Objective: To utilize Advanced Digital Systems to perform S-parameter analysis of numerous transmission line circuits. To utilize Motorola Impedance Matching Program (MIMP) to perform preliminary tuning of circuits and eventually use ADS to confirm MIMP tuning. Frequency selected : 2.6 GHz Problem#1-A The quarter wavelength transformer designed as calculated by linecalc tool was: W = 134.647244 mil L = 680.952756 mil Problem#1-B For the operating frequency of 2.6 GHz, the marker was seen to point at the open circuit point when port 2 was short circuited. In this problem since port 2 is short circuited; so we were supposed to get the marker at the short circuit point. But the due to the quarter wavelength transformer of electrical length = 90 deg; if we move 90 deg along the direction to the generator we reach at this open circuit point.
Re-simulating the problem to twice this frequency means we are actually using our previous design as a transmission line having electrical length of 180 deg than 90 deg. This can be also verified by using the linecalc tool (Fig 1).
Fig 1: Linecalc showing 180 deg. Hence 180 deg towards the generator from the short circuited port 2 points to the same short circuit point. Similarly for thrice the frequency the electrical length is 275 deg. So 275 deg towards the generator again leads to open circuit.
Problem#1-C For the operating frequency of 2.6 GHz, the marker was seen to point at the open circuit point when port 2 was open circuited. In this problem the port 2 is open circuited; so we were supposed to get the marker at the open circuit point. But the due to the quarter wavelength transformer of electrical length = pi/2; if we move pi/2 along the direction to the generator we reach at this short circuit point. Re-simulating the problem to twice and thrice this frequency pointed at open and short points due to same reason as before in problem#1-B.
The impedance of quarter wavelength transformer for the give source impedance of Z0 = 50 ohm and load of ZL = 100 ohm was calculated as Z1 = (Z0 ZL) =70.71068 ohm At twice the designed frequency again as before the electrical length becomes 180 deg and on moving 180 deg toward the generator we reach at x (impedance) = 0 line again for which r > 1. And the value of r is given by R = Z1 ZL + j Z1 tan ( l ) ; l = 180 deg Z + j Z 1 L tan ( l ) So R = ZL = 100 ohm And r = 2 And at thrice the designed frequency we aging return back to the matched point. This return to the matched point happens for every odd harmonics of the designed frequency.
