How can you support

CFL?
Support a child
Per child for a year – Rs. 8000

Support educational material
The following are the expenses that we
incur on educational material per annum
for a group of 40-45 children. Choose to
buy or fund any or all of the following:
Text and reference books – Rs. 8000
Art and Craft material – Rs. 4000
Notebooks – Rs. 4000
Pencils and erasers – Rs. 3000
Sponsor educational trips
Per child for one trip – Rs. 1750
Support infrastructure development-
Needed up to Rs. 300,000
CFL plans to have a kitchen built on the
campus so that the mid-day meals can be
cooked in-house. We also plan to
introduce cooking as a part of our
curriculum.
We are currently short of classrooms and
need to add at least two (temporary)
classrooms or one hall.
What is Centre for Learning (CFL)?
Established in 1982, CFL is an alternative education centre based in Secunderabad.
CFL strives to understand, in theoretical and practical terms, what education means as
distinct from schooling and to discover how to educate without schooling. CFL attempts to
see how education can empower individuals and under-privileged communities rather
than make them unwitting collaborators towards their own exploitation.
Why is CFL needed?
CFL attempts to provide an alternative to formal
mainstream schools working towards education as
distinct from schooling. We evaluate educational
achievement in qualitative rather than quantitative
terms. Education at CFL is participative and
collaborative learning in a supportive ambience
free-of-fear and coercion.
The continuum of plush business houses with
ornate glass façades and luxury apartments
steeped in every conceivable comfort is punctuated
by an urban squalor, home to a sizeable human
population, who either lost their lands to the
expanding city or has been forced to migrate from
villages in search of employment.
These communities have little or no access to
education, health and other basic amenities such as
water, housing or sanitation that any modern day
citizen of the world takes for granted. The centre
works with both ends of the economic spectrum and
all the bands between.

How can you support
CFL?
Building a Corpus
Building a sound corpus would go a long
way in helping CFL become self-
sustaining and will help take care of core
expenses even during periods when
funding is not available.
Contributions in kind
Material like books, stationery, children’s
clothes (sparingly used), board games,
etc., will be gladly accepted.
Should you like to know more about any
of our plans or the budget, CFL would be
happy to provide you that.

What does CFL do?
Alternative education centre - With its
primary focus on quality education, CFL
currently has 75 children under the care of 7
teachers.
At any given time about 60% of the children are
from the disadvantaged sections and hence the
strong need for CFL to be supported by
individuals and institutions with a strong belief
in the need for quality education.
CFL also undertakes teacher professional
development, curriculum planning, material
development for its own needs and for other
organizations upon request.
Public education - through meetings at CFL
and participation in different forums and
publications, we hope to engage people on
issues related to education, parenting, culture,
social-economic injustice, consumerism and
ecology.
Edu-Care - CFL’s publication to provide a
forum for all those interested to have a
dialogue and to share their thoughts on making
the education system more meaningful.
All donations to CFL are income tax deductible under Section 80G.
Centre for Learning is registered under the ‘Foreign Contribution Regulation Act’.
What does CFL stand for?
An ‘inclusive’ space – quality education must
not be restricted to exclusive private spaces
accessible only to the privileged. We believe
that learning spaces should be inclusive and
hence, in addition to children from middle and
upper middle class families, the centre has a
special commitment to children from under-
privileged groups.
Education for children from these groups is
made available at a subsidized rate. Girls are
given higher support to encourage them to
come to the centre.
Learning that is personally meaningful and
fun – Our goal is to create an environment
where learning is personally meaningful and
relevant. Hence, the whole learning process
becomes joyful for the learner rather than a
boring chore aimed at just passing exams.
Independent learning and critical thinking -
Learners are encouraged to reason and think
independently and learn through discovery and
discussions, and connect with real-life
experiences rather than just receive packaged
knowledge passively from their teachers.
Ample opportunities to foster this are provided
through democratic spaces for discussions with
children and adults as peers, opportunities for
self-reflection through art, writing and craft, etc.
Building sensitivity to social and
environmental issues - Children are made
aware of environmental, social and ethical
issues and are encouraged to think about them
and discuss them.
Broad curriculum - Art, craft, music and
drama are given equal importance for building
confidence, fostering cognitive development,
creativity and expression, and enriching the
learners’ aesthetic sense.
