Subramani 1 Vrishank Subramani BL11 Nabila Hijazi Final Paper Part II

Audience Analysis: The audience of this paper will be an eclectic group spread across form local food store managers up the hierarchy of power till it stops at congress as it argues for Genetically Modified Foods in organic food stores. The essay portrays the fight between Genetically Modified foods and Organic foods and how Organic Foods should be consumed in greater portion. The language is slightly scientific and it is my job to put this vocabulary into laymans terms so it can be enjoyed and read by the masses. It uses evidence from scientific journals and other non-fictional websites that are all cited in the works cited page. (edits in red) America is leading the worldwide phenomenon of going green by everything changing every. New techniques are being implemented by various people from all over the business pyramid from CEOs that are moving towards a lower emission business process to School officials that are printing less paper to save trees even to a local households that have started to recycle more of their products instead of being wasteful and throwing everything to sit in landfills forever.<- long sentence maybe add commas or something The agricultural field has also put its best foot forward to fight the impending doom that is global warming by utilizing the tools found in Organic farming. Organic farming and consumption is a fad that has taken the country by storm for the past two decades as it is being popularized by many celebrities across the map who are embracing this green mentality that comes with it. Organic farming has expanded by leaps and bounds from 1990 to 2010 the revenue procured annually has grown by

Subramani 2 20 times the original value (OTA). Though through Newtons third law and the Yin and Yang of nature organic farming has its evil counterpart which is Genetically Modified Food. Genetically Modified Foods demonstrate what is wrong with todays society as they are overrun by technology and harmful chemicals that are slowly eating away at the human population and technology is only making this process easier, as the great environmentalist Alan M. Eddison once said, Modern Technology owes ecology an apology. (Quote Garden), Organic foods currently reign superior to Genetically Modified Foods because of their healthier nutrients, environmental cleanliness, taste better (better taste) and more humane farming qualities.

Organic foods are not something that has recently been introduced into our society but been has had tactics (wtf?) used by the people of the ancient Indus River Valley, The great Indian civilization thrived on organic farming and was one of the most prosperous countries in the world, till the British ruled it (History of Organic Farming). Organic farming has been used by one of the oldest generations in the world and once we discovered these new found chemicals that were supposed to enhance our fruits and vegetables we were moved by them and flocked towards them like a moth to a bright light but what if the answer for sustainability and proper farming actually lies in our past. Another long rambling sentence. These two The Organic ways that our forefathers used to plow and sow their fields were the reason that mother earth has even lived this long because of their previous usage of organic farming and we are deteriorating our ozone layer and environment with pesticides and chemicals what if need to go back to our roots with organic farming. This paper deals with Organic Farming and its effects on the environment and how it should be utilized in favor to the more commonly used practices of injecting foods with

Subramani 3 chemicals and calling them Genetically Modified Foods. Organic farming is stocked with the utilization of proper farming techniques such as Sustainable Agriculture and Organic Gardening (Science Daily) both of which are used to reduce waste and usage of pesticides that are killing our ozone layer. This paper is a testament to Organic Foods and why they are completely necessary in our world today and why Organic Farming needs to make a comeback. It is true that the amount of pesticides in our foods has been steadily increasing since the past (maybe say over the past XXX years) as we are moving to a somewhat more organic culture but by no means should we be complacent. A recent study in the United Kingdom by the PSD (Pesticide Safety Directorate) has proved this statement, recent and worrying evidence, published by the Pesticide Safety Directorate, has shown that in the UK pesticide residues found in non-organic foods were up in 2002 over 2001 (43 compared with 39 percent) (Myers 93). I would change this sentence to: has found that pesticide residues in non-organic foods went up from 39 percent in 2001 to 43 percent in 2002 (Myers 93). This trend shockingly continued upwards as foods that were tested in the next two years also had an increased amount of pesticides and chemicals included inside them. Some of these foods are even violating the health codes set up by the government, 13 percent contained residues over the maximum level set by the government. (Myers 93), if we switch over to a completely organic food system there would not be any pesticides in our foods as the definition of organic foods by the Merriam Webster dictionary is relating to, or grown with the use of fertilizers or pesticides deriving from animal or vegetable matter rather than from chemicals. Not only are Organic Foods safer for the human body but they also contain more nutrients and less water weight therefore are tastier and more nutritious.

Subramani 4 Organic meats and vegetables are tastier to their processed counterparts because of the safer and more humane upbringing and farming. Organic foods have been long tested against supermarket brand foods normally with the organic food often coming out ahead. Time magazine conducted such a study with different foods from organic versus supermarket foods and some of the differences were astonishing. One of the taste tests conducted was Organic eggs versus Supermarket eggs which both mainly tasted the same when cooked except the super market egg had, a hint of almost a sulfurous quality. (Time Magazine Farm vs. Supermarket.) Sulfur not only detracts from the taste of the eggs when cooked but is also harmful for the human body to digest as it can form toxins with oxygen in the human body. Also the supermarket eggs had more of a processed homogenous look to them as the two different egg whites that appeared in the organic egg only appeared as one egg white in the supermarket egg. As expected the organic egg triumphed over the supermarket egg. Reasons for this are because the treatments of the hens that produce the organic eggs in comparison to the hens that gives the processed eggs. The chickens that provide us with the inorganic eggs are raised in an environment of close quarters that doesnt provide for proper growth and are fed run of the mill food as they are mass produced for profit and quantity rather than quality. However their organic brethren are. (fix somehow) Fitday, a periodical went undercover to farms attempting to see how the livestock was being raised and compared organic to inorganic, raised in a more humane, more sanitary way and the production of organic meat has less of an impact on the environment than traditional meat production. (Fitday 2) The organic chickens are allowed to roam free on the green pastures of farms with high quality feed to feast on therefore grow more naturally and are less prone to diseases. Restaurants such as Chipotle should be applauded for their aspirations as they attempt to use as many organic materials in their products. Up and coming food chains are seeing this as

Subramani 5 a way to capture the younger audiences as they have been swayed into eating more organic foods. Also they are not genetically modified; therefore, if one of them is infected it wont necessarily spread to all the other animals with the same DNA structure, as animals that have their genetics modified can all be susceptible to be attacked by the same strands of diseases. These animals have no forms of defense because all of their structures are the same, this is dangerous for farmers as they can lose their whole crop of livestock with one strand of disease. Genetically Modified Foods are thought to be the food of the future since they are being modified to be able to stay fresher longer and be able to be more nutritious than organic foods and these statements are completely false. As a young child the only foods I ate were processed, fatty foods and if I ever ate fruits or vegetables they were always contaminated with chemicals that caused my mouth and throat to be itchy and scratchy as if it was drier than the Mojave Desert. These pesticides and other chemicals on the GMFs lead me astray from fruits and vegetables so badly, that the age of ten my young body was diagnosed with high cholesterol leading me to depression. This further put me on the verge of a mental breakdown at the age of twelve, coupled with asthma my body was on the verge of immobility. Lack of fruits and vegetables in my diet turned out to be a huge problem as I was allergic to most of them. Finally this all peaked at the age of fifteen when I reached a whopping 180 pounds, I visited my doctor and he helped my start making better choices about my diet and eating more organic foods as the chemicals on the skins of the apples and other fruits were nonexistent therefore I had no allergic reaction. Also I was able to find my protein in other sources other than the processed meats as I turned to vegetarianism or only eating organically raised lean meats. Instead of eating fried chicken with fries and a slice of cake for dessert I changed my habits into eating organically grown while piling my plate with heaps of vegetables and biting into a juicy organic Granny

Subramani 6 Smith apple for dessert. Genetically Modified Foods almost ruined my life while organic foods allowed me to make a complete rebirth as I lost 25 pounds of fat which also pushed my asthma to a milder state. ( this paragraph is really good! it) Personally I feel that Genetically Modified foods are a hoax when compared to their Organic counterparts. A potentially dangerous part of Genetically Modified foods is that if a strain of a virus attacks one strand of the Genetically Modified Food they all become poisoned and paralyzed since they have no protection as all Genetically Modified Foods are the same and are unable to adapt to their surroundings unlike organic foods. Genetically Modified foods are also laden with untested pesticides and other chemicals, many of which are not FDA approved or have been tested on human beings in the past and are known to have caused birth defects and cut off parts of the food chain. In the middle of the century, DDT was sprayed on farmland and the chemical made its way into the food chain. (NWF), Peregrine falcons consumed many fish and insects that had faint traces of DDT in them causing the falcons eggs to thin out and not be strong enough for baby falcons to live in the eggs. The food chain was cut from the top down as under population of the Falcons soon caused over population of the mid tiered animals causing starvation among them killing them off, this lead to a disaster and eventually DDT being banned from farming. This was a direct connection to the use of Genetically Modified chemicals and pesticides which attempted to keep the bugs away but almost toppled the food chain from top down and ruined one of the most majestic birds in the world, close to knocking them into extinction. Genetically Modified Foods should be taken off the market while being replaced with a more sustainable, healthier and tastier Organic market. One way to this is that government should subsidize the organic market and make them more affordable so that we the citizens of

Subramani 7 this government can reap the great rewards of organic foods with the prices of the supermarket goop that we are currently ingesting. Organic foods are safer, cleaner more ethical and overall better than Genetically Modified Foods.
