Feasts of the Season

Spring 2013

Feasts of Spring
April 8 May 9 or 12 May 19 May 26 May 31 June 2 June 7 The Annunciation On this day we celebrate the appearance of the angel Gabriel to Mary to announce that God wanted her to be the mother of Jesus. We also celebrate Marys response: Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word (Luke 1:38). The feast of the Annunciation is normally celebrated on March 25, but since March 25 falls on the Monday of Holy Week this year, the feast has been moved to April 8. See Luke 2:37-41. The Ascension This solemnity celebrates Jesus return to the Father. As he leaves, he tells his followers to spread his message to all nationsa command he wants us to fulfill today. In most areas this feast is observed on the 7th Sunday of Easter, this year May 12. The provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Omaha, and Philadelphia have, however, retained the traditional Ascension Thursday on May 9, which remains a holy day of obligation. Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus followers, which changed fearful people into brave proclaimers of the message of the risen Jesus. On this, the birthday of the Church, the disciples baptized 3,000 new Christians. The Most Holy Trinity This feast honors the fact that there are Three PersonsFather, Son, and Holy Spiritin one God. This truth was revealed to us by Jesus, but it is still called a mystery because our human minds are not capable of completely understanding the Holy Trinity. The Visitation When Mary learned that her cousin Elizabeth was also expecting a child, she walked many miles to visit her. Elizabeths child was John the Baptist. Mary went the extra mile to help Elizabeth. If you need Marys help, she would be willing to go the extra mile to help you, her child. All you need to do is ask. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi in Latin). This feast celebrates Jesus presence with his people in the Holy Eucharist. The site of the city of Corpus Christi, Texas, was selected by Spanish explorers on this feast day. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus This solemnity celebrates the fact that Jesus loves us with the warmth and devotion of a human heart like ours. But, being divine as well as human, he is not limited in the love he extends to each of us.
