W
hen she turned 40, Lovie Twine
took up running to lose weight
and get in better shape. Two years
and 75 pounds lost later, the wise decision
to hit the ground running has changed the
Austin residents life.
The inspiring transformation truly has
been comprehensive, ranging well beyond
simply shedding pounds on the scale.
Im healthier now at 42 than when I
was 22, Twine said. Im healthier not only
physically but mentally and emotionally
as well. Running is a great stress reliever.
It provides an outlet to escape, even if
momentarily, the pressures of everyday
life. It clears my head and brings me joy.
Twine is set to run in the 2nd annual
West Side Heart & Sole Family 5k run
and 2-mile walk at LaFollette Park this
Saturday. The event starts at 7:30 a.m.
The race is sponsored by Circle Family
Healthcare Network, Austin Weekly News
State Rep. LaShawn Ford and Austin
Coming Together.
Austin is my backyard. Its where I
grew up and where I live now, Twine said.
I consider it truly an honor to be a part of
this race in my own neighborhood. I think
Austin has been a little slow getting on the
bandwagon of black women running, but
Im telling everybody I know that the run is
right here for us.
Personally registering over 40 people
from her network of running partners and
friends, Twine is certainly doing her part to
promote the event.
I hope this article motivates someone
to join the race, she said, or maybe
someone will look out the window, see
us running and think, I want to join this
group.
Twines love of life on the track took root
a few years ago.
While initially running with the Oak
Park Runners Club, one of the clubs
members told Twine about some black
women primarily from the West Side who
run, inuenced by a national organization
called Black Girls RUN! BGRs mission is
to encourage African-American women to
make tness and healthy living a priority.
The Oak Park Runners Club was very
welcoming but their level of running was
way out of my league, Twine said. Ive
never met anybody from Black Girls RUN!,
but we use their name as a basis to attract
runners.
At rst, Twine ran with primarily just one
other black woman, Margaux Mays, at Oak
Park and River Forest High Schools track
before moving their workouts to Concordia
University in River Forest. The group at
Concordia has swelled to 20 runners who
meet typically three or four times a week.
Concordia is a regulation-sized track
thats well lit and safe, said Mays. We
have gotten more women to participate
since running there.
Mays started running in 2008,
organizing runs for area black women after
reading the Black Girls RUN! blog.

turned 40, she started a running group for mostly African American women from the
West Side. The group now has more than 200 members.

My message for black women thinking
about running is dont be intimidated by
it, she said. I was living in Oak Park at
the time I started running and felt silly like
I didnt look like the typical runner in town.
It helped me with my mood. Running
has a snowball effect and you just want to
go farther and farther. You can also run
alone or with a group which is nice.
Twine and Mays rmly believe running
can help any black woman keep or get
her life on the right track via its assorted
benets.
I just think its a good thing to get
black women moving, Twine said. Black
women dont run. Before I started running,
I thought it was kind of silly and pointless.
Mays, 33, used running partly to
cope with the passing of her mother.
Over the past ve years, the sport has
also introduced her to an entire circle of
new friends not to mention a healthier
physique.
Ive lost quite a bit of weight but it
really hasnt been too hard for me, said
Mays, a Broadview resident who previously
lived in Austin and Oak Park. I just go on
a leisurely jog every other morning with my
dog.
As the conditioning and camaraderie
has grown among Twine, Mays and their
fellow workout partners, burning laps as
well as calories has become easier and
plenty of fun.
None of the women Ive run with had
any previous running experience, said
Twine, who is an accountant. Everybody
within our group though is a mother and a
wife who works and is just dealing with the
stress of life. We were looking for an outlet;
we found it together.
Theres an incredible bond we have
built with each other. The women in
our group started out as strangers and
while training became close friends. You
become a better person by supporting
others.
Recently, Twine recorded her personal
best 5K time of 27 minutes and 34
seconds. The mother of four is so
passionate about the sport she has to, at
times, scale back her workout regimen.
I have a lateral meniscus tear and so
I have stopped training at times this year,
she said, but I just started running again
recently. If its Gods will, Ill be out there
running at the [West Side Heart & Sole
Family] race. Its possibly my last run for
this year.
Twine will meet with her Circle Family
Healthcare Network physician Dr. Robert
Stannard on August 14 to schedule
surgery on her aforementioned injury. The
two have developed a bond atypical of
most doctor-patient interactions.
He crossed all boundaries of the
regular doctor and patient relationship,
she said. He treats the medical side of
things, but hes also genuinely concerned
with my mental and emotional health. Hes
just a class act and also a runner so he
understands my passion for it.
Twine has had opportunities to use
other medical facilities with the latest
technological advances; however, she
proudly points out, why go anywhere else
when I have a state of the art doctor.
That loyalty is apparent with her fellow
African-American female runners as well.
Were a community, she said. We
come together to exercise, have fun and
share in our struggles, too, all on the
track. When I rst started running, my sole
objective was to change my physical form.
Running changed my body, but it also
changed my mind and my heart.

West Side Heart & Sole s 5K Family Run & Walk
C
ircle Family HealthCare Network
wants West Side residents to lace
up their running and walking shoes
Saturday, Aug. 17.
Thats when the Austin-based health
center will host the 2nd annual West Side
Heart & Sole Family 5k run and 2 mile walk
at LaFollette Park, 1333 N. Laramie. The
event co-sponsors are the Austin Weekly
News, State. Rep. LaShawn Ford and
Austin Coming Together.
The event starts with a 7:30 a.m.
stretch followed by the run/walk at 8 a.m.
Ald. Emma Mitts will ring the starting bell.
Medals will be awarded for the top nishers
for the run.
Registration is $10 for the walk, $25 for
run, seniors and kids under 18 are $5 for
walk and $10 for the run. And thanks to
a $100 donation from both State Senator
Don Harmon and Circuit Court Judge Anita
Rivkin-Carothers, a limited number of free
registrations are available for those wanting
to participate, but who cant afford it.
The event is part of Circles efforts to get
West Siders t, active and healthy.
Our goal is the same as it was last year,
and that is to encourage people to exercise
whatever their preference be it walking
or running, said Dr. Andre Hines, Circles
CEO, who has run several half marathons.
Buzz from last years event generated
a lot of interest and Hines expects to
double the participants from last years
inaugural event that drew over 100. This
years run/walk will emphasize more family
involvement and organized teams.
Circle has partnered with Austin
Coming Together (ACT), a membership
organization, to do outreach and recruit
community groups, block clubs and
churches to organize teams for the run/
walk. ACT is among 11 organizations,
including Bethel New Life, Living Word
Prison Ministry, Hartgrove Hospital and
NET-Telligence Group, helping to sponsor
the event.
Hines said it was a challenge to get more
sponsors because of the economy, but she
is pleased with the jump in numbers of
walk/run participants. But she cautioned
that increasing numbers dont necessarily
signal more West Side residents are
becoming health conscious. But it is a step
in the right direction, she noted.
As West Siders see these type of events
happen in their community thats the kind
of things that is going to make a difference
for us, Hines said.
Saturdays event is an activity the entire
family can participate in without leaving
their community or having the cost of doing
something similar downtown on the lake front.
If you want exercise, theres a place
for you or if you want some fun, there is
a place for you, Hines said of the event
which will include a nutritionist to talk about
healthy lifestyles.
Getting healthy requires more than
just going to a physician, Hines said. Its a
combination of eating right, exercising and
regular check-ups, she added.
And certied raw food chef Dina
Miller couldnt agree more. Miller, owner
of Glorious 1 Enterprise, will be on hand
offering exercise tips and raw food recipes.
Exercise and healthy eating basically
go hand in hand if you want good health,
Miller said, adding that exercising doesnt
require an expensive gym membership or
equipment.
Getting started is as simple as walking,
taking the stairs instead of the escalator
or elevator or parking away from the malls
entrance.
You can incorporate little simple things
in your life and those little things will add
up, Miller said, adding that the goal is to
get 10,000 steps a day.
And if you cant get 10,000, start where
you are. Miller said. If you can only walk
a thousand steps a day or a hundred steps
a day start where you are then increase as
you go along.
Walking, she said, is great form of
exercise for cardiovascular health and
increased mobility in seniors.

O
besity in America has reached
epidemic proportion, but a recent
report by the Centers for Disease
Control reveals that the tide is turning on
childhood obesity.
The CDC reported last week that obesity
rates for low-income children under age
four has dropped slightly in 19 states and
remained unchanged in 21 others including
Illinois. Still one in eight (12 percent)
preschoolers is obese while one in ve (19
percent) Black children and one in six (16
percent) Hispanic children between two and
ve years old are obese.
Dr. Penny White, a pediatrician at Circle
Family HealthCare Network, doesnt need
a report to know childhood obesity is
problematic. She sees it among the centers
youngest patients.
White said the medical center has seen
a signicant percentage of kids who are
either overweight or obese. She has also
seen an equal number of youth who have
pre-diabetic systems such as acanthosis or
the darkening of the skin usually around the
neck. That condition indicates high insulin
levels.
Circle Family doctors counsel and work
with parents to make subtle changes in their
households. Parents, White said, should
reduce their childrens caloric intake by 100
and 150 calories a day and dilute juice with
water to cut down the sugar intake. But she
cautioned not to put children on diets similar
to adults, because children are still growing.
There are a lot of things
that you can do, White said.
We nd that when people eat
as a family that everybody gets
better nutrition and their diets
are healthy.
She also reminded parents
to be aware of childrens screen
time, especially if they are
snacking. She advises parents
to make children march in place if watching
TV or have them dance to music instead.
A lot of times people are afraid to let
their kids out because the streets arent
safe so the kids are stuck in the house
[watching] TV all day and of course they are
going to gain weight, White said The fact
that we are not able to get them out in a safe
environment where they can climb and play
is part of the issue.
But older teens who are borderline
diabetic usually take it upon themselves to
change their lifestyle, White noted.
Most of them have relatives that
have diabetes, and they know that is not
something they want to deal with, she said.
Ive seen kids, especially the older kids turn
eating habits and exercise around.
An often overlooked issue
with childhood obesity is
childrens mental wellbeing.
Overweight children are often
teased, shyer and not chosen
for activities, which could lead
to a sense of isolation.
We cant overlook that,
White said. I think they have a
little more social issues [and] I
think those are signicant.
Another key to ghting childhood obesity
is diet. Nutritionist Dina Miller, owner of
Glorious 1 Enterprise, said people should
incorporate more whole foods in their diet
and less processed foods. Whole foods,
she explained are apples, bananas, kale,
cabbage, spinach or anything that you can
pronounce.
If you look at the ingredient list on
a processed food box and you cant
pronounce it, more than likely it is not even
food, Miller said.
Miller will give a presentation on living a
healthy lifestyle during Circle Familys 2nd
annual West Side Heart & Sole Family 5k
run and 2 mile walk, Saturday, Aug. 17 at
LaFollette Park, 1333 N. Laramie. The event
is co-sponsored by Austin Weekly News and
State Rep. La Shawn Ford.
Miller contends the rise in obesity and
illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension
and arteriosclerosis associated with it, stems
from a process food explosion.
Fifty years ago is when we had a
processed food explosion. We are beginning
to see the fallout from it. Now obesity is a
disease, Miller said. Prior to that, most
people cooked food from scratch.
Both Miller and White contend obesitys
affects can be reversed through diet and
exercise. Miller said it starts with having a
balanced diet of fruit, veggies and whole
grains along with portion control.
Its all about balance, she said. Its
not to say you can never stray off and eat
processed food as long as it is not your main
staple in your diet.

W
hen Andrew Born persuaded two
of his coworkers to join him in
a 5k race last year, little did he
know a tradition would be born.
I just purchased the tickets and said,
Hey guys lets do this, said Born, director
of community planning with Austin Coming
Together. I did it on a whim.
Born and colleagues Darnell Shields
and Amara Enyia laced up their running
shoes to participate in the inaugural West
Side Heart & Sole Family 5k run and
2 mile walk as a way to do something
fun outside of the ofce. The trio will be
back at this years race this Saturday at
LaFollette Park, 1333 N. Laramie. This
year Austin Coming Together joined the
sponsors and planning committee, along
with Circle Family Healthcare Network,
Austin Weekly News and State Rep.
LaShawn Ford.
Its kind of like a new tradition, Born
said. This is just an opportunity for us to
do something outside of work but still in the
community and to do something positive.
I am an athlete, added Enyia, Any
opportunity to engage in athletic activity I
am always down for.
However their colleague Shields took
some convincing.
It was easy to get Amara to do it, but
Darnell was a little hesitant because he
doesnt really run, Born said. Since
Amara and I were doing it, he
joined in as well. So I guess
it was like peer pressure.
The pressure is on
this time around. The
trio hopes to best their
times in this years race.
Born wants to complete
the 3.1 mile race in 24
minutes.
Its probably a lot slower
than I would like to admit, he
said. The people who are really
good can do it like in 15 minutes.
Born noted the advantage is in Enyias
favor. She came in third last year and
has done a couple of triathlons in the
past. That made for interesting, but
friendly competition and no doubt will be
repeated this year.
I was trying to keep up with her the
whole time unsuccessfully, Born joked.
Even though Enyia left as ACTs
executive director in December, shes still
committed to racing with her teammates.
The trio bonded around their work to
improve the Austin community. Now
she works with Austin Chamber
of Commerce through
her consulting rm Ace
Municipal Partners.
She plans to give her
teammates a run for
their money though.
Thats if a schedule
conict wont keep away
her from the race.
I did pretty well last
year so I want to see if I can
get a better time than I had,
Enyia said. So theres a little of that
competitive edge in there too.
Enyia supports the endeavor because
more events like this are needed in the
community. Austin, she said is served by
a lot of community organizations, and this
event is a great way to see people outside
of their daily 9-5 grind.
ACT is partnering with Circle Family
to recruit organized teams. ACT has
been reaching out to its member
organizations to form organized teams
for the event. Born said its a worthwhile
cause to support while enjoying friendly
competitions with other community
organizations.
Enyia contends organizations benet
from participating in community
events like this. She said its easier for
organizations to form collaborations.
It is important to be visible so people
can put a face to a name and begin
to get a deeper level of understanding
about whos behind the titles of these
organizations, she said.
