In many ways the CSA is the OPEC of the 1800s. Slave prices remain relatively stable as cotton prices return to high levels fol lowing the absorbtion of the cotton glut of the late 1850s. This is mainly due t o the CSA embargo on Cotton sales in 1861 and early 1862. -Slavery is enshrined as a popular institution and given strong constitutional p rotection at the state level . Severa l of these affected states seize some undelivered union military supplies (blank ets, clothing, food and medicine)to help ameliorate the suffering. Seward, while attending a White House dinner party, admitted that there was indeed suffering going on, but that the "ragged masses best suffer in the cold, to the extent tha

Their price for intervention is the recognizing of thei r holdings in northern mexico(where Maximillian cannot keep control anyway) is r eadily accepted. Work begins immediately on a transcontinental railroad originat ing from Houston. -The CSA protests over fugitive slaves arriving in the US, but its told too bad, old fruit. The fugitive slaves quickly either go west. -In clandestine meetings with represenatives of Queen Victoria's government, Jud ah P. Benjamin, the director of the Confederate Foreign Services, negotiates and end to the slave trade(only officially but the trade continues in an unofficial form. The slave trad was wasready illegal but it wasn't really enforced). Lee handily defeats Joe Brown for the Presidency. South carolina has set up a plainclothes police force meant for keeping slave s and abolitionists in check called the State security or eventually the SS. In the 1870's other states establish their own SS forces. In 1886 after the war wit h the union, a national SS force is created but the state SS forces remain. The SS is given some military hardware(for dealing with BIG situatiosn but its small er than the military). The name "blackshirts" for the SS force develops as a cyn ical name for them based on their black uniforms... -Haiti and Santo Domingo request protection by the US. Haiti becomes a US protec trate. In a highly corrupt deal, Santo Domingo's government sells itself to the US. Despite being a very corrupt deal it manages to narrowly pass the senate(nat ional security considerations and the advantages of having a state in the carrib ean to strike at the CSA). Along with going west, some unions blacks start headi ng to the haitian protecterate and the territory of santo domingo. -President Seward orders troops to mass upon the US/CS border, to "protect again st invasion from the slaveholding states". President Lee, in an address to the C S Congress, calls for preparedness, and calls President Seward's actions "Border ing on the nonsensical" and without cause. Colorado Territory and Washington Ter ritory are admitted as US states. The New England states' governors meet to cons ider secession, and are arrested by federal troops. Said ammendment requiring unanamous consent of ALL states to repeal. 1870's-US industrialization continues. The Federal government is growing stronge r and without the agrarian alliance of Midwestern farmers and Southern democrats the North East and New England dominate the republic. The USA (without the stro ng isolationist/warlike tendencies of the CSA states) becomes moreinvolved in wo rld politics and trade. Graudally Europe is pulling away from the CSA asalterna tive cotton sources are developed. The USA moves farther to the left politicall y than in our TL because it is less rural and has a higher percentage of immigra nts than our TL USA. Moderate social reforms are instituted. . The union see a burst of new colleges, institutions, factories, and public works projects while the CSA keeps to the same ways it was with no need to change. -The Confederate government in order to get more slaves to work the planations a nd the new lands opened up in north mexico begins enslaving a large chunk of the more black looking central americans(well the poorer ones, if you're rich or ow n land you're just fine). The nonslave central americans are denied political ri ghts. THe rich elites in the conquered lands begin assimilating into the Confede racy. -The SS forces are adopted by virtually every state in the CSA with only missour

i being the last holdout by 1880. The CS federal government creates a terretoria l SS force to bring order to the terretories before 1872. The CSA lags in development. With a cash crop like cotten importation is cheape r than development and more profitable. The opening up of Texas to large scale plantations (called latifundia) working both cotton and soon oil, gives slavery a longer lease on life. Increasingly however the CSA is isolated internationall y. Brazil also becomes isolated because of slavery and the 2 nations become clos er. Increasingly anti-slavery attitudes in the UK and US worsen the CSA position . In the CSA some attempts are made to industrialize, but mainly with black slav e labor. The small white middle class is bought off with moderate subsidies and a clear slave owning ruling class is emerging. While still republican in form the CSA is barely democratic in nature. Increasing numbers of whites are employ ed in internal security duty as the restive black population stages some minor r evolts. As each is ruthlessly crushed and harsher treatments imposed another ca dre of 'revolutionary' slaves is created. Covert support by non-govermental orga nizations in Europe and the USA is discovered and the CSA moves towards a more i solationist policy. -Slavery begins to move out of the plantation and into industry. Unfortunately i t can not compete effectively with free labor in the world market. In order to presereve its own native industry the CSA erects high tariff walls. This allows Southern Slave industry to compete against cheap US and UK profits. To some ex tent this is fueling the first real internal opposition to slavery in the South, particularly in the upper South. Here the small middle and industrial class is in fierce competition with the slave workers. The resent the absence of taxati on of slave property and the domination of the slave holders in government. Agi tation for limitation of the competition between white (free) and black (slave) labor grows heated. -The invention of the telephone (1876) by Alexander Graham Bell. -The light bulb was invented. -The phonograph is invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison. -Ludwig Boltzmann's statistical definition of thermodynamic entropy 1871-US adopts Prussian General Staff system. A se ries of laws stripping rights from nonwhite(read: mexicans who don't own any lan d whatsoever) are passed. anyone of ANY african descent whose not a slave is ree nslaved. . This also leads in an expansion of the slave population and slavery b egins spreading into the new mexican lands... 1872-1900- Widespread labor unrest in US; Industrial development continues unaba ted. Tariff walls remain high, encouraging domestic production. U.S. becomes wor ld's largest producer of steel by 1900. - The Confeder 1872-the military Military Technology Review Board,US military, naval reform beg ins. Army strength set at 400,000. His Presidency shall be marked by motions to overturn all of Lee's and Lo ngstreet's efforts save for the strengthening of army and navy. Civil rights are curtailed, legal abuse of blacks both free and slave increases, and the gap bet ween rich and poor grows wider. -North Carolina passes a law enslaving all free blacks within its borders. (Simi

lar laws had been passed in other states as early as 1865 (in Texas) without dif ficulty, but always in states with little or no Union occupation during the war. ) The attempt to enforce the law leads to a general slave uprising. Order is res tored within the year, as Forrest orders the hanging of thousands of free blacks and a general police state throughout the Confederacy. Whites object to the res trictions on travel which are considered necessary to protect against future upr isings. Education of blacks is again outlawed, and Northern 'missionary teachers ' are expelled from the Confederacy. -8/12/1873- Capitol building dome in Washington, D.C., is completed. The Confede racy had given the project a lower priority than the US did. 1874- As a nationalistic measure designed to help differentiate the US from CS the Confederate military adopts the confederate Salute instead of using the trad itional military salute. The confederate salute is the right arm raised up with the palm being flat and facing the front. -the CSA begins building a canal in nicaragua. Thanks to yellow fever making it dangerous we see slaves who rebel being brought there and worked to death.. 1875- CSA President Rhett and Congress secretly authorize a build-up of ironclad s and wooden vessels, in the face of the growing militarism of the United States . - The Opra Garnier is completed in Paris. -The State governments begin buying up slaves from failing plantations and emplo ying them for free in building roads and railroads. This is the first incidence of government owned slaves. 1876-US protest CSA actions in northern mexico in regards to the status of the m exicans there. CSA imposes heavy taxes on US Mississippi River traffic. "Tempor ary revenue" tariffs placed on goods from the US by the CS government. The Unite d states government responts in kind. US forced to build more extensive rail net in midwest to carry exports to Lake River Ports. The short 15 year honeymoon of decent relationships after secession is over. Both nations begin preparing for war against the other(well more focused on each other as a priority target, they had been preparing before). -Both the union and confederacy celebrate the Centenial. The centennial occasion doesn't help union and confederate relations at all. It merely makes them worse . -Various mine owners in the confederacy begin using slaves for mining. The usage of slaves as miners in appalachia canuses many of the mountain whites to leave. . -7/1/1876- "Centralization in the defense of slavery is no vice" - Confederate P resident Forrest -8/1/1876- After confe 1877- CSA establishes close commerical relationship with UK. RN is granted perm anent 99 year leases at Key West and Mobile. US protest, slightly larger USN is built. -Widespread labor violence. A continent-wide railroad strike provokes riots in N ew York City, Monterrey, Managua, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Atlanta and Sacramento. A coal strike leads to violence in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tenn essee. The Grange leads a farmer's strike against the large landowners in Texas and the CSA. Militias and police meet much of this unrest with heavy blows. -3/4/1877- The Confederacy forced to sign a humiliating peace treaty; the treaty of cleveland: missouri, kentucky, west virginia, maryland, delaware, washington DC and nothern virginia are ceded to the US, the confederacy is to recognize un ited states rule over baja california/indian territory/new mexico. The only brig ht spot in the treaty is the union recognizing the confederacy for the first tim e(USA/CSA) -8/1/1877- The Citizenship act is passed: it gives american citizenship to all p eople to all people living in the US regardless of they're in a state or territo

ry. IT also removes all race-based barriers to naturalization(United States) 1878- Haitian protecterate annexed by the US. -Constitution amendment to make electoral college victory dependent on having th e most electoral votes and not a majority number. This is done to stop complaint s that Tilden's election wasn't legal.(United States) 1879- CSA enacts several draconian anti-Negro laws as the One Nation Party run o n a platform of bwhite superiority and vengence. Most moderates in CSA silenced by the paramilitary squads of the One Nation party(). Abolitionism isn't even openly discussed anywhere in the CSA. 1880's-An interesting social split is further dividing the nations. In the US w ith its small black population and bitter feelings over secession the black has gained more rapid acceptance and assimilation. Racism is Identified with the ha ted (in some quarters) political-social system of the CSA. Most overt discrimin ation ends in the New England and Upper West by the late 1800s. Haiti/Dominicana enjoy a Romantic Projection (based on the writings of the Three Great late 19th Century American Novalist - Douglas, Inverness and Cranston). Also the higher p roportion of non WASP immigrants into the US has created a more diverse mix. In the CSA the opposite effect has occurred. Social and Political Darwinism (but w ith no religious acceptance) has set the CSA on a severe Racist path. With no r estraining hand and the fear of revolt the Blacks and Indians are viewed with ov ert contempt and covert fear. - The CSA now is the first modern police state, based on racial politics. The b ulk of the agricultural and industrial work is done by slaves (although many are employed in domestic/servent roles). A small number of families control the n ation. The white(read: landowning) mexicans in the confederate empires become mo re assimilated. 1880's- In the upper South (Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina and Virginia) th e free labor movement is gaining a political voice. In response some slaves are moved South (accelerating the black reverse migration away from the upper South ) and a number of instances of white burning black factories/mills. Social unres t in particularly acute in the mountain sections of these stateswhich pay a high er per capita tax rate and recieve little benefit. -Development and commercial production of electric lighting -Development and commercial production of gasoline-powered automobile by Karl Be nz, Gottlieb Daimler and Maybach -First commercial production and sales of phonographs and phonograph recordings. -First steel frame construction (yiia) "sky-scrapers" 1880- USA annexes several Pacific Islands. The closure of the Mississippi hurts the Mid western farmers who have to ship through the Lakes and Erie to the Eastern ports . 1886- The CSA begins a state (federal) industrialization policy and cracks down hard on rebellion and dissidence. Anyone suspected of abolitionist beliefs is e ncouraged to leave or imprisoned. A national SS force is created but the state S S forces remain in existence. The general attitude of the CSA is one of paranoia and fear. 1887- After massive labor unrest and riots in many major cities moderate Social reforms instituted by a coalition off moderate republicans and members of the ne wly formed Liberal Party. These reforms include a national pension, limited nati onal health insurance and other measures that resemble Bismarkian germany's safe ty net. These reforms cause the socialist party which was gaining strengh to los e most of its support. 1889-Depression in US continues. Granger Farm Strike accompanied by General Stri ke by American Federation of Labor paralyzes US, Martial Law declared in several states. -The CSA finishes the Nicaraguan Canal which had been being built since 1865. 1890's- The 1890s are sometimes referred to as the "Mauve Decade," because Willi am Henry Perkin's aniline dye allowed the widespread use of that colour in fashi on, and also as the "Gay Nineties", under the then-current usage of the word "ga y" which referred simply to merriment and frivolity, with no connotation of homo sexuality as in current-day usage. - The emergence of 'scientific' slavery begins. Corporate ownership of slaves, in particular breeder slaves, is affirmed by the CSA supreme Court, which ironic ally recognizes Corporations as 'persons' entitled to the full rights of CSA cit izenship. The decline of cotton prices is putting a squeeze on slavery in the CS A. The cost of slavery is also rising particularly on the frontier and in the n ew territories. In Cuba and North Mexico there is particular unrest as high mili tary expenditures are necessary to suppress 'wild' populations (this is much lik e the USA pacification of the West). On the US-CS frontier there is a 'leakage' problem of slave labor that necessitates a fortified border and greater internal control. Many whites in the mountain areas are actually helping blacks escape to cut down on the competition in labor and attack the planter class. -Lynchings of African Americans in the Confederated States average 350 per year. -Early commercial production of automobiles. -H. G. Wells creates modern science fiction with his book The War of the Worlds. 1890-The US signs a treaty of alliance with the Japanese Empire. The date palm is also introduced to the un ion around this timeframe. 18971900s - The free labor whites win control of the Northern tier of the CSA, they impose taxes on slave labor accelerating the flight of slave labor into the deep South. This consolidates free labor power in the Northern CSA and reinforces s lave labor in the deep South. A clear expection is the use of domestic and agri cultural slaves which continue all over the CSA. nstitutionally Corporate Slaves are creating a minor economic niche because of their ability to be shifted to a nd from market. Euthenasia of poor quality slaves becomes a open practice. - Emergence of Cubist and Futurist art -Lawrence Hargrave makes the first stable wing design for a heavier-than-air air craft -Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first documented flight in a powered heavier -than-air aircraft -Mass production of automobile -Wide popularity of home phonograph 1900-The 1900 US census and reapportionment of representatives gives the new eng land/rustbelt states more influence in the government. -7/4/1900- Santo Domingo is given statehood(United States) 1901- Henry Ford invents the massproduced car as OTL only its a steamcar instead . 1902- Narrowly avoiding a vote for total prohibition in the United States. The conservat ive lifestyles during the first half of the decade, as well as the legacy of mil itary alliances, would forever be changed by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austrian throne, on 28 June 1914.
