Welcome to the Junior Class at Taonui School.

Here is some
information for you as new parents at school, and a few tips
and ideas that may help your child/ren.

In the junior room our classroom programme is fairly

consistent Monday to Thursday and on Fridays we may do
something different. Our class timetable is as follows
(although is subject to change):

Roll
News/Mystery Bag/Oral Language
Reading
Poem
Big Book/Shared Reading
Morning Tea
Maths
Fitness
Writing
Lunch
Story
Handwriting
Topic/Art/P.E./Library etc

Your child will get homework. When they first start they will
get a word game – these games are to help your child learn the
high frequency words they just “need to know” by sight. These
games are meant to be fun for your child – they do not have to
be done every night, but the more times your child sees these
words the quicker he/she will learn them.

They will also bring home a book to read. Books that are sent
home to be read are suppose to be easy reading. It is for you
to celebrate your childs success. By no means is it new
learning. Your child may bring home the same book for a few
days at a time, or they may bring home a different book each
night.

As time goes by your child will start to bring home spelling

words and maybe even some basic facts (6 months – 1 year
down the track). This will be on an as needed basis.

Regular Reporting
We will report on your childs progress in the following ways:

Term 1 and 3 Parent Interviews

End of Year Full Written Report

You are most welcome to ask for a parent interview anytime –

to discuss your childs learning or to discuss any queries or
concerns you have. You are also most welcome to come into
the classroom anytime to look at your childs work on the walls
or in their books, and talk to your child about it – I encourage
parents to do this as the children love it when Mum or Dad
looks at what they have been doing.

Your childs learning and achievement is very important to me as

the Junior Teacher and to us as a whole school. I believe it is
important to meet the individual needs of each child so they
can learn to the best of their ability. Obviously if I ever have
any concerns about your childs learning or behaviour it will be
discussed with you as parents so we can work together and
work out what is best for your child.
Newsletters
Newsletters are sent home every second Wednesday – but all
information regarding our school and what is happening is
available on our wikispace which is continually updated.

Kainui Cluster Events

Your child will be involved in other activities with our cluster
schools. These activities include junior tabloids, folkdancing,
cross country, Kainui Concert (every 2nd year held at the
Regent Theatre) and other sports events. Our cluster schools
are Colyton, Hiwinui, Mt Biggs, Bunnythorpe, Awahou, Newbury
and Whakaronga. These events are very well run and the
children get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

Bible in Schools
Bible is Schools is every Wednesday in class from 9 – 9.30 a.m.
These lessons are based around values, e.g. sharing,
friendships, manners, helping, good choices etc. The children
love these sessions with Mrs Greed. They are very light
hearted and fun. If you do not wish your child to attend these
sessions you would have marked this on the enrolment form.

As the Junior Teacher I have very high expectations of the

children with both behaviour and learning. I want all children
in my class to be happy at school and enjoy coming to school to
be the best they can be. Here are ways in which you can help
your child:

• Have high expectations but be realistic. You know your

child/ren better than anybody. Celebrate their
successes and encourage them with their learning
journey.
• Your child will get tired!!! Do not stress if homework is
not done one night, they will be okay.
• Talk to your child/ren – have conversations with them,
provide them with information, feedback, ask questions,
support them. Join the library, read to your child/ren,
visit parks and museums, give them plenty of life
experiences.
• Keep your child/ren healthy – make sure they they get
plenty of sleep and eat well.
• Do not push or pressure your child beyond their
capability, of course we want all our children to do well,
but all children learn at different rates and stages..
• Most of all ENJOY your children – let them be “children”
- they grow so fast and it is not long before they are
adults!

REMEMBER:
If you ever have any questions, please come and ask – and come
and visit our classroom as much as possible – it is your childs
classroom too!! Don’t forget to check the wikispace – which
also links to our classroom blogs. Another great way to keep in
touch.
