HI
Hi! This magazine was created for girls
like you - real girls who live in the real world.
Im not perfect, I dont look like a Barbie, I
dont act like a robot, but that is because I
am real. And I dont like reading magazines
that are all about those types of girls - the
ones who are just focused on their looks,
consumerism and male attraction. For that
reason, I created BTW. Its a magazine for
you, for me, for real girls.
While this may not be all about shopping, or celebrities it does focus on
fashion. Fashion is an important part of a girls life and therefore is a big part of
BTW. There are also other articles on a variety of topics. I have tried to keep
the magazine balanced, just like your life. I hope you nd it fun and entertaining
to read, but also learn a few things along the way.
I would love the hear about what you think about BTW, so please email me at
karina.alibhai@stratfordhall.ca
xoxo, Karina

start.
Everybody likes free money, but

Arrive early
- It shows enthusiasm and diligence.
- Also its good to arrive early so you
can make sure youre in the right
place.
Talk the Talk
- Initiate small talk with your co-
workers. It shows friendliness and
openness. Its also a good way to
make friends and feel more
comfortable.
Remember your manners
- Youve heard it a million times from
your parents use your manners, use
your manners. Yes you should use
your pleases and thank yous but
take it up a notch. Use lines like
may I... and my pleasure to
sound more mature.
Bring your tool box
- It helps a lot when you come
organized. It is good to bring a small
bag with your personal must haves
- Lipgloss, mints, mirror, hand
sanitizer, extra hair ties and
clips, cellphone (on silent)
- Notebook and pen to take
notes on instructions
Disconnect your self
- Turn off your phone so it doesn't
ring, beep or buzz while you are
working. Youre getting paid to work
not to text your friends so only
check your phone when you are on
your break.
Huh?
- Ask as many question as you need
to. Its better to ask a hundred
times and to get your job done right
rather than make a mistake. Once
you get instructions its also good to
repeat and conrm what you need to
do.
Smile!
- When you show off your pearly
whites people know youre open and
welcoming.
Dress to Impress
- Wether you are working at a summer
camp, fast food restaurant, or in an
ofce downtown always choose
comfort. You never know what your
co-workers will be wearing, but dress
appropriately and comfortably so
you can focus on your job. Take
mental notes on what everybody
else is wearing for days ahead.
- Here are some ideas that will always
help you succeed
- Summer camp: shorts,
runners, cute t-shirt, hoodie
- Ofce: dress pants, oxford
shirt, ballet ats
- Fast Food Restaurant: black
pants, sneakers, tank top,
cardigan
- Check the next page for more
ideas

Make sure you choose a comfortable outt. You will
most likely be on you feet the whole day, so sneakers
are a good idea. The restaurant will probably have a
uniform, but if not make sure you are wearing
something you dont mind getting a little messy in.
A semi-formal outt will work just
ne for you. Choose something
simple, classy, but also comfortable.
Normally the store you work for will
ask that you dress in their clothes.
Make sure you dress in Western-business attire. This
could be a skirt and a shirt, or a blouse and pant suit.
Observe what your co-workers are wearing to get a
sense of what to wear in the future. If you are wearing
a skirt, make sure its at an appropriate length (at your
knees). Also, choose comfortable shoes. Heels are
ne, as long as you can walk properly in them.

Zoya Jiwa, Aliya Dossa and Selin Jessa are three amazing girls who are leaders
in their respective communities. BTW was able to sit down with them and
have a chat about their experiences and about the voluntary work they are
doing. They recently participated in TEDxKids@BC and shared their
experiences with BTW. Zoya, Aliya and Selin are all very busy, active girls who
take time out of their lives to help and inspire others. All three are
visionaries, leaders and local heroes who are making the world a better place.

BTW: What did you speak about at
TEDxKids@BC?
ZJ: I spoke about my idea of being
'Simply You': nding true beauty within
oneself and embracing the positive,
qualities that make one who they are. I
spoke on body image and the media, as
well as inner beauty and values. I've
always been passionate about the topic
of body image and learning about the
different inuences that contribute to
our society's idea of beauty. With a
strong focus on physical beauty these
days, it is not surprising that inner
beauty is viewed secondarily. My goal
was to emphasize that the 'perfect'
images we see in the media are highly
unattainable because these images are
airbrushed and often extremely
manipulated to the extent that even the
models don't look like themselves. Even though many people know this is the reality, we still
strive to attain this image.
BTW: Why did you choose this topic?
ZJ: Essentially, my goal was to shift people's denition of 'beauty' from being solely
appearance based to looking at the positive, unique qualities that make one who they are. As
I mentioned in my TEDxKids@BC talk, we aren't born knowing what beauty is. Instead, images
have been projected to us as we've grown up to form our entire idea of beauty. Of course,
there are various factors, but what I found that negatively impacted me was the one 'look' that
the media has us aiming to look like: perfection. Having dealt with low self-esteem and self-
image in the past, I wanted to ensure that other young people wouldn't have to go through the
same battle. Based on my personal experience, when I realized how supportive, caring and
awesome the people around me are, I also recognized my own qualities and values that make
me who I am. Surrounding myself with uplifting, positive people made me feel happy and
beautiful, and I wanted others to discover this as well.

BTW: Do you think your talk affected others?
ZJ: I sure hope so! It was really cool that
the audience at TEDxKids@BC was composed
of adults, youth, and children, because the
topics of body image and inner beauty are
applicable to all ages! My intention is for
people to gain an optimistic, new perspective
of the idea of beauty and for people to
recognize the positive aspects that make
them who they are. I hope people feel
empowered by my presentation and are
motivated to talk about the idea of Simply
You with others. It's time to look past the
surface and learn about your own values
rather than how you can try to get into a
smaller dress size or look more like a
celebrity. Of course, I'm not saying that
looks don't matter- but they are certainly
not 'everything.' When one feels beautiful
and happy with who they are, it opens doors
for them to embrace their talents, follow
their passions and shine so brightly! This is
where true beauty shines.
BTW: How did this experience affect you?
ZJ: Speaking at TEDxKids@BC has helped me
gain self-condence, realize my own inner
beauty, and connect with like-minded
individuals who share the same passion of
positively redening the distorted idea of
what many think beauty is. It has also
allowed me to create a positive impact in the
lives of others through a personal experience
that was difcult to deal with at the time.
BTW: Have you carried on with your idea of
Simply You?
ZJ: Yes, I have! I've started the 'Simply You
Health and Wellness Group' at my school,
and it's off to a great start! We focus on
using healthy ways to deal with different
stresses that we face on a daily basis.
Additionally, there is a focus on body image
awareness and embracing inner beauty. I
have turned my passion into action! It has
been a lot of fun so far, and I'm super
excited to see where it goes in the future.
BTW: What are you involved with right now,
and how has your community service
changed you as a person?
ZJ: This year, I founded and now lead the
Simply You Health and Wellness Group at my
school with the help of Ms. Watkins, my
school's Youth Worker. I'm also Co-
president of Student Council and Co-
President of a humanitarian club at my
school. Another initiative I am involved with
is called Project HELLO: Helping Everyone
Locate Loved Ones, which gives residents of
Vancouver's Downtown Eastside the
opportunity to reconnect with loved ones
they have lost contact with.Volunteering in
my school and community has positively
shaped me into the person I am today. It
has become a part of my everyday life, and
it's honestly something I love to do. The
happiness I feel when I volunteer or make a
positive difference in someone's life is
indescribable- it makes me smile so much! I
really enjoy collaborating with others to
create the biggest, most positive impact
possible. As a result, I have developed
many close friendships! Through
volunteering in my school and community, I
have developed leadership skills which will
help me as I grow up. I am an optimistic,
determined and enthusiastic individual
generally and also when it comes to being a
leader. I have learned that helping others is
a passion of mine!

BTW: What was your role in TEDxKids
@BC?
AD: I feel very blessed and fortunate to
have been able to speak at TEDxKidsBC.
My speech was entitled "Sustainability
Begins with a Smile". I spoke about how
nothing is less sustainable than negativity
- a lesson I learnt through co-founding a
student-led initiative called Youth 4 Tap.
Throughout my speech, I told Youth 4
Tap's story about reducing bottled water
usage in schools, while encouraging tap
water. I then explained how we overcame
obstacles by maintaining positive,
sustainable mindsets. One message I
emphasized in my speech, that I would
like to share with you now, is this: In life,
you cannot control what happens to you.
However, how you react to what happens
to you is your decision. So smile!
BTW: What was the most important
lesson you learnt throughout the
experience?
AD: I learnt that even though it can seem like we live in a time of dire apathy, there is and
always will be hope because there are people who care. The audience was so engaged by our
authentic stories, and many people approached me afterwards asking about how they can
become involved. This made me realize just how fortunate I was and am to be able to share my
story with the world, because everyone has a story worth sharing. So now more than ever
before, I "seek to understand and then seek to be understood" (Stephen Covey).
BTW: You are making a difference in your community, what inspired you to do so?
AD: In a concrete sense, in terms of the Youth 4 Tap initiative, "The Story of Bottled
Water" (www.storyofbottledwater.org) served as a piece of inspiration for me. More abstractly
though, what inspires me most undoubtedly are the people around me. My family, my friends,
and my role models. Volunteering in my religous community from a very young age also
inspired me to help others.

BTW: What advice can you give to other girls
who want to make a difference in their
community?
AD:
1. Be optimistic. If you don't believe in
yourself, then why should anyone else?
When things don't go the way you plan,
don't give up. Just know that everything
happens for a reason, learn from your
mistakes and put 110% of yourself into
everything you do.
2. Never be afraid to meet new people. If
you are afraid, overcome your fears by
taking risks and networking. I strongly
believe that much of what I have
accomplished has been a result of talking to
people from a diverse set of backgrounds.
3. Think about what you are passionate
about and then brainstorm ways in which you
can allow your passions to meet
opportunities. You owe it to yourself to do
what you love. Once you nd your passion
(s), try your best to balance the important
things in your life. (i.e. Family, school,
friends, extra-curricular activities, faith, you-
time, etc.)
4. There are many reasons why people
become involved in their communities. While
it looks good on a resume, provides you with
service hours, and may gain you respect
from those around you - make sure you
become involved because you genuinely
care. With much of what I am involved in
now, I went through a process of
distinguishing societal habits that bother me.
For example: wasting food and drinking
bottled water. I then thought of ways in
which I could make a real difference in these
areas. The other perks of becoming involved
should be secondary. Passion comes rst.
BTW: What volunteer work do you
participate in?
AD: I help run a few clubs at my school
including: Youth 4 Tap, through which we
have now saved over 300,000 plastic
bottles from ending up in landlls; Project
Hunger, through which we raise awareness
about food wastage and take action towards
helping the local hungry; and Students
Helping Students, a club where high school
students help local elementary school
students with their homework and other
related issues. I am also very involved with
the United Nations club in my district, where
we discuss and take actions for peace and
human rights. The list goes on and my
purpose for answering your question so
directly is not to sound arrogant but rather
to emphasize the scope of opportunities
with which you can be involved. If there isn't
an opportunity out there that makes your
heart sing, then create one.
BTW: Do you think the service you are doing
in your community is changing others? Has it
changed you?
AD: Yes. It is my hope that I have
signicantly altered the behaviours of
citizens who have been environmentally and/
or socially irresponsible in some way or
another. Being involved and serving my
community has changed me to the point
where it has become a large part of who I
am. And in all sincerity, I do believe that
everyone has the power to be a catalyst for
positive change. No change is too small, and
no time is too late.

BTW: What is TEDxKids @BC?
SJ: TEDxKids @BC (www.tedxkidsbc.com) is an
annual conference that aims to empower kids
and youth around BC and help them reach their
passion. The conference is organized in the TED
format, dedicated to "ideas worth spreading."
We feature young speakers on topics related to
youth, and between sessions, we plan to try
and help kids turn their passion and inspiration
into acton. The next TEDxKids @BC will take
place in October 2012.

BTW: What was the most important lesson you

learnt throughout the experience?
SJ: I've been involved in various youth projects
over the last couple years, and one thing that
TEDxKids @BC taught me was that often we
gravitate towards the same kind of people when
launching these kinds of projects. It's better to
seek a variety of people: our team was made up
of adults and youth, people working, people
studying, software analysts, teachers,
designers, athletes and administrators. And students, of course. Our diversity of thoughts and
perspectives really allowed us to be far more creative during the planning process, contributing
new ideas and new opinions. It was so valuable to work with so many different people, and
from then on, I've been trying to assemble more diverse groups of people for teams and clubs.
BTW: What advice can you give to other girls who want to make a difference in their
community?
SJ: Don't let making a difference in the world seem like a daunting task! Start with something
you're interested in and connect with people or organizations that are passionate about those
same issues or goals. Work with them, and learn from them - supporting an existing
organization is just as admirable as starting your own. Learn as much as you can about that
topic or issue and from there, gure out where you could make your unique contribution. We all
have innite potential and it's up to each one of us to reach for it. The hardest part is to stay
inspired - keep stoking the res by communicating with people passionate about the same
things as you, going to student conferences and setting small goals.

BTW: What other leadership initiatives have
you taken in your community?
SJ: At school, I co-lead a humanitarian club
and I'm involved in my school's community
leadership team, which manages a project
which seeks to reunite the homeless with
people whom they may have lost touch with.
Besides TEDxKids @BC, my other big focus in
the community is environmental issues. In
December, I took part in a student
expedition to Antarctica to learn about the
effects of climate change. I Blogged
throughout my trip to share my experience
with others and raise awareness about this
important issue. My blog can be found on
selinjessa.tumblr.com.
BTW: What service activities would you
recommend for other teen girls to get
involved in? How can others get involved in
TEDxKids?
SJ: There are many different ways to get
involved with TEDxKids@BC 2012! This year,
we are more ambitious than ever. We're
looking for interested youth to join our
planning team, attendees to come to our
events, and people to help spread the word.
Ifyouth areinterested, they should contact
info@tedxkidsbc.com. Other fantastic
opportunities for teen girls are often found in
their schools - leadership teams, green clubs,
and humanitarian organizations. At the same
time, it's important to get involved outside
of your schools - so volunteer at an
organization, or join your city's youth
council!
BTW: What are your dreams for the future?
SJ: For the world, I dream of a place where
people are aware of what's happening around
them, compassionate towards each other,
and able to live in harmony with the Earth.
For myself,I hope to nd myself in a career
where I can keep learning, keep exploring my
curiosity, and create things that help make
the world a better place - and hopefully
enjoy my job so much that it feels more like
play than work. I also hope to inspire others
to get involved in their communities as well.

Feeling Inspired?
You can be amazing, just like these
three girls. You have the potential to
make the world a better place, just
start small but dream big. Every
person, every change, every action
helps. Take action about something
you care about today!

Medical
Skin Secrets
Dos and Donts
for Perfect Skin
Dont Worship The Sun
Sun exposure causes the skin to age faster resulting in wrinkles and dark spots.
It can also cause skin cancer. It is important to use a daily sunscreen. Look for
moisturizers that contain SPF 30.
Do Drink Water
Drinking water moisturizes the skin from inside-out and keeps your skin glowing.
Drink about 8 glasses a day for healthy, hydrated skin.
Dont Smoke
Smoking causes your skin to age faster resulting in dehydrated and dull skin.
Smoking also causes dark spots and wrinkles.
Do Eat Healthy
Eating a balanced diet will give your skin all the nutrients it needs to look its best.
Dont Stress
Stress causes the skin to wrinkle and age faster. It also results in loss of sleep, and as
you know, we all need our beauty sleep.
Do Wash Your Face
Wash your face twice a day to get ride of dirt and bacteria in your pores.
Cleansing you face after wearing make-up is extremely important, too.

Dont Touch Your Face
Your hands and hair have natural oils on
them which can cause acne. Hands also
carry a lot of dirt and bacteria that result in
blemishes on the skin.
Do Moisturize
Moisturizing replenishes the skin and
hydrates it after being cleaned. It prevents
the skin from drying out and helps
reduce the aging process.
Dont Pop Your Zits
Popping zits spreads bacteria and can
cause scaring. While you think popping
or squeezing them is the fastest and
quickest way to get rid of zits, you are in
fact, sending more bacteria deeper into
your pores.
Do Use Non-Comedogenic Make-Up
If you are going to wear make-up,
especially daily, choose non-comedogenic
make-up. It is proven to not cause
blackheads and acne.

Am I in a heal thy relationship?
Respect is a huge aspect of being in a healthy
relationship. Its important that your BF knows
that you respect him, but you also need to
receive the respect back in return. The key is
to treat him how you would want to be
treated.
Do my BF and I respect each other?
YES NO
Does my BF listen to me and always take my
opinion into consideration?
YES NO
If I dont feel comfortable with something, will
my BF back off and drop the subject?
YES NO
Trust is vital to have in any relationship.
Knowing that your BF wont lie to you and will always tell you the truth is important.
Relationships are built on trust, and knowing that you can trust your BF and that he wont let
you down is also important.
Do I feel comfortable telling my BF my deepest secrets? YES NO
Will my BF ever share my secrets with anybody? YES NO
If I talk to my cute guy friends from math after class, YES NO
will my BF be jealous?
Honesty comes hand-in-hand with trust, and is another two way street. Its tough to be honest
with someone without trusting them. You have to be honest with your BF to feel 100%
comfortable, and he should be honest with you too.
Have I ever caught my BF in a major lie? YES NO
Does he always share whats on his mind? YES NO
Do I ever lie to my BF (be honest)? YES NO

Support is being able to count on your BF and knowing that he will be there for you. Its
important to support each other since you are dating, and if your own BF or GF doesnt support
you, who will? While you want him to support you, make sure you are his biggest fan too,
always cheering him on.
Will my BF let me cry on his shoulder after my parents and I get into a huge ght? YES NO
Does he discourage me and inuence me to change my mind for the worse? YES NO
Do I put him down in front of my friends? YES NO
Does he encourage me to do what I want? YES NO
Do I celebrate with him when he accomplishes even the smallest of challenges, like passing the
Bio quiz? YES NO
Communication is key. Its the only way to express your
feelings to each other. You need to tell your BF whats
on your mind, what youre feeling and thinking, and what
you want or need at the time. You have to be able to
communicate with your BF and know you are being
listened to, but you also need to be open to what he has
to say and respect his thoughts too. Being able to talk
to each other is important, as is listening to each other.
Do I sometimes keep a feeling bottled up inside because
I am afraid it's not what my BF wants to hear or because
I dont want to sound silly? YES NO
Is my BF texting or looking around when I am trying to
have a serious conversation with him? YES NO
Does my BF often interrupt me when Im talking?

Do I listen to what my BF has to say? YES NO
Am I open-minded to what my BF has to say?

Want something crunchy like chips... go for some crunchy baby carrots. Carrots are high in
vitamin A and provide you with nutrients, while chips are empty calories.
Want something sweet like an ice cream sundae... try some
avored greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is thick and creamy,
and also is high in calcium and protein. Try adding some
berries for sweetness and ber.
Want something to dip your veggies and crackers in... use a
low-fat avored cream cheese. Low in calories and just as
good as other dips.
Want some rice to go with your chinese takeout... boil some quinoa instead. This grain has
a nutty avor, similar to brown rice, but is very high in protein.
Want a grilled cheese sandwich... try having some cheese and whole grain crackers. You are
still having your cheese and carb, but are skipping out on
the butter and oil used to make the grilled cheese.
Want crispy bacon for breakfast... try turkey bacon. It
has half the amount of fat and calories, and tastes
pretty similar.
Want to munch on
something salty...
pop a bag of low
calorie popcorn. There are now 100 calorie bags, so you
dont have to feel bad about nishing the whole bag.
Want something creamy like a milkshake... try making
your own smoothie. In a blender mix about 1/2 cup of
yogurt, with a 1/2 cup of milk and 1 cup of frozen or
fresh fruit. Add sweetener or ice to taste.

Read the Book
Im Alice I Think - Susan Juby
This book is about a 15 year old girl who
lives in a very small town in BC. She lives
with her weird family; her mom, dad and
brother. This book is her personal journal
about her experience entering grade 10
after being home schooled for most of her
life and how she completes, or tires to
complete her list of life goals. Reading this
book, helped me realize that although I
think my life is bad, others have it way
worse than me. It was a bit confusing at
times, but soo funny! There were times
when I actually laughed out loud. It is a
good book and an easy read and I would
recommend it.
This Years Model - Carol Alt
This book is about a young model named
Mac. She starts off just modeling to raise
money for university, but her gig turns into
a full time profession. As her profession
grows, she discovers herself and the true
business of modeling. She meets other
models and learns about friendship through
her experiences. It is a very good book,
and was very entertaining to read. It was
denitely not what I was expecting. Before
I read this book, I thought modeling was
fun and an easy job, but this book, while its
just a story, taught me about the real life a
model and how its just not that fun.

Love and Peaches - Jodi Lyyn Anderson
Birdie, Leeda and Murphy are three women
who have gone their separate ways, but as
summer times rolls in, they all nd their
ways back home to Georgia. They are
united by the peach orchard, the place
where they grew up. The three women are
all facing their own problems, and come the
to orchard hoping to move on and
remember home. This is a heart-warming
story about friendship, romance and nding
yourself. I found it to be similar to The
Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants. It was a
fun story and a good read. After reading it,
I discovered that it was a part of the
Peaches trilogy. It may have been easier to
understand if I read the other books rst,
so I would recommend that.
