5. At this juncture, those Candidates who are already sponsored by Shipping companies may be selected by the academy if the candidates are considered to be satisfactory in all respects after going through the admission procedure. 6. A list of selected candidates for all Shipping Companies (together with a waiting list) will be put up on the notice board soon after the interviews are over. Fees once paid by confirmed candidates will not be refunded under any circumstances.

The academy will not be responsible for any communication which is sent either by post or courier or lost in transit. We request not to seek information by phone as it takes a lot of working time of our staff. In this regards, we prefer Emails. The Managements decision regarding admission will be final and binding on all concerned. No representation of any sort will be entertained in this regard. The Course for the 7th batch will commence in MidAugust, 2012. Brief Details about the Course The Alternate Training Scheme for Marine Engineers basically follows the Model Course 7.04 of the IMO and is divided into Phases as given below (We have given details upto Class IV Engineer Officers Examination. More Details can be obtained from the META Manual Vol. I & II published by D. G. Shipping). However, we are required to train upto the third phase only. As new STCW convention is on the anvil, some of these details (especially from phase 4 onwards) can change as per the D.G.S. directives in the coming days. The present intake capacity as approved by the Director General of Shipping is 20 trainees per batch annually. Phase 1: Classroom & Practical Training in our Academy for 12 months and mandatory courses. Phase 2: Training on Board Seagoing Ships as Engineer Cadets for minimum 9 Months Phase 3: Classroom & Practical Training in our Academy for 12 months. After this, the Engineer Cadets will have to pass the examination conducted by MMD (Mercantile Marine Department of Govt. Of India), consisting of all the subjects covered under Class IV, Part A Examination. Phase 4: Seagoing Service as Assistant Engineer Officer on Watch for 6 Months.

Phase 5: Preparatory Courses including Engine Room Simulator, AFF, PSC & Medical First Aid total time required - about 3 Months. After this, the Engineer Officer will have to pass Class IV, Part B examination, before going back as Assistant Engineer or Engineer Officer on Watch. The Subject of Courses of various Modules in first 3 phases is given in the Course Outline in the prospectus. A Special Note Placement during 2nd phase of ATS It may be noted that sponsorship of shipping companies is an essential part of this training for 2nd phase. During this phase, the trainee has to undergo training of 9 months on board a sea going vessel having a propulsive power of more than 750 KW. A shipping company has to sponsor the trainee, or in other words, has to agree to put him on one of the ships owned or managed by it. Needless to say this company is providing a valuable opportunity for a good career to the candidate. Sincere hard work and loyalty will be expected in return. It should be noted that for the second phase of training when the candidate is required to sail on board a ship, the academy acts as a facilitator between the candidate and the shipping company for the sponsorship if required. We also welcome and in fact encourage a candidate who has managed to get a sponsorship from any shipping company on his own, provided he satisfies all the other entry criteria. The sponsorship for the second phase is confirmed by DBMA before admitting a candidate in first phase usually through a letter from sponsoring company stating accordingly. The details of the Fees and Estimates of other Expenses for ATS Course are given in the Prospectus. We do not charge any fees during second phase/year. Some companies do pay stipend to the trainees during second phase.

It should be noted that DBMA does not give any Degree or Diploma but a certificate on successful completion of training. This is recognised by D.G. Shipping as necessary qualification for appearing at Cl. IV Part A exams. We will be making efforts to get a Degree or Diploma from a University for this course in the coming days, but presently we award only a Certificate. For a career as a Sailing Marine Engineer, Certificates of Competency issued by D.G.S. is required and not any degree or diploma.
