AT&T brings 4G speed to cell service

AT&T celebrated its introduction of new high-speed cellular service to Lawton on Tuesday, with company officials promising it will make a difference in how local residents use cell service personally and for business. grades the past five years, "more capital investment than any other American company, wireless or otherwise." It has invested $820 million in Oklahoma alone over the last 31/2 years. Gray said 70 to 75 percent of Oklahomans now have access to the 4G LTE technology, and that number will rise to 90 percent or so by the end of the year. By the end of next year, he said, every AT&T cell site in the state will have the technology. Many Southwest Oklahoma communities now have 4G LTE service, including Lawton,
Cache, Cement, Chickasha, Elgin, Fletcher, Geronimo, Duncan, Marlow and Walters. Gray said

service is available along the Interstate 44 corridor, and it will be expanding over the next year or so. He said Altus now has 2G service and that will be upgraded to 3G by the end of the month, and eventually will be upgraded to 4G.

Schools open doors

`Meet and greets' set this week across Lawton
Lawton Public Schools invites students and parents to gear up for the new school year at a series of special meetings this week at its elementary schools. Just an hour can make a big difference The events, commonly called "meet and greets" or "back to school nights," usually last about an hour and give parents and students the chance to find classrooms, meet teachers and stow supplies in preparation for the start of school Friday. Four local schools will hold events tonight. Leading off the group is Edison Elementary, which will welcome students beginning at 5 p.m. Close behind will be
Crosby Park, Pioneer Park and Woodland Hills elementaries, scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Other schools making plans Thursday is the big day for the remainder of Lawton's elementary schools. John Adams, Brockland and Geronimo Road schools start their sessions at 5 p.m. Almor West, Cleveland, Eisenhower, Pat Henry, Lincoln, Ridgecrest, Sheridan Road, B.C. Swinney, Sullivan Village, Washington, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools will begin their sessions at 5:30 p.m. Schools planning 6 p.m. events are Hugh Bish, Carriage Hills and Andrew Jackson.

Grant Chapel fundraiser barbecue dinner Thursday

The men of Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church will have a barbecue dinner fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the church, 1628 SW McKinley. The barbecue rib or brisket dinner, available for an $8 donation per plate, will include baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, peach cobbler and bread. Call 353-2229.

Emergency personnel clean up after an accident Monday night involving a Lawton Police Department patrol unit. Investigators say an officer was crossing the intersection at Northwest 4th Street and Gore Boulevard around 10:40 p.m. when another vehicle turned onto Gore Boulevard and struck the side of the patrol unit. The officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. The driver of the other vehicle did not have a license.
