THE IPHONE AND ITOUCH

First, updating firmware is meaningless to hacked or unlocked iPhones.

Sure, you can click the Update button in iTunes with your hacked or
unlocked iPhone connected. It will go through the motions and
promptly fail. You'll then be told you must restore your iPhone because
a "problem" was encountered. So I won't be covering updating.
Updating is really only for people who don't modify, or unlock their
iPhones. You can restore the iPhone to any firmware you want. It
doesn't matter what firmware is currently on the iPhone. Restoring is
for putting any version of firmware onto the iPhone, even putting older
firmware onto it (also referred to as downgrading). Keep in mind,
restoring erases the entire contents of the iPhone and puts all settings
back to their default state. There are two methods for performing a
restore.

Method 1: Restoring to current firmware

1. Regardless of what firmware you are on, if you click the Restore
button it will restore and update your iPhone to the latest
firmware/software (if not already on the current firmware). This
firmware is downloaded over your Internet connection from the
Apple server. In this scenario I connected an iPhone with 1.0.2
firmware on it, and clicked Restore. A pop up warning appears
saying that it will not only restore, but update the iPhone to the
latest firmware (which at this time was 1.1.2).
2. In this scenario I connected an iPhone with the latest firmware
already installed (1.1.2), and clicked Restore. I get a different
message this time.
3. Once you click Restore, here are the messages that go by while
this process takes place.
4. Once the restore is finished you will see this screen on iTunes.
5. Here's what you'll see on the iPhone when restored to 1.1.2
firmware.

Method 2: Restoring older firmware (downgrading)

Remember, you can restore to the most recent firmware, or to any

previous firmware. This firmware must already be on your computer's
hard drive. It it not downloaded automatically from Apple. If you
wanted to save time, you could restore to the most current firmware
this way. Here are links to download the firmware directly from Apple:

Firmware restore file for 1.1.2.

Firmware restore file for 1.1.1.
Firmware restore file for 1.0.2.
Firmware restore file for 1.0.1.
Firmware restore file for 1.0.

1. In this scenario, I connect an iPhone with 1.0.2 firmware on it to

iTunes. I then press the Shift key on my keyboard and click the
Restore button in iTunes.
2. A file browser window opens. In this case I'm going to put 1.0.2
back on to the iPhone. I navigate to the folder where I have the
1.0.2 firmware already stored. I click the .ipsw.zip file and click
Open.
3. Here are all the messages that go by while this process takes
place.
4. Once the restore is finished you will see this screen on iTunes.

Sometimes when downgrading firmware (and there is a baseband

compatability issue) you will get error messages. This is a simple
problem to solve. Use ibrickr to get the iPhone out of recovery mode,
which it will appear to be stuck in. There are two very common error
messages: 1015 and 1013. They each show a unique graphic on the
iPhone when they occur.
