Objective: Become aware of own language.


Instructions:

a. Read the text Culture and the 'good teacher' in the English Language classroom written by Colin Sowden, which is found on Documents. b. Read is as many times as necessary to gain a good understanding of its content and ideas. c. Put the text away and audio record yourself retelling the text in your own words; use Audacity to record your voice. d. After you audio record yourself, transcribe your narrative of the text on a MS Word file. e. Analyze your narrative and identify language related problems. You must focus on the following issues: Phonology Lexical Grammar f. Pay attention to difficulties you had to express ideas, clarity of ideas etc. g. Highlight or underline such problems in the text. h. Add comments in Green Arial size 10 font why you think you had those problems. i. Write an 80 word Report point out the problems you encountered. Informed eclectisism: the best approach Be guided on how learners should learn (if we dont know how to teach) -learner training; self-directed learning and; S centered approach. Nowadays the term culture is used more broadly. Teachers must work with the cultures they encounter. (adapt teaching styles according to local cultures). Ts must be aware of their own culture as well. (specially attitudes and practices as individuals.) BELIEFS, ASSUMPTIONS, KNOWLEDGE Despite that many methods for ESL teaching have been developed throughout the years, informed eclecticism seems to be the most promising approach so far and the interest towards learner differences has also increased lately. This involves foreign ESL teachers in a critical way since their own culture and teaching styles have to deal with diversities of external cultures such as international education and government policies, so they must have a better understanding on how all those cultures influence the Ss attitude and study styles. Another important thing is that Ts have to be aware of their own culture that they bring to the classroom. That is, their attitudes and practices as individuals because their awareness of their own cultures will partially determine how the classes designed will be delivered. The proper interaction of the Ss and Ts culture along with the culture of the target language gives birth to a third one that stamps the Ts and Ss cultures on the target language. So, in order to achieve true critical cultural awareness and self-reflection, inter-cultural courses have been developed for Ts and Ss but the author is convinced that the best thing to do is simply to experience the culture itself because there are competences that can be developed only through experience. Finally, he emphasizes that the T personal growth and expertise must go hand in hand.

The author talks about the impact of culture in ESL teaching. He points out that traditional and new methods have not demonstrated yet that theres no best way to teach ESL. This is why teachers have better decided to focus on how Ss learn. First, he explains why culture is important in this shift and gives a broad definition and examples of the term and how foreign or local ESL teachers must adapt to all the variety of cultures that affect Ss learning process. He also highlights that those Ts must be aware of their own cultures that bring to classrooms, referring to their attitudes and practices as individuals because those affect the way language is delivered. This effective delivery of social language creates a third culture based on the Ts and Ss needs and priorities. Then he explains that courses for critical cultural awarness have been developed but he points out that full familiarity of the culture is mainly acquired by experiencing the culture itself. The last thing he points out is that Ts need to accept their practice as an art and not merely as a science and that personal growth has much to do with experience.
