Wireless Communications Systems Designs ( ) Midterm test 11/09/2009

This test is designed to have a total of 100 points, please answer each question in detail. You should have up to 3 hours to finish this test. If conditions provided in the questions are not sufficient solve the problem, you can make your own assumptions to solve that (minor reduction might still apply depending on whether your assumptions are reasonable or not)

------------------------------------------------------------------------Question 1 Reuse Factor/Cell Planning (20 points): 1. (5 points) Please use the attached paper to fill out the reuse factor of 4, N = 4 2. (15 points) Calculate the achievable downlink S/I (signal to interference ratio) for N=4 based on first tier and 2nd tier cochannel interference cells. Approximation is allowed especially from the co-channel cells to the mobile of the center cell. We assume the propagation order = 3.5. Question 2 CDMA Capacity (20 Points): 1. (5 points each) From our discussion, CDMA capacity for an isolated cell can be calculated as N = E / N + 1 b 0 a. Please list the conditions that make the above calculation valid. b. Please calculate the capacity N if W/R = 21 dB and Eb/N0 = 7dB c. If the CDMA capacity calculated from (b) is based on 1.25 MHz, please calculate the TDMA GSM system capacity whether each 200 kHz can support 8 users. d. Is CDMA capacity more than TDMA system? If not why CDMA has been considered of having better spectrum efficiency? Please provide your argument.

Question 3. Wireless Fundamental (20 points) For a transmission channel, if there exist a deep fade in between t1 and t2 (all transmission in that period will result in failure) from a total observation time of T seconds. There are 10 users share the same channel for the transmission and each packet length is 20 msec and each packet has 100 encoded bits. 1. (10 Points) Please propose a mechanism that could avoid the consecutive errors during the deep fade and all 10 users can maintain a target packet error rate (PER). You need to justify how your proposed mechanism can achieve the objective. Note: out of 100 bits, the packet will be declared as successfully receive iff there are two and less bits are in error. 2. (10 points) Based on your proposed mechanism and the target packet error rate of 1% for all users (ideally), a. What is the minimum duration of the deep fade can be tolerated if the target PER for each user is calculated based on 100 packets received. (note: you need to consider the 1% PER criterion) Question 4. CDMA Orthogonal codes (20 points) Assumed all users have the same chip rate, Rc, and is equal to the transmission rate of user i, Ri, times the code length, Lc: Rc= Ri * Lc 1. (10 points) Please design orthogonal codes with code lengths of 2, 4, and 8. Please prove the orthogonality of your designed codes. 2. (10 points) Considering a CDMA BS which serves three users, u1, u2, and u3 with the corresponding transmission rates of R1, R2, and R3 and R1:R2:R3 = 1: 2: 4 Using the codes that you have created and if the information sent repeatedly from users 1 is [1, 1, 0, 1], user 2 is [1, 1, 1, 0] and user 3 is [ 1, 0, 0, 1]. Please calculate the aggregated output (based on chip sequence) from BS which combines (sum) all three users output chips. (list only the portion that is not repeated) Question 5, Power Control (20 points)

Please design a systematic power control scheme in a CDMA system for various target frame error rates (FER): 1. 2. (10 points) Please show how your power control scheme can achieve various FERs, likes 1%, 2%, 3%, and etc statistically. You need to justify your answer) (10 points) Based on your proposed power control scheme, please calculate the ratio of accumulated power of 100 frames transmitted (each frame is 20 msec) for 1% FER target and 3% FER target controls.
