East Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. Solungs are a tribe among whom no student has, as yet, passed the High school a community whose entire life is spent in poverty and back - breaking labour, doing menialjobs for others. No wonder, Tegung's parents could not dream oftheir child leaving his environs, entering a residential school or ultimately becoming some one different in life till Kendra - teachers came and selected him as a hostelier in the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV). Now Kendra meets the entire personal expenses of Tegung - clothes, shoes, bedding, mosquito -net, notebooks, stationery and scores of other little things that he needs for his daily life and which the school cannot provide from the grants... Then there is Bageli Manyu, a Mishmi girl from the interior Hayuliang where the villager's only way oflivelihood is an occasional crop - opium (poppy) fields cover the hills for the rest of the year; where the people are physically and nutritionally starved most of the year -places which are five to six days of footmarch from the nearest town, in the best, dry winter - weather. Bageli's parents shudder at the thought of sending their gir Isto a distant school, as she comes with a pleading look and holding a bag of old books.... Akhu Wangpan is a bright teenager from Tirap district; He is of the Wanchoo tribe, one of the most backward communities addicted to the shifting (slash-and-burn)' Jhum' cultivation.

This leaves Akhu' s parents with barren, burnt hill- slopes over which they can hardly grow anything for more than two or three months. They would rather expectAkhu to lead them a helping hand on the land, rather than spend his long hours in schooL.. Tegung, Bageli and Akhu are students in the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas in Arunachal Pradesh. There are many more like them.. And still many more who have not been able to continue in the schools, due to their abject poverty. We wish we could extend to them a ray of hope -with YOUR ASSISTANCE, naturally. To enable them to have a man - making education, ennobled by the inspiring ideals of Swami Vivekananda. So that Tegung could get educated to free himself and his family from perpetual slavery and social subjugation. So that Bageli could have an education that would ensure women equal social status, economic independence and scope to develop expertise infields ranging from social work to Computer Engineering. Sothat Akhu would learn to lead his society from the evils of opium ofJhumming to the blessings of living in harmony with Nature. There are many more such examples who have been helped by the goodness of people like you. Here is sample of three deserving children on the waiting list.

To meet the complete needs ofa child from the primary to secondary level, the cost comes to about Rs.12,OOO/per annum.
