1. Product Description

Medical equipment is designed to aid in the diagnosis, monitoring or treatment of medical conditions. There are several basic types of medical equipment: Diagnostic equipment includes medical imaging machines used to aid in diagnosis, examples of which are ultrasound and MRI machines, PET and CT scanners, and X-ray machines; Therapeutic equipment is another type of medical equipment and includes infusion pumps, medical lasers and LASIK surgical machines; Life support equipment is used to maintain a patient's bodily function. This includes medical ventilators, anaesthetic machines, heart-lung machines, ECMO and dialysis machines; Medical monitors allow medical staff to measure a patient's medical state. Monitors may measure patient vital signs and other parameters, including ECG, EEG, and blood pressure and dissolved gases in the blood; Medical laboratory equipment automates or helps analyze blood, urine and genes; and diagnostic medical equipment may also be used in the home for certain purposes, e.g. for the control of diabetes mellitus.

Overview

According to Business Monitor International (2012), the global medical device sales will increase from USD347bn in 2011 to USD561bn in 2021, equating to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9%. The fastest increase in sales through to 2021 will be experienced in the Middle East and Africa, growing at 163%, Latin America at151% and Asia at113%. According to Business Monitor International (2012), Angolas pharmaceutical market was valued at USD286m in 2011. Healthcare expenditure in Angola is forecast to increase from USD5.14bn in 2011 to USD11.86bn in 2016. Angolas medical devices sector was valued at: USD203m in 2011 and is expected to increase to USD242m in 2012. The figure below shows Angolas sales of medical equipment for the period 2011 to 2020. Angolas Global Trade in Medical Equipment

The figure below shows Angolas trade of medical equipment related goods for the period 2002 to 2011. Angolas exports of medical equipment goods were valued at ZAR0.7m in 2011 compared to ZAR10.4m in 2010, decreasing by 93.3%. Imports were valued at ZAR829m in 2011 compared to ZAR480m in 2010, increasing by 72.7%. Angolas medical equipment sector experienced a negative trade balance between 2002 and 2011. Other top export products were composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents (ZAR0.1m); medical, surgical or laboratory sterilizers (ZAR0.1m) and breathing appliances and gas masks (ZAR0.03m). The leading medical equipment import product into Angola was instruments and appliances used in medical or veterinary sciences, valued at ZAR185m. Composite diagnostic or laboratory reagents and -rays apparatus, medical/surgical/veterinary use were ranked second and third valued at ZAR114m and ZAR45m. Other top import products were medical, surgical, dental or veterinary furniture and parts (ZAR42m); syringes, with or without needles (ZAR41m) and needles, catheters, cannulae and the like (ZAR40.6m).

As depicted in the graph below, South Africa has maintained a positive trade balance with Angola, in terms of trade in medical equipment related goods for the period 2002 to 2011. In 2011, South Africa exported medical equipment related goods valued at ZAR49m in 2011 compared to ZAR33m in 2010, representing an increase of 48%.
