Auto detection Plug and play installation of inverters in different PV system types
The intelligent inverter that automatically detects the PV-system configuration.
With the Auto detection function Danfoss Solar Inverters will detect the actual PV system configuration. Then the inverter will automatically select the correct inverter setting. The Auto Detection function makes it easy to use the inverter in systems with individual PV strings, as well as in larger systems with parallel PV strings and Master/Slave configuration. One inverter fits different PV system types: In smaller systems it is often necessary to place PV modules on roof sections with different orientation and inclination in order to get enough space for the modules. To optimize energy production in this case, the inverter offers up to 3 individual PV inputs, each with its own MPP tracker. In systems placed on large roofs, all PV modules normally have the same orientation and inclination. In such applications, the energy production is optimized by connecting the PV inputs in parallel and letting the inverter run in Master/slave mode. The Danfoss Solar Inverter fits all systems. The same inverter can run in both individual and Master/slave mode. In addition, the inverter now automatically detects the actual system type and automatically switches to the correct operations mode.

Auto detection is available in inverters with 2 or more PV inputs.

Behind the news technical information

Auto detection Auto detection ensures the inverter operation mode and is always optimized for the actual PV sting configuration. This Auto detection test is carried out after the inverter has connected to the grid. During the test, the inverter continues to produce energy, so the test has no influence on the yield. The PV configuration test takes 1-2 minutes to complete. When to use individual string or parallel string (Master/Slave) configuration? If the strings of an installation are different, or if they display different operating conditions, then individual operation is recommended. If the strings are identical and always display similar operating conditions, then a parallel configuration is recommended. Figure 1 All PV inputs are individually connected to separate PV strings. Each DC-module has its own independent MPP tracker to control and optimise PV string output. If a string disconnects because of insufficient solar radiation or a failure, the other strings continue generating power, thus maximising the total energy yield. Advantages: Possible to use different PV-modules Possible to use different numbers of PV-modules on each string Different orientation possible Different solar radiation due to Shadows, for example Figure 2 The PV inputs are connected in parallel in order to obtain higher efficiency, also during periods with low solar radiation. All DC modules function as one input module with one MPP tracker. When sufficient solar radiation is available, the first DC-module starts. This DC-module will then be called the Master. During the day, when more power becomes available, one or two DC-modules will be activated (depending on the level of power available). Advantages: Optimises energy yield with low radiation, since only one DC-module is operating (avoids energy losses from the other DC-modules) maximising total energy yield. The parallel configuration can be carried out at the inverter site. The wiring required is a part of the standard inverter package. Field experience From the birth of Danfoss Solar Inverters, it has been possible to use the same inverter for either individual or parallel configuration. The next step seemed obvious let us make the inverter intelligent so that it can detect and configure its own settings according to the PV configuration the Auto detection was born. By doing this we have increased the reliability of the installer and added flexibility to the system design. The feedback from the field is clear on this matter. The option to have different configuration possibilities in one and the same inverter, now also including an auto detection function, is unique in the market.
