ESSAY 3 QUESTIONS
Answer these questions in essay format, using the instructions provided in Assignment Instructions. Review the Essay 2 Grading Rubric to see how your essay will be graded. 1. Trace the development of the topic of your research paper through all three structures of your memory, according to the Dual Store Model. At each stage, give the verbal or visual stimulus and the cognitive processing for transferring information between stages. 2. Describe the use of encoding, elaboration, and organization in storing in your LTM one of the Theories of Learning we have studied to date. 3. Name a concept you have recently forgotten (test question?). Give four possible explanations for the forgetting. 4. Develop a mnemonic for learning the Retrieval Cues, as either Serial Learning or Paired Associate Learning. State the cues, the kind of list, and the mnemonic. THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL ANXIETY ON LEARNING Input (research paper assignment given to class) SENSORY REGISTER Attention (research paper content, research paper assignment due date, percentage of grade) SHORT TERM WORKING MEMORY (choose a topic the effect of social anxiety on learning) LONG TERM MEMORY (complete research paper assignment the effect of social anxiety on learning making sure to address each item listed in grading rubric) Sensory Register According to Brock (n.d.), the sensory register: (1) Receives large amounts of information from the senses and for a very brief period of time. (2) Assuming adequate acuity, information is automatically registered as a literal copy of input. (3) Quickly decays if person does not attend to the sensory (4) If visual (less than one second), if auditory (2-4 seconds) (5) Does not move information automatically and directly to the working memory. Instead it must be attended to. Short term /working memory According to Brock (n.d.), short-term working memory is: (1) The place where information currently being attended is stored. 2. The place where the mind operates on information organizes it for storage or discarding, and connects it to other information. (4) Sensory register and long term memory both provide information to the working memory. (5) Often this happens at the same time. Long term memory According to Brock (n.d.), long-term working memory is: (1) The location where information is kept for a long time. (2) No known limits. (3) Typically stored in semantic form (4) Includes facts and general knowledge.

Example
1. Read the Psych 365 syllabus (research paper assignment). 2. Text is placed in sensory register. 3. I choose to pay attention to the stimuli. 4. I perceive the words and understand their meaning. 5 Information from both the sensory register and long term memory are simultaneously placed in my working memory. 6 . I continue to read (More words are seen, perceived, and understood.) 7. Main ideas are identified (research paper requirements) , less important details are discarded (removed from the desk top). 6. Can maintain details long enough to make a note and go on. 7. Access other information from long-term memory to help store new learning (e.g., explorers, Columbus) 8. With rehearsal and coding, the learning may become a never to be forgotten fact.
