VSL CHAMPIONSHIP
The VSL Mariners defeated the VSL Cubs 11-8 in 12 innings yesterday to win the 2013 VSL
Championship 2-0. It was the VSL Mariners 2nd VSL Championship (also 2002). Team finished
runner-up in the Championship game in 2012, 2010, 2008 and 2005.
Offensive Leaders
INF/OF Yordi Calderon hit .343 (82x239) with 68 runs scored, 20 doubles, 3 triples, 11 home runs
and 42 RBI in 68 games. He led VSL in on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.590),
runs scored, (68) and extra-base hits (34), while also ranking T1st in games (68), 2nd in hits,
doubles, home runs and average and T4th in RBI. Teammate INF/OF Gianfranco Wawoe hit .328
(80x244) with 63 runs scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 30 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 68
games with the VSL Mariners. Wawoe ranked amongst the league leaders in nearly every offensive
category, including T1st in games played, 2nd in on-base percentage (.415) and runs scored, 3rd in
hits and stolen bases, 4th in doubles and at-bats, T4th in extra-base hits (29) and 5th in average.
Starters Kevin Gadea and Pablo Lopez have combined to go 16-2 with a 2.61 ERA (40 ER, 138.0
IP) in 26 starts. Gadea went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA (21 ER, 71.1 IP) in 14 starts. He finished tied for
the VSL league lead in wins and starters, while finishing 2nd in innings pitched and 5th in ERA.
Lopez finished 2nd in the league in WHIP (0.93) and opponent average (.209) and 4th in ERA
(2.57) and wins (7). Overall he went 7-1 with a 2.57 ERA (19 ER, 66.2 IP) in 12 starts. RH Hector
Hidalgo led the team with 7 saves, while RH Jonathan Jimenez and RH Osmel Morales each
recorded 5 saves. Despite being used primarily as a reliever, Morales finished 2nd in the VSL in
strikeouts, striking out 66 batters in 53.1 innings
RECAP: CF Abraham Almonte hit a 2-out single in the top of the 12th innings scoring SS Carlos
Triunfel as Tacoma defeated Round round 4-3 on Tuesday night. The Rainiers scored a run in the
top of the 9th inning on a fielding error that tied the game 3-3 and sent it to extra innings. Almonte
(3x5, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and SS Carlos Triunfel (3x6, R) each recorded 3 hits, while 3B Nate
Tenbrink (2x5, BB) recorded the teams only other multi-hit game. Starter Andrew Carraway
(5.0,4,3,3,7,2,HR) allowed a season-high 7 walks, but did not figure into the decision. RH Jonathan
Arias (2.0,0,0,0,2,1), RH Logan Bawcom (2.0,2,0,0,0,2), RH Josh Kinney (1.0,0,0,0,1,1) and LH
Bobby LaFromboise (2.0,1,0,0,0,3) combined to strikeout 7 batters over 8.0 scoreless innings in
relief. LaFromboise earned his 6th win of the season after tossing a scoreless 11th and 12th
innings.
REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Franklin Gutierrez began his 4th rehabilitation assignment with
Tacoma on Aug. 11. He had a day off yesterday. Overall he is batting .221 (36x163) with 22 runs
scored, 12 doubles, 3 home runs, 25 RBI, 11 walks and 4 stolen bases in 38 games with AAA
Tacoma. Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day DL on June 25 with a strained right hamstring. He
appeared in 2 games (June 22-23) after being activated from the disabled list on June 22. Gutierrez
was on the disabled list from April 23-June 21 with the same injury (right hamstring strain).
Gutierrez was batting .267 (15x60) with 8 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5 home runs (3 leadoff HR) and
11 RBI in 18 games (15 GS in CF) this season for Seattle. This is the 6th trip to the DL for Gutierrez
since the start of the 2011 season.
OF NOTE: INF Carlos Triunfel currently has a 9-game hit streak, batting .429 (15x35) with 7 runs
scored, 3 doubles, 3 RBI, 1 walk and 1 stolen base. INF Ty Kelly has hit safely in 24 of 35 games
(w/AB) with 11 multi-hit games since being acquired, while reaching base safely via a hit or walk in
32 games. Since July 2, he is batting .313 (42x134) with 21 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 home runs,
11 RBI, 29 walks and 2 stolen bases in 36 game. INF Nate Tenbrink is batting .333 (13x39) with 3
runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 4 walks in 10 games in August. RHP Taijuan
Walker tossed 14.0 scoreless innings over his first 3 AAA starts, before allowing a solo home run in
the 5th inning on July 7 at Salt Lake. Overall he is 3-2 with a 3.73 ERA (17 ER, 41.0 IP) in 8 starts
with Tacoma. Walker is currently the youngest player in the PCL this season and 2nd-youngest in
Triple-A. He made his Triple-A debut vs. Fresno on June 25 at Cheney Stadium (W, 6.0,3,0,0,2,4).
Walker is the youngest Rainiers pitcher to make his Triple-A debut since a 19-year-old Felix
Hernandez on April 8, 2005 at Fresno.

Tuesday night. Hicks (2x5, R, SB) recorded the teams only multi-hit game, while 2B Chris Taylor (1x7), 3B Ramon Morla (1x6, 2B), CF
Denny Almonte (1x5, BB), RF Jabari Blash (1x5, R, HR, RBI, BB) and SS Gabriel Noriega (1x6) each recorded 1 of the Generals 7 hits.
Blash hit his 2nd home run with Jackson with a solo blast with 2 outs in the 2nd inning to give the Generals an early 1-0 lead. Starter
Jimmy Gillheeney (6.0,3,0,0,4,4) allowed 3 hits in 6.0 scoreless inning, but did not figure into the decision. LH Nick Hill (1.0,2,1,1,0,2)

the Generals after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings.
OF NOTE: OF Julio Morban has hit safely in 12 of his last 15 games, batting .333 (18x54) with 12 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 1
home run, 8 RBI, 6 walks and 3 stolen base. INF Chris Taylor is batting .314 (16x51) with 10 runs scored, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 RBI, 3
walks and 4 stolen bases in 12 games in August. After allowing 5 runs over his first 6 appearances of the season, RH Carson Smith has
allowed only 5 earned runs over his last 33 relief appearances. During this stretch he is 0-1 with 8 saves and a 1.16 ERA (5 ER, 38.2 IP).
Since April 22, Smith has lowered his ERA from 8.44 to 2.05. Smith has struck out at least 1 batter in 34 of 39 games (62 strikeouts). LH
Kyle Hunter has held oppoents scoreless in 25 of 30 appearances this season. Overall he is 3-0 with 1 save and a 1.07 ERA (6 ER, 50.2
IP). He has limited opponents to a .219 (41x187), while walking 12 and striking out 36. RH Stephen Kohlscheen has allowed only 2
earned runs over his last 23.0 innings (0.78 ERA), including holding opponents scoreless over the last 5.0 innings in relief. During this 13game stretch (since June 26), he is 3-0 while lowering his season ERA from 3.60 to 2.48.

RECAP: Starter Stephen Landazuri struck out a career-high 12 batters in 6.2 innings to lead High Desert to a 10-1 win over Rancho
Cucamonga on Tuesday night. Landazuri (6.2,3,1,1,2,12,WP) recorded his 5th win of the season after allowing only 1 run on 3 hits in 6.2
innings. His 12 strikeouts set a career-high (previous: 9, 2x: last: 5/25/13 vs. San Jose), while becoming only the 2nd Mariners farmhand to
strikeout 12 in a game this season (also: Taijuan Walker, 6/20/13 vs Mobile w/AA Jackson). He is one of only 22 minor league pitchers to
strikeout at least 12 in a single game this season. RH Seon-Gi Kim (1.1,0,0,0,1,1) and LH Bobby Shore (1.0,0,0,0,0,2) combined to
strikeout 3 batters over the final 2.1 innings in relief to secure the win. CF Jamal Austin (2x3, 3 R, BB, SB), SS Ketel Marte (3x5, 2 R,
SB), RF Kevin Rivers (3x5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), 3B Patrick Kivlehan (1x5, R, 2B, 2 RBI), and 1B Steven Proscia (2x4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2
RBI, HB), the Mavericks 1-5 hitters, combined to go 11-for-24 with 10 runs scored, 5 extra-base hits (3-2B, 2-HR) and 8 RBI. 2B Anthony
Phillips (2x3, BB) was the only other player in the Mavericks lineup to record a hit.
OF NOTE: INF Patrick Kivlehan has hit safely in the last 17 games, batting .420 (29x69) with 18 runs scored, 6 doubles, 5 home runs, 22
RBI, 7 walks and 3 stolen bases. His 17-game hit streak is currently the longest active streak in the California League, while T5th-longest in
the league this season. Kivlehan has recorded 21 RBI in 11 games in August, which currently leads all minor league players in the month
of August. It is the 3rd longest streak by a Mavericks player this season (21-INF Ji-Man Choi, 4/27-5/22 & INF Anthony Phillips (4/11-5/3).
INF OF Jamal Austin has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .422 (27x64) with 18 runs scored, 2 double, 1 triple, 6 RBI, 6 walks
and 7 stolen bases. He has hit safely in 28 of his last 34 games, batting .377 (52x138) with 34 runs scored, 6 doubles, 5 triples, 22 RBI, 13
walks and 12 stolen bases. Since July 4, his .377 average ranks 2nd in the California League. OF Kevin Rivers has hit safely in 14 of his
last 16 games, batting .418 (28x67) with 14 runs scored, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 19 RBI and 7 walks. Since July 14, Rivers is
batting .390 (39x100) with 19 runs scored, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 23 RBI and 10 walks in 25 games. INF Ketel Marte recorded
went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 1 stolen base in his debut with High Desert on August 14 at Rancho Cucamonga. Dating back to July
22 with Clinton, Marte has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games with an at-bat, batting .476 (40x84) with 14 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples,
10 RBI, 5 walks and 5 stolen bases. During this 20-game stretch, Marte has led all minor league players in average and hits.
KIVLEHAN NAMED CALIFORNIA PLAYER OF THE WEEK: 3B Patrick Kivlehan was named California Player of the Week, August 511. Kivlehan hit safely in all 6 games he appeared during the week, batting .520 (13x25) with 8 runs scored, 6 extra-base hits (3-2B, 3-HR),
16 RBI and 3 walks. He drove in 11 of his 16 RBI in back-to-back games, Aug. 8-9. His 16 RBI led all MiL players during the week.
6 PACK: OF Nate Melendres (6x8, 5 R, 2B, 2 RBI) went 6-for-8 with 5 runs scored 2 doubles and 2 RBI on Aug. 9 vs. Lancaster. He is
one of only 8 minor league players to record at 6 hits in a game this season, includuing 3 Mariners farmhands, joining Rainiers outfielders
Abraham Almonte (6x6, 4 R, 2 RBI, BB 5/29/13 at Colorado Springs) in the PCL and Carlos Peguero (6x7, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI
7/26/13 at Reno) in the PCL, Jose Lopez in the Mexican League (6x6, 3 R, 2 RBI 7/28/13 vs. Laguna) Alan Sanchez of Oaxaca in the
Mexican League (6x8, 5 R, 2 RBI, BB - 5/9/13 vs. Carmen), Moises Sierra with Buffalo in the International League (6x6, 5 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI
- 4/18/13 at Syracuse), Alfredo Despaigne with Campeche in the Mexican League (6x6, 4 R, HR, RBI - 7/03/2013 at Saltillo) and Willy
Garcia with Bradenton in the Florida State League (6x6, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI at St. Lucie - 6/24/2013). Almonte is the first PCL player to record 6
hits in a game since Bryan Anderson went 6-for-6 against Tucson on May 24, 2012.
30/30: The Mavericks recorded 30 hits and scored 30 runs en route to a 30-8 win over Lancaster on August 9. The Mavericks recorded at
scored 10 runs in the first and 2nd innings, while recording at least 2 hits in 4 additional innings. The 30 run fell short of the California
League record for most runs by one team in a game, as Fresno scored 34 against Ventura on May 23, 1947. The highest scoring game in
Cal League history took place at Stater Bros. Stadium on June 28, 2009, with Lake Elsinore defeating High Desert 33-18.
Since 2005, the Mavericks are the 6th minor league team to score at least 25 runs and record at least 30 hits in a game. The Mavericks
join the Tacoma Rainiers in the PCL (6/19/13 at Colorado Springs, 25 runs, 30 hits), the Visalia Rawhide in the California League (5/15/12
at High Desert, 26 runs, 31 hits), Lake Elsinore in the California League (6/28/09 at High Desert, 33 runs, 32 hits), Vaqueros Laguna in
the Mexican League (7/5/08 at Pericos de Puebla, 30 runs, 30 hits) and Diablos Rojos del Mexico in the Mexican League (4/3/07 vs. Potros
de Tijuana, 26 runs, 31 hits) as the only minor league teams to accomplish this feat in the last 8 seasons.

walks and 1 stolen base in 10 games in the month of August. C Tyler Marlette has hit safely in his last 12 games with 6 multi-hit contests,
batting .388 (19x49) with 6 runs scored, 5 doubles, 3 RBI, 4 walks and 2 stolen bases. Tim Lopes has hit safely in 11 of his last 15 games,

PETERSON NAMED MIDWEST LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: INF D.J. Peterson was name Midwest League Player of the Week,
August 5-11. Peterson hit safely in 6 of 7 games during the, batting .429 (12x28) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI, 3
walks and 1 stolen base. Entering last week, Peterson was batting .195 (8x41) with 6 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs and 6
RBI. Overall he is batting .303 (54x178) with 32 runs scored, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 12 home runs, 39 RBI and 18 walks in 46 games
combined between Everett and Clinton. Despite only appearing in 46 games, Peterson currently ranks T9th in the Mariners organization
with 12 home runs.

NORTHWEST LEAGUE HR DERBY: Sean Dwyer of the Tri-City Dust Devils won the 2013 NWL Home Run Derby, presented by Safeco
Insurance. The lefty outfielder hit three homers in the first round and clubbed two in the second to win the event, which was part of All-Star
festivities at Everett Memorial Stadium Tuesday. Phillips Castillo of the host Everett AquaSox came in second and Hunter Renfroe of the
Eugene Emeralds was third. The other contestants in the 2013 Home Run Derby were Hillsboro's Yogey Perez-Ramos, Vancouver's L.B.
Dantzler, and Eugene's Trae Santos, who each hit one homer, as well as Everett's Justin Seager and Salem-Keizer's Sam Eberle, who
did not go yard in the first round.
