The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
Beautiful sunshine greeted most games this weekend which was a nice turnaround from previous weeks. A variety of pitches greeted teams ranging from mud to slop with a dash of grass. Training last weekend showed that when we are unable to train on the pitches, there aint much space for the pigeons!!! However the kids that trained seemed to have fun in the mud. Stay tuned for notification re training. Assume it is on unless alerted. This week Played 10 Won 5 Lost 4 Draw 1 For 27 Against 23 This season Played 137 Won 74 (54%) Lost 49 Draw 13 For 497 Against 305

THE FOOTBALL RAMBLER

Is missing in action

COACHES BOX
Street Football Cygnet Style: Growing up in Scotland in the 1960s and lacking the entertainment of TV Cartoon Networks, Playstation 3s, X-Boxes, Nintendo DSs, Wiis and erm Playstation 2s, all we had to amuse ourselves with was kicking a ball around. We didnt need proper facilities because in those days vehicular transport hadnt been invented so we simply honed and developed our skills out on the streets that had been laid out for the advent of the first motorized vehicles which came into play some twenty years later. The introduction of Small Sided Football in Australia in the last five years is merely an attempt to replicate the skill developmental features of street football of the type we practiced back in 1960s Scotland. Of course we in Australia were late to the Small Sided Football party which was already in full swing in places like the Netherlands, France, Germany and Brazil (who tend to practice beach football) long before we thought of it here in Tassie, but thats another story. Of course we in Cygnet, where in winter daylight fades at about 2.15pm (not long after first light) the race has been on to find an alternative that circumvents our lack of sunlight and we needed to do it soon before the season and winter runs its course. We think that were onto something and its courtesy of none other than our U14 Co-Coach Dave Sayers who has pioneered a version entitled Small Sided Kitchen Football. Daves son Christian ruled himself out for the season when he broke a bone in his hand last week (not football related) and it was with a sense of urgency that Dave tackled the need for Christian to maintain his skills with the new season coming round again in the New Year. Kitchen Football involves a player, a couple of rolled up old socks a fridge (your opponent) and the kitchen table (for goals). On Friday Night Floodlight Football with time running out, reports suggest that Christian and the Fridge were engaged in a tense and nail-biting 3-3 draw. With just seconds to go Christian feigned right before cutting to his left and lining up his shot on goal for what would have been the winner. The fridge, wrong footed, unsportingly resorted to tripping Christian who fell to the ground for a penalty, following which the fridge even more unsportingly stomped on Christians outstretched foot meaning that Christian now has a cast on his leg to match the one on his arm. As well as Christian we were also missing long term absentee Jake Ainslie as well as Hannah Parish (flu) and Finley Gorringe (concussion). Nevertheless we still had eleven players and though some were suffering from a mixture of flu, knee knack, and, some simply coming out in sympathy with their sick and injured team-mates we faced a demoralized opponent who could only muster nine players. These are no-win situations as we beat them 10-1 last time and with the game having a surreal feel it was good to get this one out of the way. We made hard work of it but the win was eventually pretty much routine so well done team (result and scorers below). Just two games left and they will go ahead on the days and times specified should either venue be ruled unplayable the match will be switched to Dave Sayers Kitchen. See you on Thursday for training and Saturday for our penultimate match of the season. Cygnet Sea Dragons 6-1 Kingborough Lions (Scorers for Cygnet Isaac Beecroft 4, Brady Cook 1, Vincent Chancellor 1 (penalty)). (Eds note: congrats to Brady for putting away his 1st goal of the season after latching onto one of many crisp passes from Ryan who (while getting his chance up front for half the game did not muster his own first goal of the season), showed his quality technique with nutmegs and passes galore)

Yours, The Coaches Box

Edition 18 31 August 2013 8. Match Reports

Cygnet U/6
Tough game on a very muddy pitch, it was distracting for both players and coaches. After previously beating this team 8 nil we were probably a little over confidant at the start. Finishing the first half one goal down seemed to be the wake up we needed. The tactic of running the long way around to avoid the muddy middle was wearing us out and mostly ending over the side line. So we opted to rush the kick ins steel the ball and score some goals. William was on fire today with great runs at goals and defensive work, he kicked a powerful goal that bounced of two of their defenders before going in. Abby played a confidant game , standing her ground against the Margate strikers and always wining the ball. Charlie Gorringe was powerful in defence, closing down many attempts at goal & was just off target on a few attempts of his own. Archie was all over the pitch working hard to keep our team on top, he purposefully kicked a very impressive cross to Charlie Hooper (the likes of which we rarely see from an under six player), great job. Flynn seemed to enjoy the muddy conditions, almost sneaking a goal past the determined Margate defenders. Charlie Hooper had a great start to the day scoring the first goal in 4 seconds after the start , all up he had three solid goals and did some clever defensive work. Great Job Team. Alby

Wow what a cracker of a game. The two teams were so evenly matched that the first goal wasn't scored until just before half time. Calvin Gold played a great defence game and Cygnet played a great attacking game. To watch this game was a nail biting experience. This week the boys really came together to put the pressure on, well done.

The crowds flocked to our home ground as the U8 South Division 1 top of the table clash took place. The Kingborough Lions White kids where talking of getting one back after their previous 2 losses and draw and looked up for the occasion. The intense atmosphere could be cut with a knife, and this was proven within a few minutes with Zac Curtain and the great big red head (also a Zac) colliding in a brutal 50/50 battle for the ball. As the crowds continued to flock in with George Wilson handling gate receipts, it was a tense tug of war with both teams stuck in the mud at the half way line. Oranges arrived with the scores 0-0 and some tense discussions were had. Especially on which slice of orange to pick up!!! Big Ethan came out of goals in the 2nd half and showed he was missed up front providing the focal point of passing up the field or simply keeping the opposition honest and drawing defenders away. Finally the deadlock broke. With the first 5 or so minutes of the 2nd half seeing our boys begin to dominate (thanks to the 100 odd home crowd roaring support), The ball came out of the pigeon feast, for Big Ethan whose positional play was brilliant in this scenario to shoot home with

his left foot. The ball made it over the line and the crowd roared. From this point on blood could be tasted and the U8 Green dominated. Zac pulled a bullet out and unleashed it into goal and there were numerous other close affairs. Kate and Holly were their usual in midfield, making life very difficult for the Lions, Little Ethan made numerous head on tackles (and I mean head on) and Tristan fought bravely for anything he could get. Lauren was everywhere and also solid in goals in the 2nd half. On the final whistle it was the loudest rendition of the victory song heard this year. Interestingly enough, once the final whistle went the crowds seemed to disappear. Great effort from the kids. The unbeaten run continues but of particular note is the defence which has conceded only 3 goals from 14 games this season. Top stuff U8 Green. The Rambler Cygnet U8 Green 2 def Kingborough Lions White 0 (Big Ethan 1, Zac 1)

Cygnet U/8 White

In the first encounter of the season against this opposition, Michaela and I decided to stop the rotation policy of moving the players from position to position and to consolidate the kids into a team attackers, midfield and defence. The idea being that everyone developed a role based on their respective ability and to own that role for at least the 1st half of every match. In that match The Sea Dragons had 80% of the procession and 80% of the field position but most importantly the trap/ look up / pass the ball / and move quickly drill that we have been practicing at training, was being undertaken for the first time in the match. Unfortunately we lost that match 0-1 to a flukeish goal but primarily due to the Calvin coach/referee constantly stopping the play in both attack and defence, to position his players before recommencing the game. Fast forward six weeks and despite the Calvin coach demonstrating the same level of on field interference and coaching from behind the goal line which is against the rules*; our kids rudimentary skills from 6 weeks ago were now well developed. Three very pleasing aspects were: That the attacking quartet put pressure on the ball in Calvins half of the field. When ever there was a Cygnet player attacking the Calvin box there were ample Dragons in support to provide options. The skill level displayed there were many displays of well thought out passing between each other.

As a coach it was a joy to watch and everyone should be proud and take a bow. The dominance of the Dragons was demonstrated in the first stanza where the ball never entered the Sea Dragons half of the field and Toby as resident keeper never touched the ball! Next week will be a tough encounter top of the table, as we take on Southern Christian College. We have played them twice this season, for a win a piece but they shade us 5-4 on aggregate. Let the Dragon roar!

A beautiful morning with the sun shining for a change. The ground was firm and we were looking forward to a great match. We borrowed Oscar L who had already played with his own team as Ned and Riley were both sick. The first half of the match today was the best soccer I have ever seen this team play. They all contributed beautifully and worked together fantastically as a team. Elliot made heaps of clearing kicks out of the goals to keep St Therese at 1 goal in the first half with Romi scoring her first goal for the season with her mum there to watch, and a second for us by Codi late in the second half. Rory and Toby had some chances at goal but were defeated by a pretty nimble goalie. Ina and Saras worked together really well to form a solid defence with Oscar doing a brilliant job in whichever position he was put in. St Therese scored an early goal in the second half and then it was goal and goal about for a final score of 4:4. Oscar scored both goals in the second half, one of them by taking the ball all the way from the midline to the goal and finishing off with a great kick. Ina and Saras worked really well together in attack with Toby and Romi in defence. Rory saved some good strong kicks as goalie with Elliot, Oscar and Codi all having a good try at covering all the field. The second half wasn't quite as strong as the first but a terrific result for a game very well played. It has been a pleasure to work with this bunch of kids, they have developed into a really cohesive team and should be proud of their efforts over the season. With two weeks left, the game will change with Toby, Ned and Codi all missing the last two games as they will be overseas and interstate which will possibly give some of the other kids a better chance to show how good they really are. Good luck team and thanks to Pete and the other parents for stepping in for the finale. See you all at Cygnet for the 2014 season. Cygnet U9 White 4 drew St Thereses 4 (Oscar L 2, Romi 1 and Codi 1)

Playing against a team that had 2 ring-ins, the U10 White team took to the pitch with vigour and it didn't take long to get a 1-0 lead. Playing with 6 players and a goalie the kids kept the pressure on West Hobart who had to lower themselves to allowing the ring-ins to score to keep up. Out manned and out gunned, we went hard but were run over at the end.

An 9 o'clock early start today in Kingston which never bodes well for our team. We had a slow start and lost an early goal to a penalty (which we can have no complaints about) as we found our feet. Fortunately, Kai managed a trademark fast run to their goal and scored to bring it back to one each. Then disaster as the defence fumbled a corner and somehow we allowed the ball to bobble in for an own goal and gave the lead back to Kingsborough. Thankfully a fantastic strike from Sorin (most people on the sideline and the ref didn't realise it had flown in..!) gave us our just deserts as we headed into the break all level at two each. Half Time : Kingsborough Lions 2 - 2 Cygnet Sea Dragons A tough start to the second half and we weathered the storm as Kingsborough kept breaking and passing around our defence, but we held firm and slowly worked ourselves back into the match. A great corner from Sorin and a fantastic volley from Ewan, not only saw us take the lead in the game but also brought forth our first goal from a set piece move. (Hooray...)In truth, it was against the run of play so could we hang on..? It was not to be our day as the Lions took control and managed another two goals and before we knew what had happened we were trailing again. A very unlucky day for us and as coach it was a shame the goals from Sorin and Ewan didn't win the game for us as they really deserved a victorious match result. Definitely a better overall performance than when we last played Kingsborough, but what happened to our clean sheet..?!? Full Time : Kingsborough Lions 4 - 3 Cygnet Sea Dragons A great game today from both sides on a difficult pitch, it was slippy and stodgy and both teams did well to get the ball down and play. The defence were a little asleep today and really should have done better; perhaps it was the early start or the windy conditions..? Anyhow, we need to capitalise on our past performances if we are going to win more games and that means we really have to stop gifting goals to our opposition..!!! The penalty and own goal from the corner and our lack of decisive decision making at the back have really cost us today. It's not the end of the world and I'll save the post mortem for training on Friday...
