J o a n Ta y l o r s . . . . . Te n P i n R a p . . . . .
While I was enjoying Bowling Boot Camp at Rockaway Lanes, I noticed a group of toddlers and parents coming in for a birthday party (Rockaway management made sure that the group was on the last pair of lanes, far away from the camp). I decided to walk down and see how they set it up, when I heard a familiar voiceMorris County USBC WBA Director Marisa DelSordi. She was kneeling, giving the youngsters some basic dos and donts for their bowling. She used small understandable words and pointed out that crossing that black line (the foul line) was not to be done. I observed that none of the parents said a word, allowing each child to listen. I walked into the party room and saw some tables set up nicely with mylar balloons and place settings. Once the bowling was over, everyone went to the party room. After a total of two hours, counting bowling, they all left, looking very happy. Marisa was the Rockaway Lanes party host and as such, she supervised and assisted when and where necessary. Doing more investigating, I found that Rockaway offers different birthday party packages. There is a laser light party available on Saturday afternoons at 1:45, 3:00 or 4:15 for $17.50 per child. It includes one hour of bowling, rental shoes, a souvenir pin bank, party invitations, small soda, French fries (served family style), the use of the party room for 45 minutes, choice of hamburger, hot dog or pizza, and each child receives a glow gift. Additional options were a layer or ice cream cake at $2.00 per child, and goody bags at $3.00 per child. Without the laser lights, a regular party ran $16.00 per child. Marisa said that the lanes also offer a Super Saver party for $12.50 per child. This included, for a two-hour party, one hour of bowling, rental shoes, bumpers, the use of the party room, a small soft drink, chips, and hot dog or pizza. Invitations were included and the birthday child would receive a souvenir autographable bowling pin bank. These bowling birthday parties are a win-win scenario, and have blossomed since the advent of mandatory smoke-free centers. Marisa (and Im sure other centers hosts) is great with the kids. Thats no surprise, as she and another area bowler, Carol Ann Grant, run a party planning business known as Granted Wishes, LLC. Marisas objective is that we want kids as well as adults to enjoy their party and stress less over the preparation and execution.
