2. SOUND, NOISE AND SILENCE Some interesting definitions Essentially, music is sound. SOUND is produced when an object vibrates and it is what can be perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing. It travels through physical mediums by sound waves and it is normally a pleasant feeling. NOISE is a disagreeable auditory experience but this is a subjective definition (for example, most of the percussion instruments produce noises when they are played). Anyway, the physical difference between sound and noise is the sort of waves: sound waves are regular and in a noise the wave is irregular. (Look at the pictures).

3. THE QUALITIES OF SOUND El sonido tiene cuatro cualidades: Altura (Pitch), duracin (duration), intensidad (intensity) y timbre (timbre). Cada cualidad distingue diferentes sonidos, segn la tabla siguiente: High PITCH Low DURATION Short Long

Si no acierta, se le dir: It is not right, y se preguntar a otra persona. 4. Sobre un sonido, se harn y respondern preguntas como las siguientes: Tell me the pitch of the sound Tell me the duration of the sound Tell me the intensity of the sound Is this sound low and loud? The sound is high/low. The sound is long/short. The sound is loud/soft.
Is this sound short and high? The sound is high but it is not short.
5. Se emitirn 2 sonidos diferentes y se responder a preguntas como las siguientes: Which sound is high? Se responder de la manera siguiente: The high sound is the sound number two.
