TraffCalc

Instructions: This program requires Microsoft Excel 2000 or newer. You also need to set your security level to Medium, for the Macros to function. Click the VoIP-Calc button to begin Click on the items below to get more information on how the calculator operates.

Erlang-B Details Extended Erlang-B Details Engset Details

Erlang-B: Erlang-B is a model, with the following assumptions: - Infinite sources - e.g. more than 100, or where the caller to trunk ratio is greater than 8-1. - Poisson arrivals - i.e. random traffic - Call holding times - can be either constant, or exponentially distributed - Blocked calls are cleared - i.e. never try again This model is suitable whenever you know that blocked calls will never retry, such as a first attempt trunk group. When all trunks are busy, traffic will overflow to an alternate route. When you select the Traffcalc button on the master page, you will see this dialog box. you can choose the appropriate option, depending on what you know, and what you want to learn. You need to know 2 of the 3 variables, then select the appropriate option: For Blocking Probability:
- choose the first button, - then enter the busy hour Erlangs, and no. of trunks - press the calc button to learn the probability of blocking in %

For No. of Trunks:

- choose the second button, - then enter the busy hour Erlangs, and Prob. of blocking - press the calc button to learn the no. of trunks

For Trunk Capacity:

- choose the third button, - then enter the no. of trunks, and Prob. of blocking - press the calc button to learn the possible carried traffic.

We have provided the answers you should get for a given input. Note: if you are using a foreign language version of Excel, that uses commas rather than periods for the decimal point, you will get erroneous results. You will need to change your settings to an English version.

Extended Erlang-B (EEB): : EEB is a model, with the following assumptions: - Infinite sources - e.g. more than 100, or where the caller to trunk ratio is greater than 8-1. - Poisson arrivals - i.e. random traffic - Call holding times - can be either constant, or exponentially distributed - Blocked calls will retry - i.e. some percentage of callers will try again. This model is suitable whenever you know that blocked calls will retry, typical of calls to a PBX or ACD. The problem is that there is no magic formula for determining the recall factor. If you are not sure, use 50%. If you are confident that virtually everyone will retry, then choose 99%. When you select the Traffcalc button on the master page, you will see this dialog box. you can choose the appropriate option, depending on what you know, and what you want to learn. It is essentially the same as Erlang-B, with the addition of the recall factor

Engset: Engset is a model, with the following assumptions: - Finite sources - e.g. less than 100, or where the caller to trunk ratio is less than 8-1. - Poisson arrivals - i.e. random traffic - Call holding times - can be either constant, or exponentially distributed - Blocked calls are cleared - i.e. callers receiving a busy signal go elsewhere. This model is suitable whenever you know the number of callers. An example would be a purchasing department constantly calling out, ordering products. If there were 4 people in this group, generating 3 erlangs of traffic in the busy hour, and 1% Prob. of blocking, an infinite source formula such as Erlang-B would say you need 8 trunks for 3 erlangs. But if only 4 people are generating the traffic, you wouldn't need more than 4 lines for 0% blocking. When you select the Traffcalc button on the master page, select the Engset tab, & you will see this dialog box. you can choose the appropriate option, depending on what you know, and what you want to learn. It is essentially the same as Erlang-B, with the addition of the number of sources.
