Ethiopian Sport Hero and

Legend Abebe Bikila
Abebe Bikila (1932 - 1973)

world to know that my country Ethiopia has always won with determination
and heroism."

Abebe Bikila

Abebe Bikila Abebe Bikila was exceptionally talented at the marathon, winning two gold medals, setting world
records, in the process heralding a new
era in marathon running, one in which
speed was the key to victory, rather
than raw strength and endurance. More
than three decades after his running career ended, Bikila is widely recognized
as the greatest marathoner of all-time.
Abebe Bikila was born in 1932 in a
town called Jato, outside of Addis Ababa. According to tradition, he spent
most of his childhood as a shepherd
and a student. In 1952, young Abebe
was hired by the Imperial Body Guard.
In 1954, he married W/t Yewibdar W/
Giorghis with whom he had four children.
Bikila spent a number of years with the
Imperial Guard before he distinguished
himself as an athlete. His defining moment came when he was watching a
parade of Ethiopian athletes who had
participated in the Melbourne Olympics. Looking at the athletes who were
wearing a uniform with names written
on the back, he asked who they were.
When told that they were athletes who
represented Ethiopia in the Olympics,
he was determined to be one of them.
In 1956, at the age of 24, he participated in the national armed forces
championships. Abebe Bikila The
hero of the time was Wami Biratu, who
held the national records in 5,000 and
10,000 meters. During the marathon,
the crowd at the stadium was waiting,
expecting to see Biratu win the race.
In the first few miles, Wami was leading. After a while, radio broadcasters
informed the crowd that a young unknown athlete by the name of Abebe
was leading. As Bikila was extending
his lead, the crowd waited anxiously
to see this new sensation. Bikila easily won his first major race and later
on went to break the 5,000 and 10,000
meter records held by Wami. With
those impressive results, he qualified
for the Rome Olympics.
Finally, Bikila's dream of wearing that
outfit with Ethiopia's name written on
the back was realized. Abebe's race in
the Rome Olympics established him as
a running legend. Not only did he win
the race, he also set a new world record
of 2:16:02, running on the cobblestone
streets of Rome without shoes. He was
also the first African to win an Olympic
medal. Commenting on why he had run
on bare feet, Abebe said, "I wanted the

Bikila came to Boston in 1963, the

heavy favorite to take the historic marathon. But cold winds blowing in off
the ocean in the late miles felled the
great Ethiopian, and he settled for fifth
place in a pedestrian 2:24. At the Tokyo
Olympics a year later, Bikila's fame
had reached all corners of the globe.
Despite the Boston debacle, he was favored to win the Olympic Marathon yet
again. Six weeks before the marathon
however, Bikila was taken ill with Appendicitis. He underwent surgery amid
a public outcry for a proper medical
treatment. The day he arrived in Tokyo,
he hadn't fully recovered from the surgery and limped down stairs. However,
the reception Abebe received from the
Japanese people helped him recover
quickly and unexpectedly. Along with
teammates Mamo Wolde and Demssie Wolde, Bikila resumed his regular
training a few days after his arrival in
Tokyo. The marathon, particularly the
way Abebe won it barely six weeks after his surgery, was astonishing. This
time he wore shoes, but still won the
race easily. And the gymnastic display
he showed right after finishing the race
is now a classic image engraved in the
minds of hundreds of millions of people. This was also the first time ever
that the Olympic marathon race was
won consecutively by the same athlete.
The new world record of 2:12:11 that
Abebe set was icing on a cake for this
remarkable race. Bikila trained hard
for the Mexico City Olympics of 1968.
Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from
the race after 15 kilometers. His compatriot, Mamo Wolde would later finish
the race victoriously. Bikila competed
in more than 26 major marathon races
in his illustrious athletic career.
The world championships he won in
1960 and 1962 deserve special recognition. In 1968, The legendary Bikila
was involved in a car accident in the
city of Sheno near Addis Ababa that
left him paralyzed below the waist.
Over the next several months, he was
treated both in Ethiopia and abroad.
Even while in a wheelchair, Abebe's
competitive spirit and helped him compete and win several races. In 1970, he
participated in a 25 Km cross-country
competition in Norway where he won
the gold medal. The illustrious life of
the legendary Abebe Bikila came to a
tragic end in October of 1973 when he
finally succumbed to a disease he had
battled for many months. This eternal Ethiopian hero was buried in the
grounds of the St. Joseph church in the
presence of a huge crowd and the then
emperor, Atse Haile Selassie. His life
was over, but the memories remained.
Bikila ushered in a new era in marathon
running - and he made it look easy.

EDITORIAL
The Ethiopian Canadian Day & New Year
By the time we meet again with yet
another issue of TZTA in the later part of
September we would have celebrated
a New Year. To be exact it will be the
Ethiopian New Years.

As 2005 concludes and 2006 is around

the corner in a city of Toronto that has
a large Ethiopian population arguably
next to Washington DC there will be
a huge celebration at Christie Park in
the heart of Toronto. This has been our
Ethiopian Canadian tradition for a very
long time. This gathering is expected
to attract thousands of Ethiopians and
Friends of Ethiopians from the GTA and
all over the world.

TZTA will aim to capture this great activity

of ours in the upcoming issues of TZTA.
The Ethiopian signature to the world
is that of a wonderful culture in people
and diversity in unique perspectives. We
are indeed lucky to be Ethiopians. Our
histories are as unique as our people and
visit any part of Toronto one is yet to
discover the Ethiopian influence mostly
at our beautiful restaurants.
Today in Toronto every March is
declared as an Ethiopian Heritage Month
by the City of Toronto. We have political
candidates such as one of our Ethiopian
Canadian columnists - Samuel Getachew
aiming a great historical effort from

Scarborough. The idea of Little Ethiopia

is no longer a lofty fantasy but a potential
destination for us. F
Our youth are even excelling in the
academic world making all of us proud.
Alpha Abebe one of the influential
members the great youth group Young
Diplomats - who is completing her PHD
at the prestigious Oxford University in the
United Kingdom often comes to mind.
We are proud of your journey Alpha.

It is exciting to be an Ethiopian Canadian

in Toronto. We are at a crossroad to
something great. Let us capture it as we
mark yet another New Year notice our
vast shortcomings and overcome them

- and more importantly be proud to be

an Ethiopian Canadian. We are special
people with great potential. We have
much to celebrate.
See you at Christie Pitts at the great
Ethiopian New Years celebration on
September 7th. We are always thankful
for all the volunteers who plan and
execute thisa great event via the Ethiopian
Community Association in Toronto. We
urge everyone to come and enjoy the great
festivity.
Rest assured TZTA will
documenating our great
Canadian journey.

Ottawa calls on Egypt to release evidence against 2

Canadians arrested in Cairo

Greyson, a Toronto-based
filmmaker

Loubani, an emergency room

physician from London,

The Canadian government is calling
on Egyptian officials to release all evidence
against the two Canadians who were arrested in
Cairo amid the ongoing violence and protests.

Minister of State for consular
affairs Lynne Yelich said she spoke to a senior
Egyptian official and has requested that a
confirmation of the nature of the charges
brought against Canadian filmmaker John
Greyson and emergency room doctor Tarek
Loubani be released.

This afternoon, I spoke with a senior
Egyptian official to request confirmation of the
nature of the charges and call for all evidence
against the two Canadians be released, Yelich
said in a statement.

and Loubani, who were heading to Gaza via
the Egyptian border prior to their arrest, are

currently being held in Torah prison, located on

the outskirts of Cairo, CTV News has learned.

It is the same prison where former
president Hosni Mubarak is being held.

Earlier on Sunday, Deepak Obrai,
a Conservative MP and the parliamentary
secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
confirmed that consular officials in Cairo have
seen the two men.

"Our officials have visited the two
gentlemen who have been detained. We are in
with contact with the families," Obrai told CTV
News.

On Friday, Greyson, a Toronto-based
filmmaker and a York University professor,
and Loubani, an emergency room physician
from London, Ont., were arrested in Cairo,
according to their friend Justin Podur.

News of the arrests came after Podur,
a professor at the faculty of environmental
studies at York University, received a call from
Loubani.

On his website, Podur said Loubani
told him that "we are being arrested by Egyptian
police."

During the call which lasted
approximately 10 seconds Podur said his
friend sounded "calm."

According to Podur, the pair was
arrested at approximately 10 p.m. local time on
Friday, which is after the imposed curfew time.

"We don't know what the charges
could be against them which is, of course,
the case for hundreds of people right now,"

Podur told CTV News Channel on Sunday.

The families of both Greyson and
Loubani released statements on Sunday
regarding the two men's arrest.

"We are very concerned about John's
safety," Greyson's family members, Cecilia
Greyson and Stephen Andrews said. "We are
confident that the Canadian Embassy in Cairo
is doing everything they can to secure their
immediate release."

Loubani's
brother,
Mohammed
Loubani, said although he recognized that
Egypt is "going through a painful transition,"
arresting a physician and filmmaker and
detaining them "without due process is clearly
a step in the wrong direction."

According Podur, Greyson and
Loubani arrived in Egypt on Thursday, with
the intention of going straight to Gaza via the
border.

The men were travelling to Gaza
to visit the Emergency Department of Al
Shifa Hospital, Gazas largest hospital, where
Loubani has spent time training doctors as part
of an ongoing project with the University of
Western Ontario.
Greyson was going with Loubani in the hopes
of researching a potential future film set in
Gaza, he said.

"They were intending to go straight
to Gaza, but because of all the unrest the
border crossing was closed," he said. "So they
ended up staying in Cairo."

Podur said that the "best chance" for

securing Greyson and Tarek's release will be if

the Canadian government pressures Egyptian
authorities.

"We really need the Canadian
government to press as hard as they can for
their release," he said.

Podur's call joins the chorus of
Egyptian Canadians who are urging the
Canadian government to take a stronger stance
against Egyptian authorities.

Waleed Aboziad, an organizer of a
Toronto demonstration of Egyptian Canadians,
said the Canadian government should consider
cutting military aid to Egypt in light of the
violence that's killed at least 800 people.

"If there is any aid that (is) going to
this illegal government, they should cut it for
now," he said. "They can put some pressure on
the government and say 'No, we dont support
killing people on the streets.'"

On Sunday, five days after clashes
between Egyptian authorities and supporters of
ousted president Mohammed Morsi began, the
country's top military leader said the army will
not tolerate any new violence.

The Canadian government is
reminding people to avoid all non-essential
travel to Egypt and to avoid the protests.

Canada welcomes first immigrants under new

Federal Skilled Trades Program
successful applicant of the Federal Skilled
Trades Program. New permanent resident
Paul Lyttle has been working as an electrician for Calgary-based Unitech Electrical
Contracting Inc. since June 2012.

Minister Alexander at an event to welcome first immigrants under new Federal

Skilled Trades Program

Toronto, August 16, 2013 Canadas Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris
Alexander today officially welcomed one
of the first permanent residents under the
new Federal Skilled Trades Program: Eric
Byrne, originally from Ireland.

Our Government remains focused on job

creation, economic growth and long-term
prosperity, said Alexander. The new
Federal Skilled Trades Program enables us
to attract and retain skilled workerslike
Ericso we can address regional labour
shortages and strengthen Canadas economy. It gives me great pleasure to personally
welcome one of Canadas first successful
immigrants through our Skilled Trades
stream.
Eric Byrne received his Ontario trades certificate of qualification in May 2012 and

currently works as a plumber for University Plumbing and Heating. He first arrived
in Canada through the International Experience Canada program, which provides
opportunities for international youth between the ages of 18 and 35 to travel and
work in Canada.
Canada is a great country and the people
here have been exceptionally warm and
welcoming, said Eric Byrne. I am very
pleased that I qualified for the Federal
Skilled Trades Program as it recognizes
the value of my skill set and has allowed
me to stay in Canada and integrate seamlessly into my new status as a permanent
resident.
At the same time today in Calgary, Employment and Social Development Minister Jason Kenney welcomed another

Good news

The new Federal Skilled Trades Program

is a significant improvement to Canadas
immigration system which, for too long,
had not been open to in-demand skilled
workers, said Minister Kenney. Immigrants like Paul are set for success and I
am pleased that this new Program will enable him, and others like him, to contribute skills to our economy on a permanent
basis.
Relocating to Canada was the right decision for me, both personally and professionally, said Paul Lyttle. Im grateful
for the opportunity to stay here in Canada permanently and can now start making
long-term plans.
To date, successful applicants under the
Federal Skilled Trades Program have originated from different countries including
India, Lithuania, Latvia and Germany, in
addition to Ireland.
The Government of Canada launched the
Federal Skilled Trades Program in January 2013 to facilitate the immigration of
skilled tradespeople who meet Canadas
current and evolving economic needs.

Skilled tradespeople are assessed on relevant criteria, such as language ability,

practical training and work experience
rather than formal academic education.
The Program was also created in response
to requests from Canadian employers for
skilled workers to fill labour shortages,
particularly in the natural resources and
construction sectors. In order to attract and
retain qualified, in-demand candidates, the
goal is to process applications as quickly
as possible. Eric Byrnes application was
processed in only three months, while Paul
Lyttles was finalized in four months.
From an industry perspective, we are elated that the first ones of what we hope will
be many new skilled trade professionals
have been admitted to Canada under the
Federal Skilled Trades Program, said Mr.
Michael Atkinson, President of the Canadian Construction Association. This new
Program responds directly to industry requests for a faster and more effective immigration program focused specifically on
skilled trade professionals who are in short
supply across Canada.
The Federal Skilled Trades Program, along
with other recent transformational changes
to economic immigration programs, supports Economic Action Plan 2013 by building a fast and flexible immigration system
focused on Canadas economic and labour
market needs.

The Immigrant Womens Health
Centre (IWHC) is an independent sexual health
clinic funded by the City of Toronto, through
Toronto Public Health. For over 35years, IWHC
has been providing free culturally sensitive
and language-accessible sexual health-related
clinical, counselling and support services to
women across the City of Toronto.

The center was initiated to cater for
the needs of newcomer women who came into
Toronto for whatever reason but could not
access the mainstream health facilities with
their sexual health issues because of various
barriers such as language, culture, distance,
availability, financial, to mention a few.We
serve our clients in 11different languages with
an all-female staff.IWHC is female-centred
organization.

Our mandate is to empower women
to be well-informed about their reproductive
health needs and choices, and to offer
sexual health clinical services, counselling,
information, education, outreach and other
support services in order to facilitate that selfcare.
The services offered at the center include:
On site Clinic
Mobile Clinic offering clinical and counselling
services at your door step
Workshops
Displays

Counselling
Educational materials

The challenges that newcomers face
are enormous and it takes more than giving
them information about places they can receive
or access healthcare for them to go. Some of
the women may have young children they
may be caring for because they cannot afford
nanny services, working two or more jobs to
cater for the needs of the family, saddled with
cultural norms where she is strictly under
the command of the husband. The cultural
influence could be so overwhelming that it has
been reported that in some cases husbands have
to give their wives permission to seek health
care.

At Immigrant Womens Health Center
we do not only give information or health care
but we create a friendly and cordial atmosphere
for the clients to feel at home and tell their
stories in a language that they can explicitly
express themselves in and be heard. The IWHC
has been well placed to be able to cater for the
needs of the newcomer and in ways that will
empower her.

Michael Belayneh: The King Of

Milestone Ballads

By Samuel Getachew

Canadian schools love Foreign Students.

So do Canadian immigration officials.

The strongest assets a new Canadian
can have are Canadian work experience and
Canadian education. International students in
Canada can get both.

And once the international student has
enough Canadian education and Canadian work
experience he or she can apply for permanent
residence in Canada.

Canada issues student permits where
visa officials can see that the student has been
admitted to a Canadian school, is serious and
can be trusted to follow the rules, and has
enough financial resources to afford tuition,
school supplies, health insurance and living
expenses.

Because most schools teach in the
English or French languages students will
have to show sufficient skill in one of those
languages. In some cases foreign students come
to Canada to learn those language skills before
they enroll in full time school.

International students are highly
regarded by Canadian immigration officials,
as they should be. International students have
the ambition and dedication to come to Canada
to attend school. They will obtain Canadian
education and work experience. This makes
them highly desirable workers and highly
desirable migrants. They have shown their
ambition, their dedication and their work ethic,
and they are still young and adaptable enough to
learn more on the job.

I mentioned the need for financial
resources for tuition etc. Many of you may be
interested to know that international students
can get work permits for part time work during
the school year and full time work during break
periods such as the school's Christmas and
summer holidays.

And where the student is married or in
a common-law relationship the student's spouse
or partner can normally get an open work permit
for full time employment. "Open work permit"
means that once the spouse or partner finds an
employer he or she can start work. Employers
and spouses both like the convenience of that
arrangement.
List of Work Experiences that qualify

category is full) is as follows:

A few years ago, I was in my home
city of Addis Ababa from Toronto. I felt I was
a stranger in my own birth city after being
away for an eternity in Canada. The old aging sleepy Addis Ababa has changed becoming a more modern city. There are now wonderful destinations to visit besides the night
clubs that used to occupy much of the city.
Constructions are literally at every street and
it seems, there is a much United Nations like
diversity in the population.

While I left as a youngster, I had returned as an adult. The city is full of youth
and in my thirties, I felt like a grandfather.
It seems everyone was calling me "gashe" -the Amharic term that is usually reserved for
the elderly. In a city that is emerging as an
"African economical giant," its poverty really
shocked me as well. I felt a stranger and an
outsider at best.

However, where I felt an Ethiopian
and saw the local Ethiopians at their patriotic best was at the cultural centers throughout
the city. The cinemas are full of customers
patronizing Ethiopian made movies instead of
the Indian movies I used to watch growing up.

To the world, Ethiopian music is
still foreign unlike the African music from
South Africa, Senegal or Congo is enjoying
international destinations. From the patriotic
Teddy Afro to the soulful sound of Gossaye
and the sound of the Ethiopian Armenian
Vahe Tilbian -- Ethiopian music is slowly yet
surely gaining ground.

While in Ethiopia, I was invited to
an Armenian (Ethiopian) event at the beautiful Beherawi Theatre in downtown Addis.
The event was paying tribute to the vast musical contributions of the Armenians in Ethiopia. The event paid tribute to the Maestro
Nerses Nalbandian who has made a gigantic
contribution to the modern day music of Ethiopia.

In the magnificent stage, there were
musical talents from the local and international communities. One stood out the most. His
name is Michael Belayneh.

For him, every song had a story and
embraced the emotions of each and every
word as he experienced them all. His presence
was so profound much like the late Tilahun
Gessesse, gave the words so much authority
with rare emotion the way only Mahamud
Ahmed could yet made it all seem simple and
classy the way Alemayehy Eshete has made it
his signature.

Belayneh may not have the popularity of a Teddy Afro yet however he is creating
a quiet revolution in Ethiopian music. His latest CD is a testament of his rare organic talent
and gift. His new CD is a text book of where
Ethiopian music is potentially is headed. If
Ethiopian music has any positive evolution in
the years to come, Belayneh is one of the few
rare talent to lead it.

His ballads -- three in total -- will
soon become a soundtrack to many milestones
in many people's lives. In Temechi Endew for
instance - he sings about love lost and the hope
of being reunited to it. It is the most beautiful
ballad I have heard in such a long time. He
even attempts a daring cover of a classic song
by Getachew Kassa -- Saysh Esasalehu.

For many artists, it could have been
a big risk to imitate the very best in Kassa yet
Belayneh is an exception. I am sure Kassa
would be proud of Belayneh.

While I sat down with thousands in
a beautiful hall, Michael Belayneh took me
to my roots as well as the culture I have always tried to maintain in my Canadian life. In
the presence of the great cultural ambassador
that Belayneh has become, I no longer felt a
stranger in my own Ethiopian heritage but an
Ethiopian.

No Ethiopian artist made me feel
that way -- until I discovered the wonderful
talent of - Michael Belayneh.

Why The Universal Voice Of Eyob Mekonnen Mattered?

In the brilliant movie - "I Dreamed of

Africa" - of a noted environmental activist
and poet in Kuki Gallmann - what stood out
the most for me was the words spoken by
the character at the funeral of her 17 year
old son. (This happened three years after
burying her husband) "To bury a husband
was hard. To bury my son is against nature
and a pain which words cannot tell".

What words can ever describe
death let alone the death of a young person?
In the continent of Africa for instance a rare unique artistic and activist voice
became silent at the young age of 37 this
past weekend. The death of the acclaimed
Ethiopian artist Eyob Mekonnen has
shaken the continent to its core as it was
sudden and unexpected at best.

The death of the emerging
international artist came mere days after

he had a sudden stroke in Addis

Ababa and being in a coma for
mere days. The death seems to
be linked to an ischemic stroke,
unusual for a young person of
his age, which is the blockage
of artery of the neck. According
to those close to the artist, the
death was caused as a result
of "a condition called atrial
fibrillation where your heart
flutters and you can get a clot
in your heart that then propagates to your
brain vessels".

The voice of Mekonnen was
powerful in Africa and he mattered. He
was an important artist of importance,
popularity and he used his talent wisely. In
2010 for instance - he went on a nationwide
tour in his East African nation to advocate
for peace and called his efforts - Finding
Peace. This happened during a disputed
national election in Ethiopia that divided
the population. This also seemed to reflect
a desire he believed peace was better
than war as he had first hand experience
in real conflicts in Asmara, Eritrea where
his father was a government military
personnel during the Ethiopian - Eritrean
war decades ago.

The "simple superstar" as he was

affectionately became known by his fans

was born in Jijiga, Ethiopia in 1975 - at the
beginning of a horrible Marxist revolution
era in the East African country. As a young
person - he moved to the capital to pursue
a promising talent that was organic and
unique. His sound was largely influenced
by Bob Marley and Ethiopia's Ali Birra.
He was arguably Ethiopia's own version of
the great late South African international
superstar, Lucky Dube.

He mixed Amharic reggae with
Oromiffa and gave it an international
flavor. He had no success at the beginning
as it did not blend in the manufactured
popular sound and style that the population
was used to by then. He spent many years
as an opening act at local clubs for better
known stars such as Haileye Tadesse and
preformed at small venues all over Addis
Ababa.

Then he released his first album Ende Kal three years ago. After an initial
reluctance by the population - it was
embraced in due time. The more people
listened to it - the more he was liked and
appreciated. His once neglected sound
moved from shanty town like night clubs
to a world stage with sold out concerts all
over the world. He also became a regular
at Club Fahrenheit with his beloved

band - the Zion Band. He preached love,

understanding and respect - very popular
theme to his fans.

Everywhere he went including
many sold out concerts here in Toronto in
June, he was liked, respected and admired.
It has been a long journey for this superstar
who even at stardom rode his bicycle to
concerts without any fanfare. His words
and wisdom was celebrated here in Canada
and abroad by many people. That is why
his death is a blow to the potential he
possessed. He was a simple everyday man
of beautiful and unique Ethiopian sound
yet powerful universal appeal.

In the coming days - the young
giant will be buried in the proud soil of his
beloved Ethiopia - that he dedicated much
in his artistic journey in celebration. In his
death - I for one cannot help but remember
the wise words of the late American poet Amelia Burrm - in The Song of Living.

It read (in part) how - "I gave
a share of my soul to the world, when
and where my course is run. I know that
another shall finish the task I surely must
leave undone. I know that no flower, nor
flint was in vain on the path I trod. As one
looks on a face through a window, through
life I have looked on God, I have loved life;
I shall have no sorrow to die".

Rhythm divine: the Ethiopian nun whose music enraptured

the Holy Land
Jersusalem's classical music lovers honour Emahoy Tsegu-Mariam Guebr, 90, after a life devoted to God and the pian
strange combination of classical, Ethiopian and
blues," said Dunietz. "And then we read the
sleeve notes and discovered she lives right here
in Jerusalem."
The couple found Guebr sitting at the piano
in her room at the church, and began a series
of visits. "In the beginning there was a lot of
silence. We felt there was a lot of longing and
sorrow and loneliness, but slowly a connection
started," said Dunietz.

From a small, spartan room in the
courtyard of the Ethiopian church off a narrow
street in Jerusalem, a 90-year-old musical
genius is emerging into the spotlight.

For almost three decades, Emahoy
Tsegu-Mariam Guebr has been closeted at
the church, devoting herself to her life's twin
themes faith and music. The Ethiopian nun,
whose piano compositions have enthralled
those who have stumbled across a handful of
recordings in existence, has lived a simple life,
rarely venturing beyond the monastery's gates.

But this month the nonagenarian's
scribbled musical scores have been published as
a book, ensuring the long-term survival of her
music. And on Tuesday, the composer will hear
her work played in concert for the first time, at
three performances in Jerusalem. Guebr may
even play a little.

Her music has been acclaimed by
critics and devotees. Maya Dunietz, a young
Israeli musician who worked with Guebr
on the publication of her scores, says in her
introduction to the book that the composer has
"developed her own musical language".

"It is classical music, with a very
special sense of time, space, scenery," Dunietz
told the Guardian. "It's not grand; it's intimate,
natural, honest and very feminine. She has a
magical touch on the piano. It's delicate but
deep. And all her compositions tell stories of
time and place."

Guebr's inspiration comes not only
from her faith, but from her life: an extraordinary
journey from an aristocratic family in Addis
Ababa, with strong links to Emperor Haile
Selassie, to a monastery in the historic centre of
Jerusalem .

She was born Yewubdar Guebr on
December 12 1923 and lived in the Ethiopian

capital until, aged six, she and her sister were

sent to boarding school in Switzerland. In one
of two seminal moments of her life, there she
heard her first piano concert, and began to play
and study music.

After her return to Addis Ababa,
and a period of exile for her family followed
by yet another return, Guebr was awarded a
scholarship to study music in London. But she
was unexpectedly denied permission to leave
by the Ethiopian authorities.

In
the
bleak days following
this
calamity,
Guebr
refused
food until, close to
death, she requested
holy
communion.

music to devote
herself to prayer, and after several years joined
a monastery in northern Ethiopia. She spent 10
years there, barefoot and living in a mud and
stone hut.

It was here she changed her name
to Emahoy Tsegu-Mariam. It was only after
rejoining her mother in Addis Ababa that
Guebr resumed playing and composing and
even recorded a few albums.

Guebr and her mother later spent six
years in Jerusalem, and she returned to the Holy
Land to take up permanent residence after her
mother's death in 1984. She has remained at the
imposing circular Ethiopian church ever since.

Dunietz came across her music eight
years ago when her husband, the conductor Ilan
Volkov, brought home a CD he had bought in
London. "We listened and were amazed by the

Guebr was still playing and composing in her

room, but she had not performed in public for
several years, and her music was "not much
appreciated" within the monastery. Dunietz
immediately understood the importance of
publishing the nun's scores to create and
preserve a musical legacy, but the project did
not get off the ground until two years ago.

"
She handed over four plastic bags
old wrinkled Air Ethiopia bags containing
hundreds of pages, all muddled up, a big mess,
written in pencil, some of them 60 or 70 years
old. It was all the pages of her music that she
had found in her room. 'Make a book', she said."
It was, added Dunietz, "like an archaeological
dig" to piece together the scores.

Daunted by the task, Dunietz sought
the help of the Jerusalem Season of Culture,
which organises an annual summer festival of
art, music and food in the city. As well as the
book, the three concerts have a huge significance for Guebr.

"This is the first time she will hear her
own music performed in concert by professional artists," said Duenitz, who will play the piano. "It is what every composer wants." Guebr,
she says, is feeling overwhelmed by the attention and has largely withdrawn into the solitude
of her monastery room, declining requests for
interviews and meetings.

In the book accompanying Guebr's
music, Meytal Ofer, a regular visitor over recent
months, describes her: "I enter a darkened room
and catch my first glimpse of her, an elderly
woman, not a wrinkle on her face, lying in bed.

It is a modest room with a small window. In the

room is a bed, a piano, piles of musical scores
and a picture of Haile Selassie and the Empress
Menen hung above the papers."
