, dry, astringent and pungent, reduces kapha, increases digestive fire, good for piles. 13. Radish(Mula)- Tender- Hot, light, little salty and bitter, reduces kapha. Old- Hot, heavy, pungent, increases pitta. 14.Carrot (Gajar)-- Hot, light, dry, sweet, pungent and bitter, reduces kapha and vata, increases pitta. 15.Onian (Kanda)- Hot, heavy, oily(not dry), sweet, strength giving, increases kapha, reduces vata, and increases pitta very little (means not much). 16.Ginger (Aale)-Hot, heavy, pungent and sweet, reduces kapha and vata, increases pitta , gives taste to mouth, digestive and increases hunger. 17.Ladies finger (Bhendi)- Hot, sweet and sour, increases kapha, increases shukra, gives taste to mouth 18.Cabbage (kobi)- Cold, light, sweet and bitter, increases vata and reduces pitta . 19. Potato (Batata)- Heavy, dry, sweet, constipating, therefore needs more oil while cooking to balance its dryness. 20. Water chestnut (Shingade)- Sweet and astringent, cold, heavy and dry.

Leafy vegetables
1.Lambs quarters (Chakavat)-Light, Sweet, salty and pungent, strength giving, reduces all doshas, helps to pass motions. 2. Amaranthus- Cold, heavy, dry and sweet, increases vata and kapha, reduces pitta, causes constipation. 3. Amaranthus (different variety) - Cold, light, dry and sweet, and decreases pitta. 4.Bladder dock (Ambat chuka) - Hot, light, sour, dry, increases hunger, increases vata and reduces pitta. 5.Spinach( Palak)- Cold, heavy, dry and sweet, astringent, reduces pitta, increases vata and kapha, helps for easy motions 6.Safflower leaves (Kardai)-. Hot, heavy, dry, sour, increases vata and pitta, reduces kapha and helps for easy motions. 7.Fenugreek leaves (Meshi)- Hot, light, dry, pungent, increases hunger, reduces vata and kapha and increases pitta. 8. Radish leaves(Mula patra)- Hot, light, dry, increases pitta, good in case of enlarged liver and spleen. 9.Mustard leaves (Mohari patra)- Hot, heavy, dry, increases pitta and kapha, pungent and sweet, causes acidity. 10. Betel leaves (Nagvel-kahnyache pan)- Pungent, dry, reduces kapha, cleans mouth.

1.Grapes (Draksha)- Best amongst the fruits, sweet and little astringent, cold, oily, heavy, diuretic, good for health of eyes, reduces pita, reduces tiredness and thirst, increases power of genesis, helps for easy motions. Note: sour grapes have different properties. 2.Pomgranate (Dalimba)-Good for heat, light, oily, gives taste, increases hunger. Sweet- Reduces all doshas, Sour- Reduces kapha and vata, little hot but does not increase pitta. 3. Mango (Amba)- Sweet, little sour, cold, increases kapha, reduces vata and pitta, strength giving, increases dahtus, muscles and shukra. 4.Wood apple (Kavatha) Astringent, sour, light, dry, increases vata and pitta, reduces kapha, good for throat (kapha problems of throat) good for heart. 5.Tamarind (Chinch)- Sour, hot, heavy, reduces vata and kapha, increases pitta, increases hunger. FROM NO 6 TO 17 GENERAL QUALITIES ARE Heavy, cold, oily, sweet, improves health, increases kapha, increases shukra, reduces burning wounds and weakness, purifies blood and pitta.

Other special qualities6.Banana (Keli)- Increases virya (the power of genesis), sweet and astringent 7. Jack fruit (Fanas)- Increases muscles and fats. 8.Dates and dry dates (Khajur)- Astringent, gives strength, reduces vata and pitta, increases shukra, reduces fatigue, energy giving. 9.Coconut (Naral)- Increases muscles, gives strength and energy. 10. Green berry (Bore)- Reduces vata and pitta, nourishing. 11.Fig(Anjir)- Reduces vata and pitta, increases quality of stools and thus helps in easy motions. 12. Almonds (Badam)-Hot, sweet and little sour and astringent, reduces vata, increases shukra. 13. Apricot (Jardalu)- Qualities as given in general. 14. Walnut (Akrod)- Hot, reduces vata, increases pitta, nourishing. 15. Pistachios (Pista) - Qualities as given in general 16. Prunus / plumbs- Sour and sweet. 17.Kaddapa almonds(Charoli) - Reduces vata and pitta ,cold, good for skin, helps for easy motions. 18.Kharbuja Sweet, cold, heavy , oily reduces vata and pitta, increases kapha, diuretic, increases vigor. 19.Water melon(Kalingad) - Sweet, cold, heavy , oily, reduces vata and pitta, increases kafa, diuretic, increases vigor. 20.Black berry (Jambhul)- Sweet, astringent, sour, cold, heavy, dry, reduces kapha and pitta, increases vata too much, constipating, good for throat (reduces kapha)

Orange (Santre)-Sweet, sour, hot, heavy, oily, increases kapha and pitta, reduces vata, diuretic, gives taste to mouth, increases hunger. 23. Kokum/butter tree (Kokum)- Sour, pungent, astringent, hot, but does not increase pitta, dry, light, reduces kapha and vata, gives taste, increases hunger, reduces thirst. 24.
