ME Project Title: Processing and Characterization of Silicon Carbide Reinforced Functionally Graded Aluminium Matrix Composites using Centrifugal Casting. (Carried out at National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Trivandrum)
Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) are one of the potential and advanced class of engineering materials in which the composition and structure are intentionally varied in a specific direction to meet the functional requirements. Aluminium A356 alloy reinforced with 10% SiC particles were synthesized using the stir casting method. Functionally graded rings and cylinders were fabricated using the vertical centrifugal casting system, in which the molten composite liquid at 740 o C was poured in to centrifugal mould rotating at 1100 rpm. Microstructural evaluation and mechanical testing was done to evaluate the properties. The microstructure and the hardness values show the gradation of SiC particles towards the outer periphery. The maximum volume fraction observed in the outer periphery of the functionally graded components is around 45%. The functionally graded components can be used in various automotive applications like piston, piston rings, cylinder liners, brake disks, clutch housings, etc.

BE Project Title: Design and Fabrication of Four Wheel Steering Mechanism for Automobiles. Four wheel steering mechanism, provide a means to actively steer the rear wheels during turning manoeuvres. The rear wheels turn either in left or right according to the speed and direction to turn of the front wheels. The direction and speed sensors will give the signals to the control unit and at low speed the rear wheels steer opposite to the direction of the front wheels and at high speed the rear wheels steer same direction as that of the front wheels. The maximum steering angle of the rear wheels are five degrees to either left or right be the optimally effective and natural to human sensitivity. The four wheel steering system will gives superior cornering stability, improved steering responsiveness and precision at low speeds, and straight line stability, rapid lane-changing manoeuvres at high speeds.
