Archers ready to rebound from tough year

ANTWERP After last season when the
Antwerp Archers seemed to have more in-
juries than touchdowns, head coach Drew Al-
timus is cautiously optimistic about the 2013
version of Archer football.
Graduating eight seniors from the 0-10
squad, the Archers gave up 50 points a game
while scoring just nine.
It was a tough year with all the injuries.
Towards the end of the season there was a
time I started five freshmen on offense and
five on defense, said the head mentor.
The veteran coach of 17 years welcomes
back several key players.
Offensively, leading rusher Nick Barn-
house returns. Barnhouse, an Honorable
Mention GMC player from a year ago as a
sophomore totaled 662 yards.
Teammate and team leader Derek Smalley
returns for his senior season. Smalley, who
played the quarterback, receiver, and split
end position due to many injuries totaled 535
total yards of offense. He also was named
Honorable Mention on the GMC roster.
The Archers return 12 different players
who started last campaign while eight defen-
sive players return.
Defensively, Coach Altimus returns lead-
ing tackler Tyler Messman. As a sophomore
last season, Messman racked up 100 tackles
from the linebacker spot. Smalley totaled 95
tackles while Barnhouse had 65.
Currently, Smalley and sophomore Bevin
Hall are in a battle at the QB position.
Both may share the signal calling, and
when not quarterbacking, Derek will be a re-
ceiver and Bevin will be in the slot, said Al-
timus.
Antwerp runs the flex bone offense and
will feature Barnhouse at fullback and Tyler
Messman at either the fullback spot or at tight
end.
Barnhouse has added muscle and bulk in
the off season and should have a good year.
The slots will be manned by a couple of
experienced players in sophomore Justice
Clark and Bryce Hall. The receiving tandem
will be a couple of basketball players with 6-
foot-3 sophomore Trenton Copsey and
Colton Stout. All these guys are so much
further along. They are bigger, stronger, and
more mature, Altimus said.

At the defensive end position Sanchez,
Hall and Sukup look to play while Bute,
Laker and Carlisle will work at defensive
tackle.
The kids are working hard and the attitude
has been great. We are gaining confidence at
practice which hopefully will translate with
good experiences on Friday night. Im ex-
cited about the year, concluded Altimus.
Holding down the center position will be
Jarett Bute. The 278-pound junior is rock
solid and according to Altimus is one of the
strongest kids he has ever coached.
At the guard spot Altimus is looking to
sophomore Carlos Sanchez and junior Jor-
dan Laker, a two-time letter winner.
Sanchez is another one of those guys who
has worked in the off season and has devel-
oped a lot of muscle.
The tackle spot has been a battle with sen-
ior Colton Hall holding down one spot while
Jacob Sukup, Erik Miesle and Cainan
Carlisle battle for the other.
Defensively, the Archers will run a 4-2-5
with Smalley returning at safety along with
Hall and Copsey returning at cornerback.
Right now the outside linebacker belongs to
Clark, who also held the spot last year. Dal-
ton Gremling and Colton Stout are pressing
each other for the other opening.
Returning at defensive linebacker will be
Messman and Barnhouse.
Its nice having these experienced guys
back. They are reacting more instead of wait-
ing for something to happen and they are
much more aggressive, said Altimus.

Antwerp boys XCountry looks strong; girls total 4

ANTWERP Sophomore Sam
Williamson, who had a banner season as a
freshman, returns to lead the Antwerp boys
cross country team.
Williamson ran in the Division III district
meet at Liberty Center last year where he
was clocked at 16:25.07, allowing him to
qualify for the regional meet at Boardman
High School near Youngstown. There,
Williamson garnered a 27th place finish with
a time of 17:16.93.
Graduated from the 2012 team were Ryan
Hatlevig, Colin Krick and Isaac Reinhart.
Joining Williamson will be Matt Reinhart,
Aaron ODonnell, Justis Harvey and Jerett
Godeke, all of whom were members of the
team last year.
New to the varsity cross country squad are
Eric Buchan, Matthew Dooley, Josh
Ehlinger, Evan Hilton and Jonathon Hudson.
Along with Williamson, I am expecting
good things from Matt (Reinhart) and Eric
(Buchan), said head coach Cord Ehrhart.
Some of them had success on the track
team and hopefully it will carry over. We are
a young team but I believe we will be com-
petitive and better than average.
Last year, the Archers finished in the mid-
dle of the Green Meadows Conference race.
Fairview took top honors with 52 followed
by second place Ayersville (76), Hicksville
(94) and Antwerp (103).
We have some strong runners and good
athletes and I would like to think we would
be in the hunt for a GMC and district title,
said Ehrhart.
In the district meet, the Archers finished
sixth with Williamson, Colin Krick, Isaac
Reinhart, Chase Gerken and Matt Reinhart
being Antwerps top five finishers.
On the girls side, Ehrhart has but four
runners on his varsity team; however, all
four were participants last year. All juniors
this time around, the team includes Rachel
Becker, Kayla Burns, Maggie Reinhart and
Bailee Sigman.
Both Kayla (Burns) and Bailee (Sigman)
qualified for the regional two years ago as
freshmen, said Ehrhart. Unfortunately, Sig-
man battled injuries last year and was unable
to run most of the season.

When trying to assess the upcoming sea-
son, Coach Ehrhart has no idea what to ex-
pect.
They have been working hard and if
Bailee can stay healthy she should have a
good season.
In cross country, team scores are deter-
mined by the top five finishers and with the
Lady Archers having just four team mem-
bers, they are not a team as much as just four
individuals.
Not knowing exactly why so few girls are
wanting to run cross country Coach Ehrhart
said, With volleyball being made available
for the freshmen and the fact it is growing in
popularity, maybe girls want to be in volley-
ball more than cross country.

ANTWERP The Antwerp girls golf
team will begin the season with seven
golfers which is a pleasant surprise for head
coach Phil Rangel. During the first couple of
weeks of practice, the coach was concerned
with his low numbers having just four
golfers. With few players he realized his op-
tions would be limited.
Things have recently changed a bit and
we have a seven-player roster. This will en-
able us to compete within ourselves and
have the best golfers make up our team score
during matches.
Those complimenting the 2013 edition of
Antwerp girls golf include the sister duo of
Jenna and Maggie Wilson, senior Savanna
Fettig, along with Sierra Cline and Emilee
Phillips. A couple of freshmen beginners will
also be looking to push the more experi-
enced players.
We have Ashley Bowers and Mackenzie
Hart, who are excited about playing and
learning the game, commented Coach
Rangel.
Entering his sixth year as head mentor for
the Lady Archers, Rangel is approaching the
season as another stepping stone in building
the program.
We are not going to be the most compet-
itive team on the course, but the girls enjoy
playing golf and we continue to work on the
basics, including our putting, chipping and
driving.
Playing on the team as a freshman, Jenna
Wilson is the most experienced player re-
turning. She has shown significant im-

provement. In one of our early season
matches a week or so ago, she shot a 129,
which is her best showing compared to all of
last year, Rangel commented.
Younger sister Maggie, a freshman, was a
member of the eighth grade team and ac-
cording to Coach Rangel is a hard worker.
She really works at her game and is very
coachable.
Another freshman, Emilee Phillips, also is
moving up from playing eighth grade golf
and Coach Rangel is anxious to see her de-
velopment as a golfer. Emilee has natural
talent on the course and if she puts in the
time she should be an excellent golfer.
Sierra Cline is a beginner and is excited
about learning the game. This is her first

Promising season for Archer volleyball

ANTWERP Finishing 14-10 last year,
head coach Amy Hammer is expecting her
Antwerp Lady Archers to do much better in
2013. The veteran coach has a good mix of
several returning players with added expe-
rience as well as some new players who will
press the issue for playing time.
Seven seniors graduated, but Hammer re-
turns three letter winners including senior
Maddie Reinhart, senior Kaiya Jemison, and
junior middle hitter Emily Hamman.
This is a great trio of players returning
and I am expecting a lot out them. Hamman
did a good job throughout the summer to
prepare for the upcoming season. Its her
third year starting for us and she can be a
difference maker, said Hammer.
The Lady Archers are a young team and
as Coach Hammer puts it, they are over-
loaded with sophomores.
The current roster includes six sopho-
mores: Audrie Longardner, Annie Miesle,
Avery Braaten, Emily Derck, Kiana Recker
and Blaire Rebber.
Skill-wise we are such a young team. We
are working hard on our passing and serving
as well as stressing defense. As a young
team it is also so important for us to develop
good team chemistry, Coach Hammer said.
Joining Hamman from the junior class are
Gabby Zuber, Olivia Tempel and Mari Flint.
Representing the freshman class is setter
Peyton Short.
Volleyball is such a team sport. We have
several kids with equal capabilities and right
now we are trying to find the best combina-

tion in order to have the best possible team.
With an overall career record of 63-36,
Hammer enters her fifth year as head coach.
Like any year it is her goal to win the Green
Meadows Conference title.
Last years group worked well together
as a team. They were a good example for the
younger kids. Now if we can carry that over
to this season and develop positive team
chemistry we should win our share of
matches even though we are young.
Graduated from the 2012 squad were
Kacy Brumett, Katie Bissell, Alexis Jones,
and Lydia Yenser. In tournament play, the
Lady Archers defeated North Central 27-15,
25-10, 25-10 before dropping their next
match at the hands of Ayersville 26-24, 16-
25, 25-15, 25-17 to end their season.
Joining Hammer on her coaching staff are
assistant coach Kara Eicher and freshman
coach Heather Barnhouse.

time playing but she is anxious to learn.
In earlier competition this season, Maggie
Wilson shot a 134 while Phillips fired a 123.
We are certainly in the building stage, but
I think its not unrealistic to see these girls
drop their scores 15 points or so. A goal we
are aiming for is to see them shooting 100-
110.
Fettig, a member of last years team, is a
late starter this year along with the two fresh-
men in Bowers and Hart.
In building a solid program, Coach Rangel
knows he needs to develop a golf culture
much like the volleyball program is experi-
encing.
The volleyball program is growing and
getting better and we need to attempt the
same thing and try to development an interest
in golf at a younger age. Hopefully we will
see a turn around and a stronger golf program
in the next few years, Rangel concluded.
The Antwerp boys golf team graduated Ed
Reinhart, Bobby Wales and Green Meadows
Conference Second Team selection Jesse
Wilson, but head coach Jon Short will have
two returning letter winners who were also
GMC Honorable Mention for the 2012 sea-
son.
Joining Eric Miesle and Jeff Coleman will
be 10 additional team members to help com-
pliment the 2013 boys golf program.
Receiving high accolades as the season
opens are returning seniors Miesle and Kyle
Recker along with sophomore Coleman.
Other team members include three seniors
who have not played before, Brock Taylor
and Justin Langham as well as CJ Jones, who
did participate as a freshman but sat out his
sophomore and junior years.
Also returning from last years team are
Jasper Godeke, Iann Roebel and Drake
Neace, and three sophomores playing for the
first time including Parker Swenson, Colton
Bennett and Austin Vanatta.
We are an inexperienced team, but the
guys are willing to put the time in and work
hard. I believe we will see much improve-

ment as the season progresses, Coach Short
said.
Veteran coach of 16 years, Short has a 12-
man squad who he believes will push one an-
other to reach their potential.
We look for Miesle, Recker and Coleman
to carry us with Jones and Taylor to compete
for one of the top four spots. Coleman has
really improved his game, commented
Short.
In their first match of the season on Aug.
12, Edgerton defeated Antwerp, 202-206.
Coleman shot a respectable 42 followed by
a 47 from Recker and 57 from Taylor.
Godeke was next in line with a 60.
It was our first match of the season and
we were without Miesle and Jones. Miesle is
splitting time playing golf and football. He
will be on the football field on Friday nights
and will miss some golf practices, but he
should be on the course for all the scheduled
golf matches, according to Coach Short.
The difficult thing about high school golf
is the season is so short. We only have two
months and so we work mainly on our short
game, including chipping and putting.
Last year, the Archers finished in a tie for
third place with Ayersville shooting a 367.
Wayne Trace won the title with a 335 fol-
lowed by second place Tinora at 347. Coach
Short sees it much the same this year with
the Raiders and Tinora at the top of the
GMC.

New Panther mentor counting on commitment

PAULDING First-year head Paulding foot-
ball coach Kyle Coleman is counting on the hard
work and commitment of his senior class to bring
a lift to the Panther football program this year.
In 2012, the Panthers ended the season at 0-
10 in all games and 0-8 in the Northwest Con-
ference.
Fourteen seniors have come out for this years
program, a strong number, especially in light of
last years disappointments, said Coleman.
All 14 received one captain vote, said Cole-
man. People are looking to them as leaders.
Returning quarterback Julian Salinas will be
expected to bring experience to his assessment
and skills of the game on the field. Considered
to be a physical player (6-1, 200 pounds), Cole-
man is looking to Salinas to be available to both
throw the ball and break loose for the run.
Our seniors are going to have to lead both
sides of the line, Coleman said. They are work-
ing hard; they plan to lead the guys by more than
example.
Both Salinas and lineman Ryan Schindler are
team captains. Coleman said that Schindler is ca-
pable of leading both offensive and defensive
lines.
He is a very tough player, noted Coleman.
Another senior, Javier Gonzales, could be a
three-dimensional player, serving as a wide re-
ceiver on offense, defensive back and kicking in
some talent into the special teams as well.
These guys are talented athletes. Many of
them have played two and three sports; they are
good athletes, said Coleman.
Other senior leaders included Michael Mott,
who will return to the offensive and defensive
line, Chazz Hahn, who will play fullback and
linebacker and Taylor Deatrick, a wide receiver
and defensive back.
This is a strong, bonded class with a lot of
chemistry, observed Coleman. Theyve been
through a lot, but they continue to work hard.
Theyre working hard and they want to win
games.
Coleman was raised in East Columbus where
he played high school football. He moved on to
Bluffton University where he was a four-year-
player on the Bluffton football team.
He graduated from college with an undergrad-
uate degree in health and physical education and
a graduate degree in special education. This year
is his first year at Paulding where he is a high
school special education teacher.
The underclassmen have a lot of talent to de-
velop, Coleman said. They are looking for-
ward to getting that Friday night experience.
We had a tremendous summer. They put a lot
of work into the game; we had a very difficult
camp. Now they are excited to get started, con-
tinued Coleman. Coming in with this senior
class is very helpful. Theyve had good coach-
ing; they show that theyve had a lot of good val-
ues and hard work instilled in them.
In addition to the game on the field, Coleman
hopes to instill such life values as staying steady
through the ups and downs.
Football has its ups and down, but we have
to maintain our composure, said Coleman.
Things will be good and bad but you cant get
down on things.
Coleman said that he hopes to bring a lot of
intensity and passion to the game, traits that he
hopes that his players will pick up on.

First-year coach Krick optimistic about Paulding CC

PAULDING Paulding first-year cross
country coach, Hayden Krick, a veteran of
county running success, is optimistic about
the talent he sees on both sides of the ledger
as the Panther harriers head into this falls
cross country season.
For the boys, Krick sees a good mixture
of talented senior leadership and upcoming
young talent while the girls team will build
on a strong nucleus around upper class ex-
perience.
Im expecting great things from our three
senior boys, said Krick. Travis Jones holds
the school record in cross country; both
Travis and Andrew Layman bring a lot of ex-
perience to the course.
Another senior, Cody Jarrell, is out for
cross country for the first time, but has
proven his athleticism in track and wrestling,
says Krick.
These three seniors know how to com-
pete and win. They bring a lot of athletic ex-
perience to the table, Krick said. Im
looking for them to have a great future this
fall.
A fourth senior, Cameron Mohley, is look-
ing to improve his efforts this fall and will
be waiting in the wings to contribute in com-
petition as well as push the other runners in
practice.
Three underclassmen round out the boys
squad.
Lucas Arend, who is running cross coun-
try for the first time, is coming off of a very
good track season; he is very talented, said
Krick of his sophomore runner. Were
going to be looking for good things from the
underclassmen. Theyre going to be closing
the gap on the upperclassmen as the season
progresses.
Two freshmen, Simeon Sheperd and Day-
ton Pracht, both ran solid five-minute miles
in junior high cross country.
Both put in good summers. I expect them
to transition very well to 5K running, Krick
said.
I really learned a lot from my high school
(Antwerp) and college (Defiance) coaches,
said Krick. I plan to alternate practices and
give them a few easy days so they have the
energy for the Saturday meets. Hopefully we
are going to build into the best year that
Paulding has had in awhile.
In girls cross country, seniors Sidney Sali-
nas, Ashley Johanns and Taylor Farr all bring
intensity and a strong sense of competitive-
ness to the meets.
All three are natural leaders, commented
Krick. Sidney wrestled and did track and
Taylor ran track.
Perhaps the top runner on the team will be
Shayla Sheperd, a junior. Other juniors in-
clude Melissa Martinez, who is competing in

cross country for the first time and an ex-
traordinary runner in foreign exchange stu-
dent, Karolina Jakuczun.
She is from Poland; she has never com-
peted in cross country but shes a good run-
ner and loves to run, said Krick.
One sophomore, Allison Harpel, rounds
out the squad with a lot of determination and
a cooperative team spirit.
Krick did running sports at Antwerp and
was a four year letterman in indoor and out-
door track at Defiance College. Krick is cur-
rently working on education for a physical
therapy career.

PHS volleyball players stepping into new roles

PAULDING The transfer of Paulding
volleyball player Kelsey Beck to Fairview
this season has set off a domino effect of
shifting roles for Panther head coach Todd
Harmon.
Fortunately, players such as setter Kaley
Varner and outside hitter/setter Sierra Mc-
Cullough have the diversity to step up and
get the job done.
Three returning seniors in Varner, McCul-
lough and Stephanie Baldwin are expected
to be a strong core of leadership for this sea-
sons effort.
Currently, Harmon is working on tech-
nique, especially jump serving, which he be-
lieves will be a strong asset to this years
attack.
The mentor is excited about his game on
both sides of the spectrum, with the athleti-
cism of freshman Faith Vogel figuring to be
a quick energizer to the teams offense.
She (Vogel, 6-foot) has the ability to get
the ball up well, said Harmon. She has a
huge learning curve; she can do running
swings and jump serve or attack from the
center. For a freshman, she has a huge learn-

ing curve.
In the junior class, Harmon is looking to
Katie Carnahan and Brooke Combs (middle
and outside hitter) to quickly add to the suc-
cess of the squad. In addition, sophomore
Jaycie Varner looks to take leadership in set-
ting as well as an outside hitter. Morgan
Riley will serve as the teams libero, as well
as a setter.
You need experienced players when you
have to adjust things the way we do, noted
Harmon. Thankfully weve got several ath-
letes where we can do that.
Kaley Varner has really stepped it up,
Harmon said. She is going to be a very
strong offensive threat. She is one of those
setters that can run programs on digs and
tips. Theyre kind of like a quarterback in
football. Kaley has that kind of leadership
ability.
Weve still got some work to do on tech-
nique, but one thing weve done right is
work on our jump setting, Harmon contin-
ued. The girls are really picking that up.
That can turn a game around in a hurry. It
can make all of the difference in the world.
You can score a lot of points off of jump
serves.
Jaycie Varner, Kristen Schilt and Claudia
Foltz are also expected to make significant
contributions to this years team.

Gaining experience is
key for Panther golf

PAULDING Paulding golfers are looking to
gain strength through experience as they hit the
links this season. Under the leadership of head
coach Mike Miller, the girls squad has seven par-
ticipants to help fortify its performance this season,
with several solid athletes.
Both boys and girls squads now have enough
players to fill out their rosters for full participation.
Members of the girls team include Jerika
Bland, Alyssa Shelmadine, Rachael Mourey,
Sydney Provines, Rachel Nicelley, Ellie Miller
and Estee Miller.
Miller is very optimistic about his teams
chances for the season. The Panther depth starts
with Bland, who recently participated in a
weekly (every Monday) golf series in Fort
Wayne this past summer where she was given
overall golfer recognition.
Alyssa (Shelmadine), last years most im-
proved, is our number two golfer who keeps get-
ting better every week, said Miller. Ellie Miller,
our current number four golfer, also has great po-
tential. Several times she has had the second best
score on the team (behind Jerika) for a few tour-
naments already, so she has excelled also.
Other players are developing well, including
Rachael Mourey, who has really worked at her
game and is well on her way to shooting her best
scores ever, Sydney Provines and Rachel Nicel-
ley, who have all decreased their scores from last
year by four or five strokes. In addition, Estee
Miller is a beginner, but very patient and willing
to learn and work at her game to help the team.
We definitely want to better our 6-4 overall
record from last year, which was our first year,
commented Miller. If we all come together at
the same time, we can compete with almost any
team we play.
The key to Paulding boys golf this year is
gaining experience on the course, according to
head coach Steve Heilshorn. The Panthers started
practice with just four golfers, but two others
have joined which will help give the local squad
a boost in tabulating points to their favor.
Weve not been off to a good start; were try-
ing to get experience, said veteran coach Heil-
shorn. We started playing matches with four
guys but now we have six. That should make us
more solid.
The one senior on the squad is Justin Adams,
who earned a varsity letter last season. Heilshorn
likes the way his senior leader has improved over
the summer, especially his swing.
Three juniors will become the solid nucleus of
the team, Ben Heilshorn, the squads leading
golfer, Brad Crawford and Corey Adkins.
We will be looking for Bens leadership, es-
pecially in putting, said Heilshorn. Hes been
working hard and has the capability to shoot in
the low 40s for nine holes.
Junior Brad Crawford has been shooting in the
mid-40s so far, but fired a 44 recently in practice,
said Heilshorn. He hopes to see Crawford shoot
consistently at 45 and below.
Both Brad and Ben are two-year varsity let-
termen, said Heilshorn. They have a lot of ex-
perience. Our third junior, Corey Adkins has just
started. Were not sure what to expect from him
yet but he has a nice swing.
Two other young players are inexperienced on
competition but both have played golf on their
own. Sophomore Damon Egnor and freshman
Kaleb Becker are first-year players that Heil-
shorn hopes will not only develop for this season,
but for the future of the program.
In the Northwest Conference, Heilshorn sees
Allen East, Lincolnview and Spencerville as
strong contenders for a league title.
I hope that we continue to improve to the
point where we can make our way to the middle
of the pack, said Heilshorn.

Soccer comes to Pauldings fall schedule

For the first time, soccer is being sanc-
tioned as an official sport at Paulding
High School. According to head boys
coach Rob Goshia, sanction for the game
was approved by the Paulding Exempted
Village School Board last fall.
Since then, both a boys and girls jun-
ior varsity program has been established,
said Goshia. A varsity program is antic-
ipated to be ready in 2015. Our boys pro-
gram currently has 18 active players
consisting of three seniors, one junior,
two sophomores and 12 freshmen. These
boys have been on a fast track in gaining
experience as a team and working very
hard to become the best team that they
can be.
Both boys and girls teams are practic-
ing and posting home games at the Em-
manuel Baptist Church on Emerald Road.
It is anticipated that next years home
games be at Keysor Field.
Assistant boys coach Mike Maasel
and I have been working with the kids in
Paulding in some sort of soccer program
for the past five years, said Goshia. We
both started as substitute coaches for the
Kiwanis Program in 2008. We have a
great deal of appreciation to give to the
Kiwanis Program for getting soccer going
in Paulding. Without the initial steps that
were taken by them, the high school pro-
gram of today would simply not exist.
After seeing the talent develop in Ki-
wanis, the local soccer team joined the
Soccer Association of Youth Soccer Pro-
gram in Putnam County West District.
Youths ages 9-14, were able to com-
pete against such teams as Continental,
Lincolnview, Van Wert, Kalida, Miller
City, Ottawa, Ottoville and Ft. Jennings.
While Goshia is heading up the boys
team, Sam Rue has organized and is
working with the girls junior varsity
team. There is equal enthusiasm on the
girls side of the ledger.
Those athletes participating in the
girls program include Morrisa Rue,
Molly Meeker, Victoria Bradford, Victo-
ria Meadows, Kaitlynn Fisher, Meagan
Reineck, Paige Fitzwater, Kathryn Clap-
saddle, Christine Clapsaddle, Brooke
Weidenhamer, Ceirra Pack, Kacie Karl-
stasdt, Suzy Manz, Destiny Reed,
Sammi Lucas and Sanora Keck.

HAVILAND A year ago, only a loss to
Van Wert county rival Crestview kept Wayne
Trace from posting an undefeated football
season and claiming the schools second
playoff berth.
Wayne Trace was 9-1 overall and a perfect
7-0 in the Green Meadows Conference in
2012 but the Raiders learned a valuable les-
son in the hunt for the postseason.
We had an outstanding season last year
and with the number of kids we have back,
we look to build on that this year, com-
mented Raider head coach Bill Speller. We
had one slip-up and it cost us a shot in the
playoffs. It was a hard lesson to learn but the
guys have come back this year determined
and ready for the season.
The red, white and blue roster features 50
players and includes 11 seniors, six of which
are fourth-year letter winners.
A lot of guys bring a lot of experience to
the field this year, continued the Raider
mentor. Weve got several guys who are en-
tering their fourth year at the varsity level
and they have been very focused.
One area that might be improved for the
red, white and blue could be on the defensive
side of the ball, where every starter returns
for the 2013 season.
Defensively, everybody is back, Speller
stated. With all 11 guys returning, we have
high expectations as a coaching staff in what
they are capable of.
Leading the list of returnees is junior line-
backer Tyler Showalter (5-11, 160), who
paced the Raiders in tackles a year ago with
125 along with eight tackles for a loss and 4-
1/2 sacks.
Seniors Brock Worden (6-1, 190) and
Devin Wenzlick (6-3, 210) will be the defen-
sive ends for Wayne Trace after posting 70
and 55 tackles a year ago. Worden also added
nine tackles for a loss and eight sacks.
Senior T.J. Blackmore (6-5, 215) along
with juniors Daron Showalter (6-1, 210),
Chuckie Chastain (6-3, 300) and Riley
Moore (6-4, 260) will also see action on the
defensive line. Chastain recorded 48 stops
and 8-1/2 tackles for a loss a year ago with
Moore recording 37 tackles.
Along with Tyler Showalter at linebacker,
senior Jared Sherry (5-9, 185) and senior
Colby Speice (6-3, 200) could also see action
with Sherry and Speice also splitting time at
strong safety. Speice was second on the team
with 73 tackles last year and Sherry chipped
in 57 tackles.
The free safety is going to be senior Jake
Gerber (5-5, 145), who posted 41 stops a sea-
son ago.

Senior-dominated Raiders ready for season

HAVILAND Wayne Trace volleyball
head coach Angie Speice returns for her sec-
ond season at the helm of the Lady Raiders
with a roster that features nine seniors and
loads of experience.
The Lady Raiders bring back eight letter
winners from a squad that finished 10-12
overall and 3-4 in the Green Meadows Con-
ference but will look for significant improve-
ment this year.
We have a solid group of seniors that
bring back a lot of experience, noted Spe-
ice. One of the things we are working on is
to find out where the girls gel the best to-
gether and what positions fit the best for
each girl.
Seniors on the Raider roster include setter
Libby Stabler, defensive specialist Maddie
Baumle, setter Maddie McClure, outside hit-
ter/defensive specialist Brenda Feasby, out-
side hitter Emily Mohr, outside hitter Abbie
Shepherd, outside hitter Lauren Speice, mid-
dle hitter Sylvia Young and defensive spe-
cialist Amber Combs.
Our hitters should be strong at the net,
Speice continued. With our experience, we
feel like we should do a good job of hitting
and blocking.
Junior middle hitter Sarah Young, outside
hitter/defensive specialist Addison Baumle
and defensive specialist Gina Sinn also will
see action at the varsity level.
Another area we believe will be a strong
point will be our serving, added the Raider
mentor.
One area we need to improve on is our
quickness, commented Speice. We have to

get better at serve reception as well. Those
two areas are probably the two biggest
things we need to improve in the most.
Despite that, Speice feels like the girls
have the capability to be very competitive.
All of the girls have been very positive
and they are very a good group to be
around, Speice noted. With this group, we
expect them all to contribute in their own
way. The girls are learning their roles and we
need to play within those roles.
We just want to improve each week and
get better as the season goes, stated the
Raider head coach.
In the league, Speice picks Ayersville as
the favorite but also thinks the race could be
very competitive.
Ayersville Is probably the favorite but I
feel like we can be very competitive as
well, concluded Speice.

Raiders look to rebuild; 2 girls to represent WT

HAVILAND After winning the Green
Meadows Conference tournament a year
ago, Wayne Traces boys golf team enters the
2013 season a very young and inexperienced
squad.
The Raiders bring back only one letter
winner from last season in junior Corbin
Linder, a first team all-league selection last
season.
However, the rest of the roster features
nine other players looking for their initial
varsity playing experience.
Corbin is a solid number one for us,
commented fifth year head coach Chris
Rosswurm. He will have to lead us as we
are going to be very young and experienced
behind him.
The roster includes three sophomores and
six freshmen that, according to the Raider
mentor, all have the ability to battle for time
at the varsity level.
We have several players who could see
varsity playing time this year, added the
Raider head coach. All of the guys have po-
tential and we could have different players
playing in different matches. Its going to
come down to who works the hardest and
who shows the most improvement.
Sophomores on the team include Christo-
pher Davis, Luke Miller and Alec Vest.
Freshmen looking to garner some varsity in-
clude are Evan Baughman, Ethan Crates,
Ethan Dunham, Ethan Linder, Quinten
Miller and Brady Stabler.
Golf is such a mental game that you just
dont know how kids are going to react until
they are in those situations, Rosswurm
commented. With as young as we are, they
have to learn to play through things and how
they need to handle themselves emotionally
and mentally.
Rosswurm is hopeful that the Raiders con-
tinue to learn and improve and hopefully
challenge for the league crown in Septem-
ber.
With the way our league is set up, if you
are able to put it together on that one day,
you can come out of the tournament with a
league championship and that is our goal,
continued the red, white and blues head
coach. I think these guys will get better as
the season progresses and will learn the
game and how to deal with adversity as the
year goes along. There a lot of different as-
pects to the game and the way you handle
each is key to your ability to improve. Stay-
ing positive and hungry to learn will be a key
for this team.
For the first time since the program was
started in 1998, the Wayne Trace girls golf
team wont field a full squad as only two
ladies will represent the red, white and blue.
Fourth year letter winner Emilie Linder
and third year letter winner Paige Rahrig
will compete as individuals in 2013.
Both girls feature a lot of experience,
which is a benefit according to head coach
Al Welch.
The good thing is both girls have played
a lot of golf and know what they have to do
to prepare themselves, commented Welch.
They both have areas to improve and it is
something we need to work on. They each
get off of the tee pretty good but their short
games continue to be an area that improve-
ment is key.
The Lady Raiders will participate in the
Green Meadows Conference tournament as
individuals and will take part in the sectional
at Foxs Den Golf Course near Celina.

Raiders looking forward to XCountry season

HAVILAND Wayne Trace cross country
coach Annette Sinn enters the 2013 cam-
paign excited about the upcoming season as
the Raider boys and girls look for improve-
ment in the coming year.
The Raider boys feature nine runners on
the squad, with three seniors and six fresh-
men dotting the roster.
Despite such a split in the squad, Sinn
feels the Raider seniors are doing a great job
in bridging the gap and leading the squad.
Seniors Logan Fast, Arlen Stoller and
Brandon Zartman return for their final year
at Wayne Trace.
Sinn also knows that there are going to be
growing pains for the six Raider freshmen.
They are going to have to learn all over
again and adjust from a junior high race to a
varsity race, commented the Raider head
coach. Learning how to pace yourself in a
varsity race is going to be completely differ-
ent at this level.
Freshman Chance Elliott, Chandler
Thompson, Tanner Cook, Ruger Goeltzen-
leuchter, Sam Nickols and Joe Schmidt all
will face new challenges.
Just learning the race and adjusting to the
speed when you are running against seniors
that are very good will be an adjustment for
them, Sinn continued. The seniors are
doing a great job of trying to work with the
freshmen and prepare them for the upcoming
season.
Overall, they have shown a tremendous
amount of improvement, concluded Sinn of
the boys squad.
On the girls side, senior Madi Poling is
the lone Lady Raider in her final season in a
Wayne Trace uniform.
Juniors Becca Hamrick and Erin Jewell
also return for the red, white and blue as do
sophomores Hollie Wannemacher and
Shayna Temple.
However, the concern is the lack of num-
bers.
Obviously, with only five girls, we cant
afford an injury or sickness or we cant com-
pete as a team, Sinn noted. So that is al-
ways a concern.
But, the girls do have experience as all of
them are back from last season, Sinn con-
tinued. The biggest thing for the girls is
they have to learn to pace themselves.
Being the only senior, Madi is doing a
good job of working with the other girls and
providing leadership, added Sinn.
Sinn feels the Green Meadows Conference
races are up in the air on both the boys and
girls side, with several teams being hopeful
of challenging for the league crown.

Wayne Trace looks to improve after allow-
ing 19.2 points per game last season, giving
up 221 yards a contest. The Raiders arent
looking to change much, allowing the re-
turnees to be very confident in the schemes
while keeping things simple according to the
Raider mentor.
We arent really adding or changing
much, Speller commented. We want to
keep things simple for the guys and just let
them be comfortable in what they need to
do.
While the defense is expected to show sig-
nificant improvement, the Raider offense
cant get much better than what it was in
2012.
Wayne Trace scored 50.4 points per game
and totaled 4,615 yards of offense on the
season, throwing for 3,260 yards and 49
touchdowns on the year.
The signal caller responsible for the ma-
jority of that offense returns in Speice. The
senior quarterback was 184 of 311 through
the air, throwing for 3,156 yards and 48
scores.
The spread offense has allowed us to
force teams to adjust to what we want to do
more, continued the Raider mentor.
Despite the loss of his top receiver to grad-
uation, Speice still has plenty of options.
Wayne Trace brings back senior Korbin
Showalter (6-1, 185) at split end with junior
Jake Arend (6-3, 180) and sophomore Cole
Shepherd (6-0, 160) also expected to see ac-
tion.
Showalter totaled 22 catches for a team
high 816 yards and 14 touchdowns a year
ago with Arend recording 30 receptions, 560
yards and ten scores.
We have been pretty pleased with what
we have seen in the scrimmage, continued
Speller. I think one thing we have seen is
the receivers are more comfortable this year
in what they need to do, what Colby is going
to do and with the line.
Up front, junior Justin Pierce (5-10, 220)
and sophomore Justin Speice (6-5, 260) will
both see action at left guard while Black-
more will handle the right guard duties.
Senior Aaron Stoller (6-2,225) comes
back at center with Wenzlick and Worden
handling the duties at the tackles.
Tyler Showalter and Jake Dingus will both
see action at one slot and Gerber is expected
to play the other slot. Gerber posted 27 re-
ceptions and 375 yards a season ago.
Sherry returns at running back after total-
ing 466 yards on 74 carries last season.
There are two big areas that I think are
keys for this team, added Speller. First, we
have to stay away from injuries. That can
change the whole complex of a team. Sec-

ond, we have to stay confident in each other
and work with each other. This group has a
lot of potential but they have to play within
themselves. If we do that, we feel like we
have a great opportunity to have success.
Wayne Traces schedule also has been up-
graded in 2013.
After opening with a road trip to county
rival Paulding, the red, white and blue wel-
comes Otsego back to the schedule as the
Knights visit Raider Field in week two.
Otsego was 6-4 in 2012 against a schedule
that featured eight opponents in Division I,
II, III or IV.
The third week then features the matchup
with rival Crestview, also at Raider Field.
Wayne Trace then opens league play with a
road trip to Ayersville.
Weve upgraded the schedule this year
with a quality opponent in Otsego, noted
Speller. One thing we learned from last year
is how important the non-league games are
and it will be a good challenge for us.
As far as the league race goes, Speller
states Tinora and Ayersville each present a
tough challenge but also thinks the confer-
ence will be much improved.
Numbers as a whole are up around the
league and that will just raise the level of
play for all of us, concluded the Wayne
Trace head coach. I think the league race
will be very challenging and we have to be
ready to play every night.
