UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS ENGINEERING

PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS ENGINEERING

Since its creation in 1929, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (PNG E) program at Penn State has established a strong foundation in basic sciences, engineering, and geological sciences. Graduates are prepared to enter the private and public sectors as petroleum and natural gas engineers, or to continue their education at the graduate level. Our graduates are recruited by all of the major oil companies and our alumni are found worldwide throughout the industryso youll be in good company.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates from Penn States Earth and Mineral Sciences Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering program have a 100 percent job placement rate.
PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Program Educational Objectives are: Our graduates will integrate key science and engineering principles to address the technological challenges of the petroleum and natural gas industry. Our graduates will practice in a broad range of petroleum engineering fields working on teams that create innovative solutions to the most pressing problems of the petroleum and natural gas industry by implementing the ideals of ethical behavior, professionalism, and environmental sensitivity and social awareness. Our graduates will be recognized as critical and independent thinkers and will assume positions of leadership in defining the social, intellectual, business and technical dimensions of the professional organizations they belong to. Our graduates will continue their lifelong learning process and participate in graduate education to remain as effective professionals in the workplace of the future. The program provides an excellent basis for advanced study. Small, intimate classes with good communication among students, graduate students, and professors are hallmarks of the program. The program also offers excellent laboratory facilities, including a drilling rig simulator that provides realistic hands-on experience. There is a strong emphasis on computer methods, with access to modern computer facilities. There are numerous opportunities for you to become involved in research projects.

Petroleum and natural gas engineers have the opportunity to work in a variety of locations around the world. Heres a small sample of employment opportunities: Drilling engineers who design and supervise the drilling of oil and natural gas wells Production engineers who design facilities that produce, transmit, and store oil and natural gas Reservoir engineers who evaluate and forecast oil and gas field performance, design extraction processes, and conduct economic evaluations Marketing engineers who handle sales marketing and transportation of oil and natural gas products Research scientists and engineers who find new ways of improving production, reservoir recovery processes, performance, and treatment processes Educators who train the next generation of petroleum engineers
SALARIES

The programs structure emphasizes the application of the fundamentals of mathematics and earth and engineering sciences by incorporating them with real-world petroleum and natural gas engineering solutions. The courses serve as a melting pot for theory, application to case studies, and engineering project design. This enables students to understand that a successful engineering design project requires a sound theoretical foundation, experimentation, and engineering judgment. Design projects are required throughout the curriculum. Completing these projects require a combination of problem formulation strategies, testing of alternative design methodologies, feasibility studies, and economic and environmental considerations. Graduates of the program are expected to perform in various facets of the petroleum industry including drilling, production, evaluation, transportation, and storage. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering faculty and staff are committed to an interactive teaching and learning environment to ensure that you are an active participant in the learning process. General education opportunities are diverse enough to enable you to choose courses that engage your particular interests and backgrounds.

As a petroleum and natural gas engineer, you can expect to earn the highest starting salaries in the engineering field. Starting salaries are around $90,000, and median annual earnings for petroleum engineers are now well above $140,000.
