BOILER BLOW-OFF TANKS

Adamson Boiler Blowoff tanks are utilized to reduce temperature and pressure of the blowdown discharged from a boiler. With few exceptions it is unlawful, and in all cases it is undesirable to discharge the boiler blowdown directly to a sanitary sewer. It is recommended that blowdown temperature and pressure be reduced to 150 F maximum and 5 psig maximum respectively prior to final release. In many cases additional cooling of the tank discharge is required. This can be accomplished by any standard heat exchanger located between tank discharge and sewer. Although many cities and states do not have an unfired pressure vessel law, very often boiler blowoff tank specifications are included with the boiler code. With few exceptions, A.S.M.E. construction and stamping is required for the boiler blowoff tank. The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, 1155 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio, Zip Code 43201 has prepared a booklet "Boiler Blowoff Equipment" pertaining to proper design of boiler blowoff equipment and piping which is considered an excellent source of information on this subject. This booklet can be obtained at small expense by request to the National Board. EXAMPLES:
(1) Assume the boiler water volume discharged during blowdown equals 28 cubic feet, the total tank volume should equal 2 x 28 or 56 cubic feet. From page 29 select 42 x T-O", 59.5 cu. ft.) or 48" x 5'6", 57.7 cu. ft.). Specify type V (Vertical) or type H (Horizontal). Specify inlet, outlet, and vent connection sizes. (2) If the exact method of calculation is used (see National Board "Boiler Blowoff Equipment") determine the volume of saturated water remaining after flashing. Multiply this volume by 2. The result equals the required tank volume (cu. ft.) and the corresponding tank size can be selected from page 29. A tangential inlet that imparts a swirling action to the incoming blowdown, an internal wear plate to increase tank life, and supports can be provided if required. (1) 12" x 16" manhole is required on 42" A.S.M.E. Tanks and larger. (2) Flanged connections are supplied for 4" connections and larger. Smaller connections are threaded unless otherwise specified.

OPERATION Blowdown is piped directly from the boiler to the upper part of the blowoff tank. The vented condition in the blowoff tank permits the blowdown to flash into steam and dissipate to the atmosphere. The remaining saturated water is mixed with cooling water in the lower half of the blowoff tank and passes from the tank through the trapped outlet.

SELECTION It is recommended that the blowoff tank have a volume equal to twice the volume of boiler water discharged during blowdown when the boiler water level is lowered 4" minimum. Exact methods of calculating the required tank volume for various conditions are fully outlined in the National Board publication referred to above. It is recommended that the head and shell thickness be not less than 3/8". For a single unit blowoff tank installation where boiler pressure does not exceed 400 psi, the area ratio between blowdown inlet, water outlet, and vent should be 1:1:5.
