Materials 1. Yarn: Super Bulky, size 6 yarn. I used Wool Ease Thick and Quick from Lion Brand. The UK/Australian equivalent is 14 ply. 2. Hook: Hook P (10mm) and a hook H (5mm) to weave in the tails. 3. Sewing Needle 4. Three large wooden buttons. I used 1 inch ones. Size Finished measurements: 23 inches in circumference and 7 inches wide Gauge 6 sc st = 4 inches 8 sc rows = 4 inches Yardage I used about 100 yards of yarn. I could work it up in just one skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick with a few yards left. Stitch Abbreviations Pattern is in standard American terms. sc- single crochet sl st- slip stitch ch- chain Note: All pictures have been numbered sequentially and grouped together on the next 2 pages. 6.) Step 1: Bring the 4th Strip over the 3rd and the second strip over the first.

7.) Step 2: Cross the 2 strips in the middle now by bringing the one on the left over the one on the right.

Pattern
Note: Turning chain does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern. Please refer to the pictures when mentioned in the written pattern. You first make four long strips connected to each other and then braid them.

Chain 41 for your foundation chain.


Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. Turn.------------- 40 sc Row 2 &3 : Ch 1, 1 sc in same st as chain 1, 1 sc in each st across till end. Turn.------------40 sc You will have finished the first strip for braiding now. Chain 41 to start the next strip connected to the first as shown in pic 1. Repeat Row 1, 2 & 3 to make your second strip. Repeat the steps 2 more times till you have 4 long strips connected to each other as shown in pic 2. Do not fasten off. Proceed to make button hole band below. Note: Each strip measured 25 inches long before adding the bands. Button Hole Band In the first row, you will work sc stitches along the sides of the strips to join them better as shown by arrow in pic 2 . Row 1: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), you will work 3 sc across the side of each strip as shown in pic 2 to get a row with 12 sc. Turn.---------------12 sc Row 2: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), 1 sc in same st as ch 1, ch 1 for button hole, skip one st, 1 sc in next 3 st, ch 1 for second button hole, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next 4 st, ch 1 for third button hole, 1 sc in last st. Turn.--------------9 sc and 3 chains. Note: Work in to the chain space means work in to the gap left by chaining and skipping a stitch in the previous row. Row 3: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), 1 sc in same st as ch 1, 1 sc in to the next ch space for button hole, 1 sc in next 4 st, 1 sc in to the next ch space, 1 sc in next 3 st, 1 sc in to the next ch space for button hole, 1 sc in last st. Fasten off.--------------12 st You can see the finished button hole band in pic 3 but the button holes are not visible in the picture.

Page 5- Alicia Cowl Braiding the Cowl Arrange the 4 strips parallel to each other as shown in pic 6. 1. Put the 4th one left over the 3rd one and put the 2nd one left over the 1st one as shown in pic 6. 2. Cross the middle two by bringing the one on the left over the one on the right as shown in pic 7. Repeat the above two steps till you braid the whole length of the strips. Arrange the shorter sides of the strips as shown in pic 4. proceed to work the button band as below. Button Band Row 1: Sl st to the corner of the first strip on right and work 3 sc across the first strip as shown in pic 4, continue to work 3 sc across the 2 nd, 3rd and 4th strip. At the end of this round you would have joined all the 4 strips together. Turn. ----------12 sc Row 2: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), 1 sc in each st across. Turn.------12 sc Row 3: Ch 1 ( does not count as a st), 1 sc in each st across. Fasten off.------12 sc Finishing 1. Weave in the yarn tails at the back of your cowl using a smaller hook.
