CHAPTER EIGHT

ATTAINING THE
SUPREME
Arjuna asked,
O Supreme, what’s demigod, what’s Brahma?
What’s matter, self, activities or karma?
Who is lord of sacrifice? How does He dwell?
How, only pure devotees know Him so well?
\\1\2\\

Lord Sri Krsna said,

Living entity, eternal and infinite, is Brahma,
But I, the controller, am Supreme Brahma.
Eternal in nature, Brahma is jivatma or soul,
Arjuna, know Me as Paramatma, the supersoul.

8/2 Gita My Mother Ch.8

Adhiyajna: the lord of sacrifice, O Partha,

Adhidaiva: demigods, suns, moons and earth.
Adhibhuta: worldly forms and living entities.
I am everything with boundless energies.
\\4\\

One who quits body, remembering Me only,

Without doubt, attains to My nature truly.
\\5\\

One’s conscious during life and death

Is transmigrated surely to the next birth.
\\6\\

Hence, Arjuna, think of Me always,

There are simple and ample ways.
But don’t forget thy prescribed duty,
And there in too, see only My beauty.
\\7\\

Without deviation, practice thy mind,

Shunning all the worldly things behind,
Chant My name and only think of Me,
Without doubt then thou wilt reach Me
\\8\\

Know Me as supreme and oldest,

Eternal, creator, maintainer and strongest,
Bigger than biggest, smaller than smallest!
Darker than darkest, brighter than brightest! \\9\\
Ch.8 Attaining the supreme 8/3

If one, while this body away throws,

Stables his prana between eye brows,
And remembers Me alone in devotion,
Such mystic yogi attains liberation.
\\10\\

People with vedic wisdom and study,

Practice celibacy, shun desires worldly,
Attain they to Brahma and Me finally.
Listen from Me, this methodology briefly.
\\11\\

Shut the doors of all the senses, Arjuna,

On top of head fix mind, vision and prana,
Continue to chant the divine OOMM,
Now if you quit, you need not roam.
\\12\13\\

One who always remembers Me

And is My true undeviated devotee,
Other than Me thinks he nothing,
Sees and feels Me only in every thing
He comes to My abode heavenly,
Never gets back again life earthly.
\\14\15\\

While My abode, O Partha, is free of miseries,

Other planets and earths are full of drudgeries.
When once you attain to My kingdom,
Never you need to look to any freedom. \\16\\
8/4 Gita My Mother Ch.8

During Brahma’s day universe manifests

And during His night, in Me it rests.
During day, living beings are evolved,
And during night, in Me dissolved,
During day get they many forms,
And during night rest in My arms.
Thus again n again they are born
And to pieces again and again torn.
\\17\18\19\\

My transcendental energy but is unaffected,

Never during day or night, manifested,
Ever in My service that spreads bliss
Know, My highest energy this is.
\\20\\

My abode, splendorous and wonderful,

For those freed is glorious and blissful.
Scholars call it unmanifested Brahma,
Whence, none takes any worldly form.
\\21\\

Though I stay in My abode,

Yet everywhere only I pervade,
Now, listen how after passing away,
Jnanis to My abode come and stay.
\\22\23\\
Ch.8 Attaining the supreme 8/5

Jnanis, departing during auspicious period,

Come reside with Me in My spiritual shade,
Else they go to earth or other planet;
My devotee is free from such affect.
\\24\\

One that quits, while sun does shine

Freed he comes to abode of mine,
Else he is born again and again;
But My devotees need no bargain.
\\25\\
Vedas tell two ways to depart,
During darkness and light, as poles apart.
Devotees though aware of these paths,
Never but worry with such trifle maths.
\\26\ 27\\

Not panacea, charity and austerity

Not karmakandas or even duty,
But devotion, love, faith and piety,
Bind Me with bhaktas, with certainty,
And take them to the highest point,
Whence they will glitter as starlight.
