** How Can I Use This? ** Mr. Lewkowitz is conducting an experiment with bacteria. He takes a culture and Fred ordersd watches as the population doubles every hour. He started with 12 samples, and soon has 24, 48, 96, etc. How many bacteria will be in the dish after 12 hours?

12, 24, 48, 96, 192,

Do Now
Alison belongs to a CD club. Each month she receives 5 new CDs. Before joining the club, she owned 50 CDs. Alison plans on buying 2 new CDs each month in addition to the ones she receives from the club. How many CDs will Alison have after 6 months of belonging to the club? What are we solving for? What do I need to do in order to solve the question?

Steps for Identifying Sequences
1. Determine what the question is asking 2. Solve the math for at least the first TWO terms
a. Eliminate the problem of (+, x) or (, )

3. *Ignore the first or last terms and focus on workable numbers

a. Remember, if its a sequence it doesnt matter what terms you work with

Sequences in Word Problems

Read the problems and use your knowledge of numeric and geometric sequences to answer the questions.
Peter is currently 53 inches tall. If he grows at a rate of 5 inches per year, how tall will he be in 4 years? Esteban buys a plant that he measures as 5 centimeters high. Three days pass, and he measures it again and sees that it is now 20 centimeters high. About how many centimeters did it grow each day?

The price of a companys stock starts on Monday at $15.00. On Tuesday it falls to $14.50 and by Wednesday it is at $14.00. If this pattern continues, how much will the stock be worth at the end of Friday?

Marvin likes to buy pens. On Monday he bought 2, on Tuesday he bought four, and on Wednesday he bought eight. Assuming he continues to buy pens at this rate, how many pens will he buy on Friday?

Check for Understanding
Demonstrate what you have learned by solving the problems below. You may refer back to your notes. Solve for the three problems involving sequences. 1. -7, -1, 5, 11, 17, _____
Rule of sequence:

2. 8, 5, 2, -1, -4, _____

Rule of sequence:

3. Shane sold only 2 cars during his first month as a salesman at Ford. His second month he sold 4 and in his third month he sold 8. If this trend continues, how many cars can Shane expect to sell in his fifth month as a salesman?

Whats Wrong With This?

Look at the mistake below. What went wrong? Provide the correct answer. Problem 1
On his Galileo test, Eli looks at the sequence below and circles A as his answer. Why is that not the correct answer? What is the correct answer? 1. 2, 5, 14, 41, 122 a. b. c. d. Add 3 to the previous term Multiply the previous term by 3, then add 1 Multiply the previous term by 3, then subtract 1 Subtract 1 to the previous term, then multiply by 3
