Storm on the Lake

Beginner Series, Quarter 3, Number 36 Hello boys and girls! Uncle Steve has a story for you today from the Holy Bible about Jesus calming a storm. The Apostles Matthew, Mark and Luke each tell us the story in their gospels. Here is the story from all three as told in Matthew 8 verses 18 to 27, Mark 4 verses 35 to 41, and Luke 8 verses 22 to 25.
Now it came to pass on a certain day, 1 when the even was come,2 [and] Jesus saw great multitudes about him, 3 that He went into a ship with his disciples.4 He gave commandment5 and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake.6 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 7 And they launched forth.8 But as they sailed he fell asleep9 in the hinder part of the ship, ... on a pillow.10 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea,11 and there came down a [great12] storm of wind on the lake,13 and the waves beat into the ship,14 insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves:15 and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.16 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying,17 Master, master,18 carest thou not that we perish?19 Lord, save us: we perish.20 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea;21 and the raging of the water:22 and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? 23 Where is your faith?24 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! 25 And they feared exceedingly.26 And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! For he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. 27

Appeal
Have you ever been afraid like the disciples were? Jesus was not afraid. He asked his disciples, Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith? Jesus had faith in God. He knew God the Father was more powerful than any storm and could keep him safe. Whenever we do not feel safe, we can claim the promise found in Isaiah chapter 41 verses 10 and 13:
10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.... 13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. (Isa 41:10-13)

We can trust in God like Jesus did and then we will not be afraid like the disciples were. Will you choose to say like David did in Psalm 56 verses 3 and 4:
3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. 4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. (Ps 56:3-4)
