The Shamong Sun
Sean Gray was sworn in as
mayor of Shamong on Aug. 13,
filling the position through the
end of the year. Gray is a long-
time resident of Shamong, with
his wife and four children. Gray
intends to apply his conservative
fiscal principles to the townships
affairs during his term.
"It is a privilege to have the op-
portunity to serve, once again, as
the mayor of Shamong Town-
ship, and I appreciate the trust,
support and confidence of my fel-
low Committee members, Gray
said.
Kenneth Long has accepted the
role of deputy mayor.
Excited about it. I like work-
ing for the residents and its al-
ways an honor. Its always about
serving, Long said.
I want to thank Ken Long for
accepting the Committee's nomi-
nation to serve as deputy mayor
for the remainder of this term.

Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly recently
announced that the county will
now be sending important mes-
sages and notifications to resi-
dents through Nixle.
Nixle is an emergency man-
agement communications sys-
tem that allows government and
public safety organizations to
send notifications and alerts to
registered e-mail addresses and
cell phones.
Nixle is a great way for our
community to receive timely, ac-
curate information from the
county, Donnelly said.
Nixle will be used for commu-
nity alerts and emergency notifi-
cations.
For example, weather condi-
tions, road closures, important
notices etc.
Donnelly said the new system
was a significant step forward.
Residents can register online
for free at www.nixle.com and
choose whether to receive alerts
as a text message, e-mail, a notifi-
cation on the Nixle smartphone
app, or to view it online.
This is another step in our en-
hanced communication and
transparency plan, Donnelly
said.
We want all of our residents
to know exactly what is going on
in the county.

rom Day 1 here at Elauwit, we
have yearned to expand the
sports content in the towns we
cover. The youth sports scene is one
that draws a lot of attention and inter-
est from players, parents and commu-
nity members alike, and we have al-
ways known that it was a key area of
coverage for us.
Starting with this weeks issue, we
are excited to announce that your
towns youth sports from Little
Leagues to youth soccer to high school
sports will receive the extra atten-
tion they deserve. Nick Cohen, our for-
mer associate editor for the towns of
Mt. Laurel, Shamong and Tabernacle,
will take the reins as our first-ever
sports reporter, responsible for cover-
ing every one of our towns.
This week, you will see extensive
fall sports previews for each of your
towns public high schools, including a
profile story and full season schedules
for each sport. We will have another
similar preview for the winter and
spring sports seasons in the upcoming
2013-2014 school year.
We are planning regular coverage of
high school sports throughout the sea-
sons, as well as profile stories and pho-
tos of youth sports. After all, high
school sports arent the only games in
town.
Finally, Nick is working on an exten-
sive, multi-part series on safety in
youth sports how it has changed and
its effects on youth sports, from the
professional level all the way down to
the local level. We expect the series to
begin sometime this fall.
If you are a coach, parent, player or
fan who has a story idea, photo or invi-
tation to cover an event, please contact
Nick directly.
While we are greatly increasing our
focus on sports coverage, we still need
your help to keep us in tune and up to
date with all the happenings through-
out town. Please continue to send in
your photos, game roundups and story
ideas. Your help can only make our
coverage even better.
Play ball!!
Starting this week, expect a big push in sports coverage

County has lowest residential tax in region last year
With the county budget $43.6 million less
than it was in 2008 and the combined coun-
ty property tax levy down $25.2 million
since 2009, the respected Pew Charitable
Trust credited Burlington County with
having the lowest comparable, residential
tax burden in the Philadelphia region in a
study last year.
The Burlington County Freeholders re-
cently introduced a budget plan aimed at
earning that distinction again by reducing
the total taxes needed to run all county gov-
ernment programs by $7.7 million while
cutting the general operating budget by
more than $15 million.
The move is expected to continue a posi-
tive trend that has seen the county share of
an average residents total tax bill steadily
drop from 19 percent in 2007 to 15.8 percent
last year.
With the fallout from the recession still
impacting so many middle-class homeown-
ers and job seekers, our goal was to again
do more with less. We set out to continue
providing property tax relief, while pro-
tecting programs and services our resi-
dents value, said Freeholder Director Joe
Donnelly, who first took office in 2008. I
am proud to report that we were able to get
the job done.
Facing county tax ratables (property val-
ues) that plummeted another $1.9 billion,
resulting in a general revenue loss of $7.6
million, the freeholders analyzed the three
budgets of county government that each
operate off a separate and distinct dedicat-
ed tax general operations, the library sys-
tem and the open space and historic
preservation programs in an effort ease
the overall burden on property taxpayers.
We came to the conclusion that given
the $48 million already banked in our land
preservation fund, the 4-cent open space
tax could be safely reduced to 1.5 cents
without any negative impact on our efforts
to save land, maintain our parks, or contin-
ue operation of our popular municipal
recreation grant program, said Donnelly.
Donnelly reported that the overall coun-
ty property tax rate will remain un-
changed.
That will be accomplished via a decrease
in the dedicated open space tax of 2.5 cents
that will offset a corresponding increase in
the tax rate for the regular operating budg-
et.
The library tax rate will remain flat.
Donnelly said that he was confident that
the dedicated open space fund would not
only cover existing programs, but also was
healthy enough to fund three major initia-
tives: the planned Underground Railroad
Museum at Historic Smithville Park; the
conversion of Mount Holly Library into
the countys first general history museum;
and the recent partnership with the state,
Westampton Township, and other organi-
zations to keep Rancocas Nature Center in
operation.
several years. He brings good
common sense and an entrepre-
neurial background to this key
position, Gray said.
Long-time Shamong resident
Michael Di Croce has filled the
vacant position on the Commit-
tee through 2013.
I want to congratulate
Michael Di Croce on his nomina-
tion and approval to fill the Com-
mittee seat vacated by the retir-
ing Mayor Jon Shevelew. Mike
has been a long-time resident of
Shamong who has served capably
on the township's Joint Land Use
Board for several years and, most
recently, volunteered his legal
services pro bono to represent
the township and township resi-
dents in connection with the con-
troversial PSE&G tree trimming
matter, Gray said.
"I am happy and excited to
have been appointed to the Sha-
mong town Committee to fill the
vacant seat created by the retire-
ment of Mayor Shevelew, Di
Croce said.
As a long-time resident of Sha-
mong, Di Croce is proud of his
community, schools, neighbors
and local government. Di Croce
said the Pinelands have been a
great place to raise his three chil-
dren.
The Pinelands presents us
with a wonderful opportunity to
preserve and responsibly grow
our town for all of our families
and businesses, Di Croce said.
Having the opportunity to give
back, and participate in our local
government, is very important. I
am working to keep our local gov-
ernment responsive and effi-
cient, increasing personal liberty
and exploring new ways to grow
township revenue and opportuni-
ties, without any increase in
taxes.
Gray looks forward to a contin-
ued partnership with Committee
members Tim Gimbel and Marty
Mozitis.
I want to personally thank re-
tired Mayor Jon Shevelew for his
years of dedicated service on this
Committee and to the township.
He will be missed, and I sincerely
wish him a very long, happy,
healthy and well deserved retire-
ment," Gray said.
In other news:
The Committee approved a
measure to make improvements
to the municipal office space.
They include replacing 25-year-
old carpet, refiguring the office
space and replacing some of the
workstations that are 20 years
old. Used furniture will be pur-
chased if possible. The budget
will not exceed $10,000, and will
be paid from the capital fund that
is fully funded for upkeep and
maintenance on the municipal
building.

The Shamong Sun
With fall weeks away, there is
time to let your flowers bloom a
little longer before winter-proof-
ing your garden.
According to Debbie Lux, horti-
culturalist at Medford Leas Bar-
ton Arboretum and former presi-
dent of the Pinelands Garden
Club, deadheading perennials will
increase the life of the flower.
This time of the year, the birds
will eat the seeds. The spent
flower is something you will re-
move and make the plant stop
making the seeds you can keep it
going, Lux said. If you dead-
head it, its almost birth control in
a sense. Youre making the flower
produce more.
Deadheading annuals, like
marigolds, make the flowers nice
and lush until a frost, which may
not happen until November, ac-
cording to Lux. Keeping the flow-
ers alive until the first frost is pos-
itive for the environment. With
fall come the monarch butterflies,
which will utilize the plants for
food.
By removing the spent flow-
ers, theyll blossom a lot longer,
Lux said.
According to Lux, fall is the
perfect time to divide perennials
and transplant shrubs. She sug-
gests avoiding grasses because
those do better to divide and
transplant in the spring.
In general, fall is for planting.
And newly planted trees, you
should continue watering for a
good year, Lux said.
Take care of garden, avoid
flooding
Its no secret the Garden State
has been drowning this summer
in excessive rainfall. Removing
large amounts of mulch will
allow the water to drain better,
according to Lux.
I think where people may be
seeing an issue, where its wet
now, could be an issue later on in
the winter when its icy and it
rains on top of that, Lux said.
The water doesnt have any-
where to go. If youre getting
water in your basement now,
think of it when its icy.
Lux recommends taking care
of it now before there are too
many issues and the ground
starts to freeze. Gardeners have
the ability to create their own
mulch, Lux said.
A lot of times, I like to use a
mulch mower, especially if you
have a bag [in your mower], you
can mulch your lawn, said Lux,
who uses a lawnmower to cut
down her perennials and mulch
them right back into the bed. Its
easier cleanup instead of putting
it all out on the curb.
Layering the mulch moderate-
ly, no more than two or three
inches thick, will be enough, Lux
said.
If you put too much leaf of
mulch in general, you have too
many voles snacking on the plant
material under the plants. It will
harbor the pine vole, Lux said.
Avoid sick plants
According to Lux, fungi affect-
ing rose bushes can be spread to
others through trimming.
Were having a big issue.
Theres a disease thats plaguing
the rose bushes. The spring is the
best time to keep the roses, Lux
said.
The people who have roses
know what to do. Most people
dont do roses unless its a knock-
out rose.
Herbs
Lavender, thyme and rosemary
are all hearty plans that come
back annually, Lux said.
Cutting those specific plants
is always a great idea, Lux said.
They tend to get woody.
With other herbs, the plants
are not as viable as they reach
the end of their life.
Consider cutting them and
rooting them to plant again, Lux
said.
Cut back lavender or thyme
in spring and summer. Save them
so they have a replacement just
in case the plant needs to be re-
rooted.
Other plants
According to Lux, winter pan-
sies are an option for blossoms.
Theyll bloom through the
winter and into the spring when
people are going to plant their an-
nuals again, Lux said.
Vegetable gardeners can plant
garlic and kale in the fall, which
will remain through the colder
months.
The Pinelands Garden Club
meets the second Monday of the
month at Medford Leas.
Anybody is welcome to meet-
ings, and its not always about
gardens but about nature in gen-
eral, Lux said.
