We are allowing uploading of images through CaFE this year. CaFE is a company where you can upload your painting, fill in your data form and pay your entry fee all in one. We are still accepting CD/DVDs for those who are uncomfortable with uploading their image. For instructions for Uploading your image go to our web page. Deadline for the Member show entries uploaded is April 6, 2013. Mailed entries must be postmarked by April 6, 2013. This year promises to be an exciting year as we continue take NWS into the digital age. Our new membership management system, Wild Apricot, was definitely a first step to completing this goal. Here you will find your member profile, all information about NWS, including newsletters, bylaws, prospectus, member news, workshop registrations and photos from past events. You are be able to update your own member record, change addresses, email addresses and web page addresses whenever needed. This will be particularly handy for our Snow Birds who move often during the year. You also soon will be able to sign up for workshops and demos, and upload images for our shows. We are linked to PayPal for easy dues renewal and donations. We are here to help you learn and make use of our new system and we will leave no member behind. As your returning President, I am grateful for a wonderful Board of Directors, enthusiastic volunteers and an awesome membership. This should be a great year; contact me if youd like to help or have concerns. I look forward to working with all of you. Sincerely, Linda A Doll NWS President

NWS in the Digital World

By N.C. swan What has changed? forward. We were unable to put many of them in the newsletter because entry deadlines did not coincide with our print deadlines. Also, there are many other websites where Calls for Entry can be found. Digital Exhibition Submission The use of digital cameras is ubiquitous, and for the past several years NWS has accepted these images for jurying. However, as digital submission has become the standard, processing and managing so many images on a personal computer has become an enormous task. So, this year, we are initiating a new digital submission process, using a site that will allow NWS to set the criteria, oversee the large quantity of digital data, while automatically ensuring that images are correctly sized and all the information is filled in prior to submission. The old method of entry is still available for those who wish to submit a printed form with a CD, DVD or flash drive, paid for by check and mailed. Video/phone Conferencing Good News! National Watercolor Society is accessible to new board members and volunteers no matter where you live. We are using digital solutions to connect with members electronically. This means that anyone can participate in meetings without traveling to board meetings and can serve on a committee if they have a computer or can conference in by phone to share what they are doing with other members. We will even make our annual meeting open to members who want to watch on-line through video conferencing or listen in by phone. Watch your email for an invitation if you are a member. It will provide you with a log-in code. Join us next time and consider getting more active as a member in a connected world of artists.

s the world becomes more connected through digital media, the National Watercolor Society has been quickly working toward keeping up and staying relevant without leaving any of our valued members behind. This past year we have made several changes in this direction. NWS is now connecting with members more and more electronically, and reaching out to members who live around the world through email, a new interactive website, social media, and online meetings.

Our Website More information is available to members on our website. As a member, when you log-in you can manage your own personal information, for example: change your address as often as needed, see all your own submissions from past years, and find email addresses for other members. The Newsletter While we still print our newsletter in black and white for mailings, more and more members have opted to receive information in a more immediate manner and get their newsletters in color via email and our website. Not only does it offer the added benefit of higher resolution photos and the capability to zoom in, but NWS is able to save expensive printing and mailing costs. As we move in this direction, we will be able to use that money to improve member services. If you are interested in helping the organization in this way by getting your newsletter exclusively in a digital format, please send a request to Linda Doll at NWSpresident@
gmail.com

In addition, Look for the Calls for Entry that have previously appeared in the newsletter to be exclusively on our website going

ART SHIPPING - 101

By Penny Hill, director annual exhibition Use the correct packaging; no loose materials; they shift and, believe me, here in earthquake country, we know shifting. And you might be saying this is silly right??? No its not, its helpful and necessary. I have seen every entry to our show including the review entries and it was scary. NWS considers each work to be a masterpiece and that it represents your best offering for that exhibition. We give great amounts of time and effort to ensure you are represented well. Please honor your own accomplishments with the same love. Namaste Penny Hill, Exhibitions Director Examples of the DIVA treatment :

o my fellow members you have painted a masterpiece, its been accepted into the show, and you have stopped jumping up and down and are now getting to the tricky part of shipping your painting. Remember throughout this article as you review the IKEA style instructions this is a masterpiece you are sending and it deserves DIVA treatment. Please, please avoid using packaging that has been around the world more than once. If all thats holding it together is duct tape or worse then think again. Get advice from your shipping store on all the regulations and stipulations.

Right: A new undamaged sturdy box with clearly printed info on un/repacking as well as the return address and the name of the artist written on the foam cushion..

Left: The painting wrapped and labeled in a clear sleeve. Note the cushioning in the insert that holds the painting..

Take the time to review your return labels make sure all the information is correct. Chandler keeps a photographic record, as do we at NWS, when something comes in damaged and we do our best to work with you to enable a piece to be in the show.

Right: Inserted Masterpiece.

Right: We will be sending a number label for the side of the box as well as an NWS neon label. We also suggest a label with a picture of the painting for the box as a double check for the contents.
