HYMNS INDICTION 1 SEPTEMBER

The Byzantine Creation Era

The Byzantine Creation Era, or "Creation Era of Constantinople," or "Era of the World" (Greek: ' or or ) was the Calendar officially used by the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church from circa 691 to 1728 in the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Byzantine Empire from from 988 to 1453, and in Russia from circa 988 to 1700. Derived from the Septuagint Holy Scriptures, it placed the date of creation at 5,509 years before the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, and was characterized by a certain tendency that had already been a Tradition amongst Hebrews to number the years from the foundation of the world. Its year one - the supposed date of Creation was 1 September, 5509 BC to 31 August, 5508 BC. It is not known who invented this Era and when, however it appears for the first time in the Treatise of a certain Monk and Priest Georgios (638-39), who mentioned all the main variants of the "World Era" in his work. He made it clear that the main advantage of the Byzantine Era was the common starting point of the astronomical lunar and solar cycles, and of the cycle of Indictions the usual dating system in Byzantium since the sixth century. He also already regarded it as the most convenient for the Easter computus the annual Paschal dates. Complex calculations of the 19-year lunar and 28-year solar cycles within this world era allowed scholars to discover the cosmic significance of certain historical dates, such as the Birth/Nativity of Christ and His Crucifixion. This date underwent minor revisions before being finalized in the mid-7th century - although its precursors were developed circa 412 (Alexandrian Era) By the second half of the 7th century the Creation Era was known in the far West of Europe, in Britain. By the late 10th century - circa 988, when the Era appeared on offical government records - a unified system was widely recognized across the Eastern Roman Empire. The Era was ultimately calculated as starting on 1 September, and our Lord Jesus Christ was thought to have been Born in the year 5509 - since the Creation of the world. Thus historical time was calculated from the Creation, and not from Christ's Birth, as in the West. The Eastern Church avoided the use of the Anno Domini system of Dionysios Exiguus since the date of Christ's Nativity was debated in Constantinople as late as the 14th century. Otherwise the Creation Era was identical to the Julian Calender with the following exceptions: the names of the months were transcribed from Latin into Greek, the first day of the year was 1 September - so that both the Ecclesiatical and Civil Calendar years ran from 1 September to 31 August - which to the present day is the Ecclesiastical or Church Year the date of Creation - its year one was 1 September, 5509 BC to 31 August, 5508 BC. The Byzantine World Era was gradually replaced in the Orthodox Christian Church by the Christian Era - which was utilized initially by Patriarch Theophanes I of Karykes in 1597, afterwards by Patriarch Cyril Lucaris in 1626, and then formally established by the Church in 1728. Meanwhile as Russia received Orthodox Christianity from Byzantium, she also inherited the Orthodox Calendar based on the Byzantine Era (translated into Slavonic). After the collapse of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the Era continued to be used by Russia, which witnessed millennialist movements in Moscow in 1492 due to the end of the Church Calendar. In 1700 the Byzantine Era in Russia was changed to theJulian Calendar by Czar Peter the Great and it still forms the basis of Traditional Orthodox Calendars to this day.

The Indiction
Indiction is a term given to identify an era or epoch of years of the calendar that was first used in the late third century to date agricultural and land tax cycles in Roman Egypt. By the late fifth century the Indiction became widely used throughout the Mediterranean. Its use is still reflected in the Christian Church Calendars. The Indiction in the Orthodox Church is 1 September. While the measure of a day and year have been labeled, and changed over the years, for time immemorial, the tagging of a period of years has varied throughout history. Eras or epochs of years have been measured from various starting points have been based on various events. These measures have included counts based upon the cycle of Olympiads, epochs starting from the founding of Rome, on the reigns of Monarchs such as used today in Japan (the Meiji or Showa eras), from the formation of earth, and so on. In much of the world today the enumeration of years is based on the Birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ - although this practice, or epoch, did not become common for centuries after Dionysius Exiguus, a Scythian Monk established this starting point in 527. In the third century in the Roman Empire an epoch measurement became popular and was known as the Indiction. When Indictions began to be used (circa 287), it originated as a cycle of five years. By 314 an Indiction cycle of fifteen years appeared, which became the common measure at the same time that Emperor Constantine the Great recognised Chrsitianity. The use of Indictions for dating documents not related to taxes began in the mid-fourth century. Each indiction itself was not distinctly identified, only the year within the Indiction. Thus, an Indiction may need reference to some other significant event in order to identify a specific Indiction. Additionally, different systems of calculating the Indictions came into use, of which the following are most common: In the Eastern Roman Empire, in the Greek or Constantinopolitan Indictions the first day (of the new year) of the Indiction Year was established initially as 23 September, which was the birthday of Emperor Augustus. This date also became the start of the Eastern Orthodox Church Year. By late fifth century the start of the New Year shifted to 1 September, , which is the present day beginning of the Ecclesiastical Year. In the West, the Imperial or Western Indiction on 24 September was adopted as the beginning of the New Year, apparently based upon calculations under the authority of the Venerable St Bede. Later, in the ninth century Roman or Pontifical Indictions were introduced in the West that began the year on either 25 December or 1 January. http://orthodoxwiki.org/Indiction

Splendid Life, a Virtual Luminary, has shone forth, and with the Rays of Miracles thoroughly has Illumined all the earth, O Devout One. For by a Pillar, as though upon a Ladder, Thou went up to God, where the ultimate object of all desire truly is; and thenceforth Thou has been praying, O Blessed Father, Symeon, for us who honour Thee.
