Abstract

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are one of the major problems challenging the health care system in general. This has led to the recent interest in searching for other sources of antibiotics especially in a developing country like the Philippines where many people cannot afford to buy expensive antibiotics.

The antimicrobial effect of Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) ethanolic flower extract was tested against two common bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using agar well diffusion method. Different concentrations (25%, 50% and 100%) of the flower extract were used to test against the pathogenic bacteria collected from the Jose Abad Santos General Hospital laboratory. Zones of inhibition produced on agar plates were measured and compared with the positive control set up (with Tetracycline and Chloramphenicol) to verify any significant difference. There was no zone of inhibition observed on any of the concentrations tested for both bacteria. Sampaguita flower extract proved to be ineffective in inhibiting the growth of the test organisms.
