Teaching operational Manual This manual is intended to inform the teachers of the systems and procedures used in the

school regarding teaching and the school. If you have any further questions please speak to your DOS or ADOS who will be happy to help you. The academic program

English lessons take place on 6 mornings a week (approximately 20 hours per week, depending on the age group). Students are placed in multilingual classes according to their age and level. Each class has two teachers: a Functional and Skills teacher for lessons 1&3 and an Active English teacher for lesson 2. Both teachers are expected to work together to produce innovative and student centred lesson that emphasize communication in a positive and fun environment. Teachers are required to: Use positive reinforcement to encourage students and develop language learning. Use the communicative approach in delivering lessons, emphasizing language practice and production. Emphasize lexical competence and development. Choose realistic and challenging goals for their lessons. Adapt their lessons and language targets to suit the needs of the learners. Maintain a high standard of teaching throughout the 5 week course. Age, levels and the syllabus The age groups are divided as follows: Tigers: 7-10 Mainstream: 11-14 Seniors: 15-17 There are 20 levels ranging from beginner to proficiency: Beginner and elementary have 2 levels each pre-intermediate to advanced has 3 levels each proficiency has 4 levels. The main syllabus is to be used in Functional English and English Skills lessons (1&3) while a separate task based syllabus is used for the Active English lesson. The teacher should adapt the syllabus to the appropriate age and interest level of their class. An excursion preparation lesson is taught twice a week before the excursion trip. This lesson should include basic requests, questions and phrases the students will likely hear on their excursion as well as giving the students information about the excursion to really make their trip come alive. The excursion lesson will also set challenges to the students for completion on the excursion (e.g. Oxford: what is opposite Alices shop?/draw the first animal you see in the museum etc) This should then be marked, collected, discussed in the following lesson and added to the student folder. Books and resources

English in Mind levels 1-5 are used to support the syllabus for mainstream and senior classes Cool English levels 2-6 (beginner to intermediate) and New English Parade 5&6 (upper intermediate to advanced) are used to support the syllabus for tiger classes. A wide selection of resource books including reward, communication games, play games with English, children in action, pairwork, teamwork, timesaver, etc will be made available in the teachers room. Access to www.onestopenglish.com as well as a wide range of scanned childrens resource books (for songs, games and stories) will also be made available to you. Grammar and vocabulary reference books (English grammar in use, practical English usage) as well as teacher training books (Learning teaching, teaching unplugged, teaching teenagers) are also available in the teachers room. Active English Active English combines specialist skills and English skills taught together to create a week long task based mini course that stands apart from other English lessons and produces work that can be shown in a weekly presentation. There is room for negotiation with the students in the Active English syllabus and the teacher is required to manage the goals of the class with the quality of the teaching. i.e. if the class choose to practice Active Business, they would practice meetings, interviews, negotiations and presentations during the week then during the weekly presentation repeat a successful production section of an earlier lesson on stage, e.g. demonstrate how to argue during a meeting.

Classroom Rules

The classrooms each contain a whiteboard which must be cleaned after every lesson. Tables and chairs which can be moved into communicative teaching friendly layouts but should be returned to their rows on the last day of the camp after classes have finished. Some classrooms contain computers which can be used as part of your class. A list of these classrooms will be posted on the notice board in the teachers room. A lot of the classrooms have interactive whiteboards which will be covered. They are not to be used or uncovered in any circumstances. After teaching each class please ensure that all of the windows are closed properly, the lights are turned off and the classroom is left tidy All student folders must be kept in the classrooms overnight. When students move class the teachers must ensure that the student folders are given to the appropriate teacher on the same day. Students are not allowed to eat, drink, use their mobile phones, chew gum or leave litter in the classrooms. Students must only speak English in the classrooms and must not use their dictionaries excessively. Teachers wishing to teach outside the classroom or use a DVD in class must request permission from the DOS first and give a lesson plan to support the request.

Classroom emergencies If an emergency arises during a lesson, e.g. student illness: 1. Give the supervision request form (kept with your class register) to a reliable student to take to your neighbouring teacher. 2. Set your class a task they can do independently (e.g. reading) 3. When the teacher has confirmed they can watch your class, deal with the emergency by going to the DOS first, the general office second, welfare third. 4. Explain the situation and return immediately to your class. Do not leave your class unattended and do not allow students to go to the offices (or any other part of the school except for the nearest classroom) unattended. With the exception of Humanities room 13 in St Marys school, every classroom has another next to it or nearby so you will always have someone nearby to watch over your class allowing you to deal with the emergency.

Monday new student arrivals Each Monday will see new student arrivals. Every effort is made to make this as least disruptive to the main student body as possible. Every Monday reduced classes of the same level will be merged into one class. The DOS will choose one teacher to teach the merged class and one teacher to assist placement testing the new students. Teachers will be informed of these changes by Friday in the morning meeting and via notice board. Classes continue as normal during the First lesson while the new students are placement tested. The new students will be put into their new classes during the first juice break when the merged classes are separated. During Lesson 3 and 4 all teachers will be teaching their own classes. The third Monday sees the largest intake of new student arrivals, on this day the placement testing teachers will remain with their placement test class and teach the mixed ability class as with the first Monday. The Student Folder The student folder is given to every student on their first day and consists of the following pages: Page Front cover Student progress chart Find someone who My contacts book Excursion information Ascot information and map School information and map Teacher information Activity Leader information Who is Billy? The register is to be completed at the beginning of every function English class. The DOS will check every classroom in the first ten minutes of the functional English lesson to check that all students are present. The class register is also used for the fire drill and in emergencies to account for the students so it is important that all information is completed by 4:30pm every Monday and that any changes to the registers are updated and completed by 2:30pm every Tuesday. All registers must be completed daily and kept in the register tray in the teachers room. All registers must be in the tray by 2:30pm everyday with the only exception of Monday when they must be in by 4:30pm. The work done section of the register must be completed daily and include page, book on computer exercises references to the materials used in class. A copy of the syllabus used should be kept with the register. Teachers should tick work completed on the syllabus to accompany the work done record. Class register 2011 UIC Junior Vacations

Juice Breaks It is important to supervise the students during the juice break as there are many opportunities during the breaks for bullying, accidents and truancy to occur during this time. This time is also an opportunity for the teachers to socialise with the students and meet their friends. The students are always keen to see who their friends are being taught by and it helps to build the community of the camp and build the rapport that will be essential during excursions, fire drills and assemblies. St Marys School The teachers supervise four main areas in teams of two during the juice breaks. One teacher must be on duty at all times. This allows toilet, juice or cigarette breaks for the second teacher to be arranged within the team. All students should say on the grass and line up in their classes before returning to lessons as a group with their teacher. Each teacher will assign a class name to call out so that their students know where to go (E.G. Ascot Superstars) this name will then be the official class name. From time to time building materials (e.g. bricks) may be left in this area, please ensure the students to not climb on them or sit on them. Punctuality is essential for everyone to enjoy the juice break. Lateness upsets the students and teachers alike. The juice break rota will change weekly to ensure fairness.

Rainy juice breaks

If the weather is bad the juice break will be held in the assembly hall. You will be informed of this change in the morning meeting or during your lesson. Sunny Area The canteen wall The juice area Responsibility Active and younger students. Ensure the students do not climb on the wall. A chaotic area (The DOS will usually help with this area). Dispense the juice and water, collect the empty cups. Ensure an orderly queuing system is used. Mainstream students and those coupling up enjoy this area. Ensure that students are not walking or standing on the wall. Ensure no stones are being kicked, thrown or collected. (Students will pass here to go to the toilet.) This is a truancy problem area but is easy to keep an eye on as there is restricted access. Rainy Area Mid seating section Stage area handing out juice Rear seating area and fire escape in hallway The toilet area and hallway

The Stones and wall

The toilet entrance

St Georges The juice break is held in the canteen where juice and biscuits are provided. There are four main areas of supervision, the teachers work individually and rotate daily. If a teacher is not scheduled to be on an area, they should still support their team and remain aware when spending their break in the canteen. Area The canteen entrance The juice and biscuit area The toilet entrance Outside wall area Responsibility Ensure this area is not blocked and that students move down into the canteen. Ensure no students leave without their teacher. Dispense the juice and water. Ensure an orderly queuing system is used. Ensure that the cups are returned for washing/plastic cups are put in the bin. Ensure students do not hoard all the biscuits. Ensure that no bullying is taking place and that no damage is being done to the area. If the students do go outside, ensure they do not sit on the wall and that play is kept at a safe level.

Assembly Every morning the students have an assembly from 8:45 to 9:00 to inform the students of any news, birthdays, announcements, regulations, reminders or changes to the schedule taking place that day and reward good behaviour. The assembly hall will have designated seating areas for each class and the students must sit in these chairs with their teacher who will supervise their class and those around them, get the students energised and having fun so they enter your class excited, awake and with the right attitude to learning. A Typical Assembly: Good Morning Shout out a big good morning to wake everyone up! Ascot! Introduce the It is important that the students know the whole teaching team for teachers* (Mondays lessons, excursions and general support. only)

Announcements Lost property Birthdays Billy Rewards Fine Day dance

To inform the students and monitors of any changes/regulations This is collected from Welfare before assembly every morning, displayed in the assembly for collection. A card is given with a small gift and everyone sings happy birthday. Billy is our mascot panda who spots good behaviour. Teachers nominate students for a Billy and the student is called up in assembly and given a sticker to wear all day. The assembly ends with a simple dance to get everyone moving .

The assembly is presented by two teachers with one teacher operating the sound system that rotate throughout the team. The DOS will present the first week to get the ball rolling. ********** Forms Certificates The certificates are printed every Thursday. Please ensure you have given the correct level to be printed on the certificates and checked the spelling of your students names and given any amendments to your DOS by Wednesday at 4:30pm. Your printed certificates will be available for you to sign by Thursday 5pm to be handed out on Saturday. Reports A report must be given to each student to accompany the certificate. These reports should be printed and signed by Friday 5pm. The teacher should look back over the student progress chart in the students folders and make their comments according to the progress the teacher feels the student has made over the course which may be 2,3,4 or 5 weeks long. For the students who have had more than one teacher, the teacher writing the report must speak to the previous teachers to compile a full and accurate report for the student. The reports are given to the students parents and should include progress made as well as areas to improve on in the future. It is important to be specific and as detailed as you can.
