Meaning of Socialization Process of adaptation of new employee & the new employer to one another. All passages undergone by employees. They move from being an outsider to being an insider. Socialization is generalized norm conformity that occurs when a person makes the transition from begins to understand and accept the values, norms and beliefs held by others in the organization. Werther and Davis To understand socialization Organizational Culture: Every organization has a culture that defines appropriate behaviors for organizational members. Culture is the mix of the established values, attitude, beliefs, assumptions of the members of the organization. Often unwritten rules & regulations Roles: Behavior expected of persons who are identified with certain jobs. Roles are significantly influenced by values Values: Basic convictions (strong belief ) about what is right or wrong, good or bad, desirable or not. Every individual has a value system Norms: Standards of acceptable behavior. Tells members what they ought or ought not to do under certain circumstances Meaning of Orientation Orientation is only a small part of the overall socialization of a new organizational member. Activities involved in introducing a new employee to the organization & to his work unit. Provides background information regarding the firm. Expands upon the information received during the recruitment & selection stages It covers things like: The organizations objectives.

History. Philosophy. Procedures. Rules. H-R-M policies and benefits. Fellow employees. Helps reducing the initial anxiety we all feel when we first begin a new job The new employees orientation may not be formal at all

A Socialization Model

The Socialization Process


1.Pre-arrival Stage Each individual arrives with a set of organizational values, attitudes & expectations. These cover both the work to be done and the organization. For e.g. in many jobs, new members will have undergone a considerable degree of prior socialization in the training and in school. Selection process is used in most organizations to inform prospective employees about the organization & to ensure the inclusion of the right type that will fit in. The success depends on the degree to which the aspiring member has correctly anticipated the expectations and desires of those in the organization. 2.Encounter Stage Entry into the organization. Individuals confront between their expectations about their job, co-workers, boss & the organization in general & the reality. Where expectations & reality differ, the new employees must undergo socialization.At the extreme, new members may become totally disillusioned with the actualities of their job & resign. 3.Metamorphosis (Transformation) Stage Going through changes new members must work out any problems discovered during the encounter stage. New members become comfortable with the organization & their job.They understand & accept norms.Feel accepted by peers.Self confident & competence to complete their job.Understand the system rules, procedures.Knows what is expected of them

Types of Socialization Formal and informal (no special attention and segregated explicit role) Individual and collective (preserve indi. differences and formation of alliances) Fixed and variable time constraints (standardized and no advanced notice of transition time) Serial and dis juncture (guidance/mentor and no predecessor)

Purpose of Socialization
1. To To ensure predictability of employee behavior To substitute rules guiding employee behavior To increase employee performance and satisfaction To reduce anxiety ensure predictability of employee behavior

Learn about the acceptable and unacceptable behavior of the newly selected employee Thus, easier to predict the employees attitude at work 2. To substitute for rules guiding employee behavior Once the socialization process is complete, the new employee will be mixed up with the organizations culture Thus, socialization substitute for the rules & regulations guiding employee behavior Actions of the employees will generally be in accordance with the culture, norms, values of the organization 3. To increase employee performance & satisfaction Acceptance of socialization activities by the new employees can result in satisfaction of job roles, which leads to better performance Results in satisfaction of a new employee 4. To reduce anxiety Assists in the reduction of a new employees anxiety by providing more information about the new job situation & supervisors Puts employees at ease or no difficulties
