Red, white and blue are iconic. These colors reflect freedom, optimism and a youthful spirit.
Tommy Hilfiger
Tommy red defined the spring collection. There are an endless number of ways to work with these colors. Men can pull it off, too, especially with increasingly popular colored denim. Our most savvy customers know how to add a piece of red, white and blue to their existing wardrobe to make their own look that suits them. Its not a stretch, Baxter says. Others like the cue they get from runways and displays, he adds, noting particularly strong sales of navy-and-white and redand-white dresses this year. Theres a spike in red before Valentines Day and dark green before Christmas, Baxter says, but those colors have so many other colors and symbols glitz, snowflakes and hearts, for example that the message is a little more diluted. Novelty prints can be dangerous, anyway, especially the ones that are cute in very small doses but quickly become kitschy, according to Daman. Prints are where its easy to go over the top and become cliche. Id say that for the moose sweater at Christmas or head-to-toe stars and stripes.

We love
Families operate local fireworks stands to raise money, have fun
By Eryn Shay Johnson ejohnson@postregister.com Crackling snaps and bangs are imbedded in Americas history and are an icon that every man, woman and child is familiar with: fireworks. Fourth of July celebrations come with many traditions; the parade, a bar-bque or a picnic, but non as prominent as our sparking, whizzing, banging favorites. When the holiday season rolls around, tents and trailers start popping up around the city, almost born over night with the anticipation of selling fireworks. Two residents of Idaho Falls have been in this business for 19 years. For Vince and Betty Harris the stands are more than just a way to raise some funds, it has become its own tradition. When we first started it was to earn a little extra money, said Vince whose brother gave them the idea from his stand in Twin Falls. At the time we had four small kids, this was a good way to earn some money for college, church missions and projects they wanted to do. Our kids have kids now, added Betty. Our grandkids help us sell, they help us set up and stay up at night with the tent. Its been 20 years since they started but Vince says it feels more like 30. There are more and more regulations all the time, he said. And money has been tighter these last couple years with the economy, but its a wholesome family activity. It is a great thing to be a part of. Others go into the business purely because of the love of fireworks. Jared Jensen owner of ACME Fireworks based out of Jefferson County started small but has grown in the 21 years since he began selling. We love fireworks ourselves, he said. We were interested and started a little stand. Now we have three stands in Idaho Falls and one in Bannock County, but over all we have 38 stands. One thing to change is competition. The bigger the better, they say, but anyone has a shot at making a buck. In 2012 the west side of town had six stands, more than previous years. The Harriss are running only one tent this year in the parking lot of the Old Ernst Building and Arbys. But in past years they have had as many as four.

chasing and distributing of illegal aerial fireworks, which can be frustrating as well. Vince, who is a retired police officer, said that even though the fireworks may be considered illegal there are still stands that sell them in the area. Its really frustrating to see people drive out of town to purchase the illegal
Fireworks are a family thing. It is a wholesome activity for the whole family, the shine in the kids eyes it is almost like Christmas to them.
The profits wont be as big this year, Vince said. But my wife and I will be together most of the time. In past years shed usually be at one stand and I would be at another. In previous years the couple relied on hiring people to come and work for them, but with one stand they can run as a family and not rely on outside help. For bigger organizations help is something that is always needed. We have a lot of great families in the area that help; it always varies from town to town, Jensen said. Some groups do it as a fundraiser others do it to raise money for a vacation to take together. Its just an extra shot at some money this time of year. For the Harris keeping it in the family means they can make more and cut out the risk of employee theft. But with all the family tied up in running the stand, one has to wonder if they are missing out on the Fourth of July Celebrations. We celebrate the Fourth later on, Vince said. Usually on the 5th or the 6th, it is a sacrifice but its worth it. The biggest challenge both Jensen and the Harris face is time. There are eight days to sell, with the exception of New Years Eve, said Jensen. Its a big risk. The stands are able to generate thousands of dollars in a good year. Of course there are outside forces, such as the pur-

fireworks. The worst part is that they are sold close by, in Rexburg or Fort Hall, there are a lot of people who drive to Wyoming to get them, he said. They make you sign waivers that say youll take them to Montana or places where they are legal, but there is no way to make sure of that and there arent enough officers to enforce it. Since the couple started dabbling in the business in 1994 things have changed but mostly in terms of safety. Individuals operating stands and tents are no longer allowed to sleep with the stock; instead they must remain awake at night, a 12hour period where there are no sales. The fire department also makes sure that the stands have all the necessary equipment in case a fire does break out and take preventative measures for the night shift. But after all the safety restraints, the bare bones is just helping families celebrate the freedom this holiday season represents. Fireworks are a family thing, said Vince. It is a wholesome activity for the whole family, the shine in the kids eyes it is almost like Christmas to them. Its a whole lot cheaper than Christmas too. But just seeing those kids eyes light up, its worth it. From fountains and sparklers Jensen and the Harris believe that fireworks are a great family activity and selling them is just another way to bring families together.

alcohol until a certain age, but there is no age limit on explosives, Anderson said. We spend all year telling our kids dont play with matches, blow out candles, etc. but then this time of year we tell them its okay to play with fire. Its a kind of contradicting message we send them. Anderson wants to remind parents to not let their children use fireworks without supervision and keep water handy. The department also wishes to express that fireworks are explosives and should be treated as such. Do not stand over
them or point them at another individual. Another way to stay safe is to be conscious of the material in the clothing being worn. Nylons, polyester and spandex are all flammable and when ignited can melt to skin and cause serious burns. Anderson recommends that cotton clothing be worn during the Fourth of July season to avoid mishaps. Childrens pajamas are often made of flammable material and some baby blankets also include these fibers. To avoid harm watch over children and encourage wear-
ing cotton clothing. When the night is over and it is time to clean up, the best way to avoid damage to homes is to douse the firework with water and dispose of them in metal containers. Use a trash can outside of your home and garage and avoid hot embers. If it is too hot to touch it is too hot to dispose of. People like to celebrate with fireworks, Anderson said. But we need to keep in mind that we have veterans in the area that may suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Be mindful of them on the
Fourth and try to minimize your noise level. Animals can also be affected by firework sounds. Alert neighbors with pets that there will be loud noises to avoid dogs and cats from running away. Overall Anderson wishes everyone to have a fun and enjoyable firework season. Fireworks may be used from June 24 until July 5 and are considered a noise violation after midnight. For more information or specific rules contact the fire department at 612-8495.

eastbound only, both lanes, to provide egress for fireworks-related traffic. The morning parade will have its own set of street closures, as the parade route follows Fourth Street from Holmes down to South Boulevard until it reaches Tautphaus Park. Expect these streets to close around 8 a.m. Drivers are urged to use caution in this area as there will be a large amount of pedestrian traffic. The intersection at South Boulevard and 17th street will be closed twice that morning, once for the 5K and the second time for the parade. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. Ash Street will close after the parade to accommodate foot traffic to and from the Liberty Festival and firework display. The Idaho Falls Police Department wishes to remind everyone that alcoholic beverages are illegal in city parks and that the open container laws will be enforced. Be mindful of other drivers as the firework celebration draws to a close, and pay attention to officers directing traffic. Sergeant Dave Frei of the IFPD wishes everyone to enjoy the best Independence Day Celebration in the area. Have a fun and safe celebration.

A healthy lemonade chilled with a patriotic glow
RED, WHITE AND BLUE LEMONADE
Start to nish: 25 minutes, plus freezing Servings: 6 3 cups cubed seeded watermelon (the redder the better) 3 cups cleaned and rinsed fresh blueberries 3/4 cup well-stirred lite coconut milk 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup water 1 cup fresh lemon juice Fresh mint leaves, to garnish In a blender, puree the watermelon until it becomes liqueed. Pour the watermelon liquid into ice cube trays (you should have enough liquid for twelve 2-tablespoon cubes). Rinse out the blender, add the blueberries and puree until the mixture is smooth. Transfer the blueberry puree to another ice cube tray. In a third tray, divide the coconut milk between 6 cubes. Transfer all of the trays to the freezer and freeze until solid, preferably overnight. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool. In a pitcher combine 1/2 cup of the sugar syrup with the lemon juice. Add 3 cups of cold water, then taste and add additional sugar syrup if desired. Chill until ready to serve. To serve, place 2 watermelon cubes, 2 blueberry cubes and 1 coconut cube in each of 6 rocks glasses. Top the glasses with lemonade, then garnish with mint. Let sit for 10 or so minutes to allow the cubes to melt slightly and avor the lemonade.

By Sara Moulton Associated Press If youve never tasted fresh lemonade, you dont know what youre missing. Its just so much more vivid than the supermarket stuff, much more about the lemon and less about the sugar. True, juicing the lemons can be a pain, but the process becomes very near painless if you start by softening the lemons in the microwave for 30 seconds. Then all you have to do is add sugar syrup a mixture of sugar and water, heated until the sugar is dissolved and some cold water. Done. In short, its hard to top fresh lemonade all by itself. Still, for those so inclined, there are plenty of ways to gild this lily. You can infuse the sugar syrup with fresh herbs. You can add seltzer. You can combine it with other fruit juices, including cranberry, apple and pomegranate. Or and here is the heart of todays recipe you can glorify it with flavor-packed ice cubes. My favorite ice cubes for lemonade (or iced tea) are pureed fruit cubes. Almost any fruit will work. Just puree it, pour the puree into ice cube trays and freeze them. The right tool for this job is a blender, which purees the fruit more completely than a food processor or an immersion blender. Of course, you can still use those other tools if theyre the only ones you have at hand. By the way, if you want to get all fancy, youre welcome to strain the puree before you freeze it, though the gain in smoothness will also mean a loss in fiber. In celebration of the Fourth of July, well dress up our lemonade with three different kinds of cubes watermelon, coconut and blueberry for red, white and blue. Holiday aesthetics and

electrifying flavor aside, this drink is almost absurdly healthy. Every glass contains a half-cup each of blueberries and watermelon. By the way, I used to think watermelon was a loser, nutritionally all sugar and no substance. I was wrong. Watermelon happens to be an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of A, as well as lycopene, potassium and magnesium. And calorie-wise, its very modest. A full cup of diced watermelon clocks in at 46 calories. Theres no confusion about the virtue of blueberries, which are packed with antioxidants. Theyre also a good source of vitamin C and fiber. Finally, they team up
beautifully with lemon juice. Thinking of a bright white fruit with which to fill out my tri-color team of ice cubes wasnt easy. Happily, during a rummage through the cupboard I stumbled upon a can of lite coconut milk. As everyone knows, fruit and coconut go together like fireworks and the Fourth of July. One of the most appealing aspects of this libation is that its flavor mutates and deepens as the cubes melt slowly in the glass. I suggest giving the process a head start by letting the drink stand for a bit before serving, then encouraging your guests to take their time drinking. Tell them the effect will be like a kaleidoscope for the mouth.
