Junior News
Marvelous mammals are our focus for this term. The children are really enjoying this focus and can easily tell you what makes a mammal special. I am sure you will have been aware from their learning conversations at home that the children are really enthusiastic in discovering what mammals are and how we classify them. Fun Friday activities this term are all centered around different mammals even animal biscuits at cooking time. Room 8 even had a baby goat visit, which was very exciting. What determined children we have in the juniors when they all competed on Friday in the Junior Fun Run around the school. If the big kids can do it we decided, then so can we and it was so much fun. Everyone got a certicate for participation. There are a number of children coming to school well before 8.30 and wanting to come into the classrooms. The rule is that children can come into the class when the 8.30 bell goes and no earlier. As you will appreciate the time before this is teachers quiet preparation time. Please make sure your child arrives no earlier than 8.30. PMP needs more helpers for all classes please come along and help we need 5 adults per session to run each station. We would also love to see you at Fun Friday.

Middle News
Movie making with Minecraft - a scene in Room 3 (by Room 3) Georgia and Thomas become pixelated as they wander through the portal into a mysterious Minecraft world. Children huddled like emperor penguins, murmuring soft orders into the computer and the computer stares back at them like a mirror. The learning spreads as each kid excitedly nds a new object like lapis lazuli, diamonds, emeralds or Budder. Diamonds, rare and beautiful, shining like a wedding dress with glitter on it. The movie making spirit creeps through the classroom enveloping kids in a blanket of wonder and fascination. Children in room 6 have turned into script writers! After talking to other classes about their movie making experiences, they have been writing conversations, and practising speaking with expression this is not always easy to do! After sharing their scripts with each other, they collaborated and shared their ideas to create one script. Their next job was to think about what characters might be doing during each part of the script they needed to think like directors! Next week, theyll be doing the fun stuff when it is time to lm and see their ideas in action.

Senior News
There are a number of interesting things happening in the syndicate this term. Our Physical Education programmes have included running our school track, and many running games and activities. We have learnt how to protect against injury and increase exibility with effective warm ups and stretching exercises. Many children have also been training in their own time too. In topic work two classes are still scripting and lming, while two have moved to other Inquiry topics. Children have been asking thoughtful and interesting questions about their topics, and have started gathering information. This week we watched a show Keep Dunedin Beautiful. A drama team of three presented concepts related to the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message. It was interesting to hear that they had just two weeks to develop the concept and script, write songs, memorise their parts, and to work out their performance. There were strong parallels to our own school process of developing our movie. All classes are continuing to maintain a focus on learning times the tables facts. We would like all senior children to have a quick and accurate recall of these facts by the end of Year 6, but earlier is better. Many children have made great progress and are feeling very proud of themselves.

School Movie
Room 5 really enjoyed their trip to the Buttery House in the museum for the lming of their movie. They had to endure some challenging conditions, including the extreme heat. But it was a highly enjoyable and memorable day! Here are some comments listed from the PMI chart Positives, Minuses and Interesting. See if you can gure out where each statement would go. Some people had a lot of butteries land on them, and others didnt. I wonder why? We had to say our lines again and again until we got them just right. It was really hot in our overalls and some of us were sweating. I was really proud that I didnt forget my lines. Our wigs glowed in the dark because of the light in Discovery World. It was hotter at the top of the buttery house and cooler at the bottom. I learned that butteries dont always have the same colour on both sides of their wings. We had to make changes as we lmed because we didnt have much time. This is the best trip weve ever been on!

Ukulele Jam
In typical Kaikorai Ukulele style, a bunch of 30 enthusiastic Ukulele Players from the Senior and Middle Syndicate headed off to Tahuna on Friday, playing and singing our favourite songs together on the bus. This event involved 400 players from all over Otago. Music included old favourites like Stand By Me and a Rock and Roll Medley, as well as some cool contemporary songs such as Ho Hey and Army of Two. Everyone was accompanied by a band from Blueline Studio and some good marimba and drum playing from a selection of students including Tobias, Matthew, Scarlett, Max and Coe from Kaikorai Primary. Mark Dickel was a special guest on the day. He worked hard and ended up learning four chords in the process! After the event we traveled back, playing and singing our favourite songs, even more vigorously, all the way back to school. Well done to Kaikorais Ukulele players for working hard to learn twelve songs with 11 chords what an effort!

Congratulations!
