Background
With sales of around EUR 37 billion and more than 10,000 stores in Germany, the EDEKA Group is the number one player in the German retail food trade. Its core activity is the supermarket and hypermarket business, which is managed by more than 4,800 independent retailers.

shelves and merchandise in the best way possible. Projectors with SDW-T lamps and without colour filters illuminate the fresh produce ina way that preserves vitamins. In the pharmacy department, Magneos projectors create special lighting accents, highlighting photographs above the shelves. The versatile Magneos projectors, which are 10% more efficient than conventional lighting, can be combined with various reflectors. In the bakery section, reflectors in a gold and champagne shade were chosen. These warm colours are particularly good at emphasising the golden brown colours of baked produce and make them look fresh and crispy, says Wolf Tissler of Edeka.

The challenge
The remit for the lighting designers was to create a comfortable, relaxed shopping atmosphere, with pleasant contrasts and warm light. Particular attention was devoted to product presentation in the fresh-food section, where fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, meat and baked produce should appear natural and appetising.

The solution
A lighting concept was developed which satisfies the different requirements within a supermarket. The basic lighting in the entrance area is provided by Garnea pendant luminaires. Wall-mounted ambercoloured LEDline2 luminaires deliver colourful wall-washing effects, while Spot LED projectors direct attention to the photos and other eye-catching features. The general lighting is provided by Maxos light-lines. The main aisles are equipped with Garnea pendant luminaires with double-asymmetric optics and MASTERColour CDM-T Elite lamps to illuminate the

Benefits
The new lighting is rich in contrasts and creates areas with different brightness levels and different accents. Improved colour rendering ensures optimal product presentation. The overall lighting ambience has a pleasant and relaxing effect on both customers and employees. The dedicated lighting of individual departments creates a shop-inshop impression, which makes it easier for them to find their way around. Wolf Tissler states: We have managed to place our products in the very best light possible in the respective sections and bring them to life for our customers.
