Walk in the footsteps of ABBA

The ABBA museum will not open for some time. But here are some of the main places to go for that special ABBA-feeling in Stockholm. Stay over night at Rival Hotel, walk the footsteps of ABBA on Djurgrden, take a canal tour and stop for a meal at Ulla Winbladh restaurant. Stroll in Gamla Stan and get entertained at Wallmans. Visit Drottningholm Palace and Gripsholm palace or get in to the right ABBA-songwriting mood in the archipelago. The Stockholm City Museum is proud to present ABBA City Walk, a walk through the city where Abba lived and worked! ABBA City Walk Join us on a walking tour of Abba land and 1970s Stockholm! Starting at the City Hall where Benny performed for the very first time, the tour continues via the Sheraton Hotel, one of many places Abba videos were recorded, and one of the citys most distinctive 1970s landmarks. www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se ABBA Places ABBA greets you at Arlanda - their hometown - In the arrival hall on the Stockholm international airport Arlanda (Terminal 5). Several posters of world-known Swedish celebrities are displayed on the long wall. The ABBA-group is presented as "living legends" with a well-known shot from the 1979 tour taken by Anders Hanser. ABBAs Djurgrden - The island of Djurgrden and Grdet plays a key roll in the videos and covers. One of the first pictures of the group together was taken on Grdet, with the Kaknstornet tower in the background. The nearby Sjhistoriska museum (National Maritime Museum) was also used. The area outside the Manilla School was used for the video Bang-A-Boomerang. www.kaknastornet.se / www.sjohistoriska.se Skansen Open Air Museum on the island of Djurgrden, founded in 1891, features some 160 cultural-historic buildings from all over Sweden, one of them being Julius Kronbergs Atelj. The cover photo of The Visitors album was taken in here. All the paintings to be seen on the record are still there and sometimes the building is open to the park's visitors. The big wooden Dala horse seen in several pictures of Bjrn and Benny is not far away now located on "Orsakullen" also at Skansen. www.skansen.se

Grna Lund amusement park is a popular concert and attractions park on the island of Djurgrden. ABBA performed here in the beginning of their career www.gronalund.com The staging of the Bjrn and Benny Musical Kristina frn Duvemla took place at the Circus building. The musicals Chess and Mamma Mia! has also been staged here. www.cirkus.se The cover photos for the "People Need Love" single were taken in a rainshelter just a short walk from the Kaknstornet tower. The Ulla Winbladh Restaurant was used for the European & US version of Greatest Hits" and on the French compilation release "Golden Double Album". www.ullawinbladh.se ABBAs historic favorites The Drottningholm Palace, today the private residence of the Swedish Royal Family, was built in the late 17th century and has magnificent drawing rooms from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, vast gardens one of Europes best preserved 18th century theatre and the Chinese Pavillion. Drottningholm Palace is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. ABBA made several photo sessions in the park and even filmed some episodes for "ABBA The Movie" here. The single cover of The Name Of The Game was taken in the garden behind the palace. Did you know that ABBA performed "Dancing Queen" for the Swedish King and Queen in 1976 at the Royal Opera House. In December 1993 a big gala was arranged at the Opera again when HRH Queen Silvia had her 50th birthday. "Dancing Queen" was sung by Anni-Frid Lyngstad together with The Real Group. www.royalcourt.se , www.operan.se Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen Many ABBA photo sessions took place in the old town (Gamla Stan), among them at the Stortorget Square. Not far from there, a photo session for ABBA The Album took place at Riddarholmen island, with the City Hall and the island of Sdermalm in the background.

The Gripsholm Palace at Mariefred is famous for its beauty and rich art collection. The palace dates back to 1537. In 1974 ABBA made the Waterloo photo session in the Palace. In the Painting Gallery at Gripsholm Palace includes a painting of Benny painted by Birgit Broms. www.royalcourt.se

Where to stay The Rival Hotel is a boutique hotel with it's own cinema located in the heart of the trendy Sdermalm area. The hotel is shaped by the vision of its owner, Benny Andersson, who wanted to recapture the glamour of the hotel from when it opened in the 1930s. In addition to The Rival Theatre there are bars, a bistro, a cafe and a bakery. www.rival.se Bjrn and Benny got their inspiration from the Stockholm Archipelago. Several hit songs: "Fernando", "Dancing Queen" and "Thank You For The Music" were written in a private cottage. Visit Grinda Island and stay at the Grinda Wrdshus Inn for the same atmosphere. www.grindawardshus.se Other places of interest Picture sessions for the Arrival album were taken at the Barkaby airfield north-west of Stockholm City. The famous Polar Studio by Sankt Eriksbron Bridge (S:t Eriksgatan 58) is where all ABBA-music produced from 1978 and on was recorded. The studio closed in 2004 and is now home of a gym. Alexandra disco was a well known night club in Stockholm at the end of 70s and in the 80s. The photo sessions for ABBA's 1979 album "Voulez-Vous was done here. Alexandra disco does not exist any more, but you can enjoy entertainment and dinner at Wallmans Dinnershow at the same place. In The Day Before You Came video you will see some other Stockholm sites: The rsta Bridge, commuter train (pendeltg) station Tumba and the China Theatre in Berzelii Park. The hotel scenes in ABBA the Movie were filmed at The Sheraton Hotel in Stockholm. The stairs situated on Kungsgatan leading up to Malmskillnadsgatan, the crossing Kungsgatan and Sveavgen, the departmentstore "NK" on Hamngatan are places seen in the Head Over Heals video. The video to Money Money Money was mostly done in the studio. But the canal-lock Slussen and Centralbron bridge are two locations in Stockholm used for the video.
