Last week I met with my Faculty Advisor at the seminary concerning my paper & project for the Doctor of Ministry program. Ive completed the required classes that I have been attending on Wednesdays during the last two years and am now in the final year of the program. This is the year where my classmates & I focus on writing which we started earlier this year. I still spend time on Wednesdays either at the seminary or at a convent where I can write without distraction. If all goes well I will have my Colloquium or presentation to the faculty sometime in the Spring of 2014. Though this opportunity for continuing education required a lot of time for reading, class attendance and now this paper, it has been extremely rewarding for me spiritually and in my ministry. Thank you for your support & prayers as I enter these final semesters. After a few days enjoying the last week of summer for school children, I am anxious to return to daily life at St. Stephen. Somehow it doesnt seem possible that school is back in session. But time moves on quickly and you will find the parish calendar for the month of September included in the bulletin this weekend. At least we have Labor Day to look forward to as one final opportunity to say goodbye to summer & to welcome the events of the Fall season. But first we have our Parish Picnic to enjoy this weekend. Its just a simple gathering where we can enjoy some food & good company with other members of the parish community. Please join us as I offer my thanks to Bev Zeigler for coordinating this event & for all who are helping to make it enjoyable.

DEACON'S CORNER: The Wayne County Fair takes place Sept. 6-12. St. Stephen Parish is required to man the Catholic Community booth on Sept. 11, from 10:00 in the morning until 10:00 at night. Please sign-up in the gathering room if you would like to man the booth that day. Pope Francis emphasized three things at World Youth Day, and they can really pertain to each of us. 1)We need to go out and spread the Gospel. 2)We should not be afraid to do this because the Holy Spirit will be with us. 3)We are called to serve our neighbor. We can do all three of these by manning the Catholic Community booth at the Wayne County Fair. WAYNE COUNTY FAIR: Our parish's day to man the booth at the Wayne County Fair is Wed. Sept. 11. If you would like to help or are just interested in information about the booth, please call me at 440328-6579. I will be putting out a sign-up sheet for those who would like to man the booth, so even if you have told me in the past that you would like to help, please take the time to sign-up and let me know what time of day you could help. If you would like to donate to this good work of spreading the gospel, please make your check out to St. Anne Parish in Rittman and we will pass it on to Sr. Joan. Thank you, Dcn. Pete Ladies Guild Congratulations to our 3 scholarship recipients - Angela Landrum, Tony Dempsey, and Max McLain. All 3 will receive $250.00 from The Ladies Guild. Angela will be attending Ohio Wesleyan University, Tony, John Carroll University and Max, Franciscan University. Again, congratulations and good luck in the fall!!

Meals & More Volunteer this week: Paul & Barb Chamberlin. What is the Difference between Mortal Sin and Venial Sin?! Mortal sin destroys the divine power of love in a persons heart, subsequently; it breaks with God, whereas venial sin only strains the relationship with him. Mortal sin opposes an important value, for instance, directed against life or God---murder, blasphemy, adultery; committed with full knowledge and full consent. Venial sins are opposed to secondary values such as honor, truth, and property and are committed without full knowledge of their seriousness or without full consent of the will. They disrupt the relationship with God but do not sever it. (From the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church) (Youcat #315 Church Picnic This Sunday at Noon!!! If you can help us out in this effort, please bring your baked goods in before each Mass on August 31 and September 1.
