Lugano, the largest town in the holiday region of Ticino, is not only Switzerland's third most important financial centre and a conference, banking and business centre, but also a town of parks and flowers, villas and sacred buildings. With Mediterranean flair, Lugano offers all the advantages of a world-class city, combined with the cachet of a small town.

Lugano lies in a bay on the northern side of Lake Lugano, surrounded by numerous mountains offering splendid viewpoints. The traffic-free historic town centre, the numerous buildings in Italianate Lombardy style, the exclusive museums, the mountains, lake and a packed calendar of events all invite visitors to see the sights, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy "dolce far niente". Thanks to its mild climate, Lugano is a popular tourist destination in the spring when the camellias are in bloom. The town centre with its Mediterranean-style squares and arcades, and numerous parks with subtropical plants such as the Parco Civico on the shores of the lake invite you to laze around, enjoying

the atmosphere. By the lakeside promenade are the Belvedere Gardens, where the parkland boasts not only camellias and magnolias but also countless sub-tropical plants and modern works of art. Art connoisseurs are attracted to this city of art and architecture by the high standard of the exhibitions it hosts. In the Museo Cantonale d'Arte are paintings by Klee, Jawlensky, Renoir and Degas, among others. In the last 50 years, the Ticino region, and Lugano in particular, have developed into an important region for architecture. The most well-known representatives of the "Ticino School" are Luigi Snozzi and Mario Botta. Botta's Banca BSI (Viale Franscini), the Palazzo Ransila (Via Pretorio) and his own workshop on the Via Ciani are good examples. The two closest mountains to Lugano, Monte San Salvatore and Monte Br, give you an outstanding panorama of the town, Lake Lugano and the alpine scenery. From Monte Br there is a walk down to the village of Br, which has preserved its typical Ticino village centre, and enhanced it with works of art. From the San Salvatore another popular walk leads down through the beautifully situated Carona to Lake Lugano at Morcote. Taking a boat trip back to Lugano is a splendid way to round off the day. Other excursions are to the fishing village of Gandria, up the Monte San Giorgio or the Monte Generoso or to the Lilliput world of Switzerland in Miniature at Melide.
Highlights
Parco Civico Ciani - Overlooking the shores of lake Ceresio, its 63.000 sq. metres constitute the citys green lung; its a quiet place where you can take nice walks and where it is impossible to remain unperturbed by the grandeur of century old trees. Monte Br (925 m) Lugano's closest mountain can be reached by funicular railway from Cassarate on the outskirts of Lugano. Wonderful panorama of the town, lake and mountains, stretching right over the border into Italy. Monte San Salvatore (912 m) from the top of the "sugarloaf" (reached by funicular railway from Lugano-Paradiso) you can walk down the panoramic footpath to Carona and then on to Morcote. San Lorenzo Cathedral set above the Old Town, it is worth a visit with its facade in the Lombardy Renaissance style, and countless frescoes and valuable Baroque artefacts inside. Church of Santa Maria degli Angioli - in this former monastery church, built about 1500, are fine frescoes by the masters of the Renaissance. Hesse Museum in Montagnola small, intimate museum for the writer and adopted son of Ticino, Hermann Hesse, who lived and wrote in southern Switzerland for at least half a century.

As the only lakefront hotel in the centre of Lugano, the Hotel International au Lac occupies a special place in the citys heart. Opened in 1906, it is now a protected building and offers travellers the chance to spend the night in a wonderfully historic setting that is nonetheless unpretentious and good value. Guests can also make use of the swimming pool, garden, sun terrace as well as internet access. Quite an achievement for the Hotel International au Lac, which as a result received a special award from UNESCO. Locals come to the Ristorante Grand Caf Al Porto in the heart of the Old Town for their morning coffee, to read the paper, to meet friends or business partners, for a working lunch, for dinners among friends and family, even for banquets with anything from 10 to 80 guests. The historic setting is supremely atmospheric, the Italian-inspired cuisine a treat even for sophisticated palates, and the creative delights of renowned Al Porto confectionery an irresistible temptation. The Grand Caf Al Porto, in other words, has long been part of Luganos cultural heritage. The monumental fresco in the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli in the piazza at the end of Luganos Via Nassa is packed with so much detail that no matter how long you gaze at it, you keep discovering new story lines. Painted by Bernardino Luini in 1529, it depicts the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ, and is regarded as the most important Renaissance wall painting in Switzerland. Apropos culture you can find plenty more of this at the Museo dArte della Citt di Lugano, also known simply as the Museo dArte. This is housed in the magnificent 18th-century Villa Malpensata, which has taken on the task of continually expanding the citys collection of modern art. Exhibitions focus on art and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries which guarantees an inspiring finale for any visit to Lugano. Ride the historic red funicular that climbs the mountain on Luganos doorstep, the Monte Br, and at the top a spectacular panorama opens up. The lake, mountains, the striking peak of Monte San Salvatore you feel as if with a leap in the air you could see the other side of the Alps. Stroll through the enchanting old Ticino village on the mountain summit, soaking up the sunshine at this gloriously scenic spot.

With its numerous bars and cafs, once the setting for explosive political debates, the piazza is an ideal place for an aperitif or a coffee allitaliana. People from far and wide take a seat on one of the caf terraces to observe the colourful comings and goings of the city centre.

Rushing from one meeting to the next is not the Ticino way of going about life. In Lugano, the parks are too pretty, the alleys of the Old Town too enticing and the prospect of heading out onto the lake, to soak up the sun and the scenery, too tempting. Whether you opt for a cruise on a scheduled boat or a trip on a pedalo, spend your afternoons in the manner favoured by locals, devoted to dolce far niente, the sweet art of doing nothing. The magnificent Villa Ciani, just a short walk from the Old Town, enjoys an enchanting position overlooking the lake. The villa itself regularly stages fascinating historical, artistic and anthropological exhibitions; the splendid grounds boast statues, decorative fountains, lush flowerbeds and benches offering breathtakingly beautiful views across the lake. Families, too, love this pretty park, with its sweeping lawns and childrens area full of fun attractions. Housed in a building by the renowned architect Mario Botta, and equally stylish, is the Ristorante Villa Saroli named after another wonderfully elegant structure, the Renaissance-style Villa Saroli, dating from the early 19th century, that stands opposite. The GaultMillau-rated restaurant is headed by the chef Alessandro Fumagalli, who conjures up gastronomic creations of the highest quality.

Architecture
The Madonna degli Angioli church
The whole fresco resembles a magnificent gobelin. Take some time to study it closely. On the left wall of the nave is a large fresco depicting the Last Supper and on the first of the four side altars is also a fresco, depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. Both are attributed to Luini and reflect the influence of Leonardo da Vinci. The church is located on Piazza Bernardino Luini, at the end of Via Nassa, the city's elegant shopping boulevard.
